Milo Ventimiglia Leads Call of Duty Black Ops 7?

No, Milo Ventimiglia is not leading Call of Duty Black Ops 7 as David Mason. As of the latest official announcements, there is no confirmed casting for any actor in the role of David Mason for a future Black Ops title, and Ventimiglia has not been linked to the franchise by Activision or Treyarch. This article explains where the rumor came from, what is actually known about Black Ops 7, and who David Mason is in the game series.

Where the Rumor Started

The rumor appears to stem from fan casting and speculative articles. Milo Ventimiglia, known for This Is Us and Gilmore Girls, has a similar rugged look to the character David Mason as depicted in Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Some YouTube videos and Reddit threads have suggested him for the role, but none of these are based on official statements. Activision and Treyarch have not announced any casting for a Black Ops 7, and the game itself has not been officially revealed under that name.

What We Know About Black Ops 7

As of mid-2025, Activision has not officially announced a game titled Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. The most recent mainline entries are Modern Warfare III (2023) and Black Ops 6 (2024). Reports from industry insiders suggest that Treyarch is working on a direct sequel to Black Ops 6, possibly set in the early 2030s, but no plot details or cast have been confirmed. The title may be Black Ops 7, but that is speculative.

Who Is David Mason?

David Mason is the protagonist of Call of Duty: Black Ops II (2012). He is the son of Alex Mason, the protagonist of the first Black Ops, and a U.S. Navy SEAL. In the game, David (callsign “Section) leads a strike force against a Nicaraguan arms dealer named Raul Menendez. He is voiced by actor Rich McDonald and his face is modeled after McDonald, not Ventimiglia. David Mason appears in the Strike Force missions and the main campaign, but he is not the only playable character; Alex Mason appears in flashback levels set in the 1980s.

Why Fans Want Ventimiglia

Fan casting often happens because of physical resemblance. Ventimiglia has a square jaw, short dark hair, and a military-friendly build that matches the in-game model of David Mason. In Black Ops II, David is in his late 30s, and Ventimiglia is now in his late 40s, which is a bit older but still plausible for a seasoned soldier. Some fans also point to Ventimiglia’s role as a Marine in This Is Us (though that character was a firefighter, not a soldier) and his voice work in video games like Marvel vs. Capcom 3 as evidence he could handle the role. However, none of this is official.

How Casting Works in Call of Duty

Call of Duty games typically use professional voice actors and motion-capture performers, not necessarily A-list celebrities. While some games have featured famous actors (e.g., Kevin Spacey in Advanced Warfare, Kit Harington in Infinite Warfare), most main characters are voiced by lesser-known actors. The casting process is internal and not publicized until the game’s release or a trailer. If a celebrity is cast, it is usually announced at a reveal event. Since no such announcement exists for Ventimiglia, the rumor is unsubstantiated.

Common Misconceptions

One common misconception is that David Mason is the main character of the entire Black Ops series. In reality, he only appears in Black Ops II and a brief cameo in Black Ops 4’s Zombies mode (as a voice). Another is that the next game will be a direct adaptation of the Black Ops II story. Treyarch has never remade a game, and the Black Ops series has always moved forward with new characters and storylines. Also, some fans confuse David Mason with his father, Alex Mason, who is played by Sam Worthington in the first game. The two are different characters with different actors.

What to Expect from the Next Black Ops

Based on the pattern of recent releases, the next Black Ops game will likely be a new story with a new protagonist, set in a near-future or modern setting. It may include references to past characters, but it is unlikely to center on David Mason. The franchise has moved away from the 1980s/2020s storyline of Black Ops II. If the game is set in the 2030s, as some leaks suggest, it could feature a new cast. Until Activision makes an official announcement, any specific plot or casting is pure speculation.
