Make YouTube Music Playlists Private: What to Change

Card No. 06·50298 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

To make a YouTube Music playlist private, open the playlist’s settings and change its privacy to Private. This prevents other people from finding or viewing it through your channel or a shared link, though anyone with access to your Google account or a device where you are signed in may still see it.

Change a playlist’s privacy setting

You can change privacy in YouTube Music on the web or in its mobile app. The labels and layout can vary slightly as the app changes, but the setting is managed from the playlist itself.

  1. Open YouTube Music and sign in to the Google account that owns the playlist.
  2. Go to Library and open Playlists. Select the playlist you want to change.
  3. Open the playlist’s Edit option, usually shown as a pencil icon, or use the three-dot menu and choose the edit option.
  4. Find the privacy or visibility setting, choose Private, and save or confirm the change if prompted.

On a computer, you can also open YouTube Music in a browser and make the change from the playlist page. If you do not see an edit control, check that you are signed in to the account that created the playlist. You generally cannot change the owner’s settings for a playlist someone else made.

What private means on YouTube Music

A private playlist is not available for other people to browse on your channel or open as a public playlist. It is intended for your own use, including listening while signed in to the account that owns it. Making a playlist private is different from deleting it: the playlist remains in your library, and you can switch its privacy later.

Privacy is about who can access the playlist, not whether the music itself is hidden from the service. YouTube Music still needs to display the playlist to you, and activity or recommendations may be affected by your account and listening settings. Private status also does not conceal your account from someone who can use your signed-in phone, browser, or Google account.

Keep the three common visibility choices distinct:

  • Public: Other people may find and view the playlist, including through your channel or search.
  • Unlisted: It is not generally listed for public discovery, but someone who has its link may be able to open it. A link is not a privacy lock.
  • Private: Other people cannot access it just by finding or receiving a playlist link; access is restricted to the owner’s account.

Availability and wording can differ by playlist type or product changes. If a playlist does not offer the same choices, use the controls shown on that playlist and check whether you are editing a playlist you own.

Check whether the change worked

After saving, return to the playlist’s edit screen and confirm that the setting reads Private. If you want an additional check, open the playlist’s share or details view and look for its visibility label. Do not rely only on whether the playlist appears in your own library: you can still see your private playlists while signed in.

A test in a browser where you are not signed in can help distinguish a public page from one restricted to your account, but it is not a substitute for checking the setting. Avoid sharing a link while testing, and remember that a playlist can remain visible to you because your account is authenticated.

Common problems and useful distinctions

  • The privacy option is missing: Confirm that the playlist belongs to the signed-in account. If it is a playlist created by another person, you may be able to save it to your library but not change its owner’s privacy.
  • The setting seems not to save: Reopen the edit screen and check the current value. If needed, refresh the app or browser and try again while connected to the internet.
  • You changed the wrong playlist: Check the playlist title and account profile before editing, especially if you use more than one Google account.
  • You shared a link earlier: Changing an unlisted playlist to private should restrict access, but do not assume an old link remains usable or that changing a setting removes copies of information someone already saw.
  • You want to hide listening activity: Playlist privacy does not automatically control every account activity or recommendation setting. Review YouTube and Google account privacy controls separately if that is your goal.

A common misconception is that “unlisted” and “private” mean the same thing. They do not: unlisted is mainly harder to discover, while private is meant to restrict access to the owner. If you would not want a person with the link to view a playlist, choose private rather than unlisted.

Privacy beyond the playlist

Changing a playlist to private does not sign you out of shared devices, protect an unlocked screen, or prevent someone with your account credentials from accessing your library. If you share a device, use its own profile or sign out when finished. Secure your Google account and device with the available lock and sign-in controls; playlist visibility is only one part of account privacy.

Also consider what is included in the playlist. A private setting limits access to the playlist page, but it cannot make a song or recording private if another person can already find it elsewhere. If you previously posted screenshots, copied track lists, or shared links while the playlist was accessible, changing the playlist setting cannot retrieve those copies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make a YouTube Music playlist private after creating it?
Yes. Open a playlist you own, edit its visibility, select Private, and save. You do not need to create a new playlist.

Can people see a private playlist if I send them the link?
Private playlists are intended to be restricted to the owner’s account, so a link alone should not grant another person access. Do not use an unlisted playlist when you need that restriction.

Can I make someone else’s playlist private?
No. You can change privacy only for a playlist you own. Saving another person’s playlist to your library does not make you its owner.

Will making a playlist private delete it?
No. It remains in your library and can be changed back to another available visibility setting later.

Does private hide my playlist from people using my phone?
No. Anyone who can use your unlocked device or signed-in account may be able to see your library. Use device and account protections as well.

What is the difference between private and unlisted?
An unlisted playlist is not generally listed for discovery, but people with its link may be able to access it. A private playlist is restricted to its owner’s account.
