Marvel Rivals Surrender and Exit: What Happens

Card No. 06·17111 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

When you surrender in Marvel Rivals, the match ends immediately and your team is credited with a loss; exiting the game after that simply returns you to the main menu with no additional penalty beyond the loss. If you exit before the surrender vote passes or during a match without surrendering, you face a temporary matchmaking ban and a loss of ranked points in competitive play.

How Surrender Works in Marvel Rivals

Surrender is a team vote that can only be initiated after a certain point in the match. In quick play, you can call a vote at any time after the first minute; in competitive, the vote becomes available after the first round or after a set amount of time has passed. To start a vote, open the pause menu and select the surrender option. Your teammates each get a prompt to accept or decline. The vote passes only if a majority agrees—typically four out of six players in a standard 6v6 match. If the vote fails, the match continues as normal, and you cannot call another surrender vote for a short cooldown period.

What Happens Immediately After Surrender

Once the surrender vote passes, the match ends within a few seconds. You see a defeat screen, and you are returned to the main lobby. There is no additional penalty for surrendering itself—the match counts as a loss for your team, and that is the end of it. You do not lose extra rank points beyond what a normal loss would cost, and there is no temporary ban for surrendering. Your stats for that match (eliminations, damage, healing) still count toward your career profile, and any challenges or missions progress are updated as usual.

Exiting the Game: What Counts as Leaving

Exiting the game can mean two things: quitting the match before it ends, or closing the application after the match is over. If you exit after a surrender or a natural match conclusion, nothing happens—you simply go back to the menu. However, if you exit during an active match without surrendering, the game treats it as an abandonment. In quick play, repeated early exits can trigger a matchmaking penalty that increases with frequency. In competitive, leaving a match early results in an immediate loss of rank points, and you may be temporarily banned from queuing for ranked matches. The game also marks you as a leaver, which affects your endorsement level and can reduce the rewards you earn at the end of a season.

Surrender vs. Exit: Which Is Better?

If your team is losing badly and you want to move on, surrendering is almost always better than exiting. Surrendering gives your team a clean loss with no extra penalties, and it saves everyone time. Exiting early, on the other hand, punishes you specifically: you lose rank points in competitive, you get a ban from matchmaking, and your teammates are left to play a 5v6. In quick play, the stakes are lower, but repeated exits can still lead to a temporary suspension. There is no benefit to exiting over surrendering—if the surrender vote fails and you still leave, you take the penalty anyway.

Common Problems and Misconceptions

One common misconception is that surrendering forfeits your loot boxes or battle pass progress—it does not. You still earn XP and complete challenges for the match, even if you lose. Another issue players run into is the surrender vote not appearing. In competitive, the vote is only available after the first round, and in some modes, it may be disabled entirely until a certain time. If the vote option is grayed out, it means the game does not allow surrender at that moment. Also, if a teammate disconnects early, the game may allow an early surrender without a full vote—this is a special rule to protect teams from unfair matches. Finally, exiting the game entirely (closing the app) is not the same as surrendering. The game detects the disconnect and applies the leaver penalty, even if you had intended to surrender.

How to Surrender on Different Platforms

The surrender option is in the pause menu on all platforms. On PC, press the Escape key to open the menu, then click the surrender button. On PlayStation and Xbox, press the Options or Menu button to open the same menu. The vote prompt appears on the side of the screen, and you use the same button you would for confirming actions to vote yes. On the Nintendo Switch, the pause menu is accessed with the Plus button. The process is identical across platforms—there is no platform-specific trick to surrendering faster.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I surrender in the middle of a round? Yes, but only after the match has progressed past a certain point. In quick play, you can surrender after the first minute; in competitive, you must wait until the first round ends or a set time has elapsed.

Does surrendering affect my rank more than losing normally? No. A surrender counts as a standard loss, so you lose the same amount of rank points you would if the match ended naturally.

What happens if I exit after the surrender vote passes? Nothing extra. The match is already over, so you return to the main menu without any penalty.

Can I avoid the leaver penalty by surrendering right before exiting? Yes, if the vote passes. But if the vote fails and you exit, you will be treated as a leaver.

Does surrendering give the enemy team more XP? No. The enemy team gets the win and the associated rewards, but there is no bonus XP for winning via surrender.

Why is the surrender option grayed out? It is likely too early in the match, or the game mode does not allow surrender at that moment. Check the timer and try again later.
