To clear the Thieves Retreat dungeon in Mortal Shell 2, you must defeat the boss at its deepest chamber, the Vaultkeeper, which unlocks the exit and the dungeon’s unique reward. This guide covers the full route, key loot, enemy patterns, and the boss fight so you can finish the dungeon in one clean run.

Dungeon Overview and Location

Thieves Retreat is a mid-game dungeon found in the eastern cliffs of the Fallgrim outskirts, marked by a broken wooden gate and a trail of scattered coin purses. It is a linear, three-floor structure: the Courtyard, the Vault Hall, and the Treasure Vault. The dungeon is designed for players around level 20-25, and it rewards a unique weapon, the Gilded Shiv, plus a large sum of Tar (the game’s currency). Unlike the open world, the dungeon is instanced, so enemies do not respawn until you leave and re-enter.

Preparation Before Entering

Before you step inside, make sure you have the following:

  • Health and Resolve items: Carry at least 5 Tainted Nectar (heals 30% HP) and 3 Quicksilver Vials (restores Resolve for special attacks).
  • Weapon upgrade: Have your main weapon at +3 or higher; the dungeon’s enemies have high poise.
  • Shell choice: Use the Eredrim shell for its high HP, or the Solomon shell for extra Resolve to spam abilities.
  • Consumable bombs: Bring 2-3 Firebombs to deal with the shielded Vault Guards.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

Follow these steps to clear the dungeon efficiently:

  1. Enter the Courtyard: Immediately after entering, you’ll face two Thug Archers on a balcony. Use a crossbow to pick them off before they alert the melee fighters below.
  2. Clear the Courtyard: Defeat the three Thug Skirmishers (fast, dagger-wielding enemies). They have a three-hit combo; parry the third hit to stagger them.
  3. Find the lever: In the northwest corner of the Courtyard, there is a hidden lever behind a breakable wall. Pull it to open the Vault Hall door.
  4. Vault Hall: This room contains two Vault Guards (shielded, slow) and one Trapmaster (throws caltrops). Kill the Trapmaster first, then deal with the guards by breaking their shield with a heavy attack.
  5. Treasure Vault approach: The hallway leading to the boss has pressure plates that trigger poison darts. Walk along the left wall to avoid them.
  6. Boss fight: Enter the Treasure Vault and fight the Vaultkeeper (described below).
  7. Exit: After the boss dies, the vault door opens, and you can loot the Gilded Shiv from the pedestal, then use the exit portal behind it.

Enemy Breakdown and Tactics

Each enemy type requires a specific approach:

  • Thug Skirmishers: Fast, low HP. Use a light attack chain to interrupt their lunges. They drop 20 Tar each.
  • Thug Archers: They stay at range and fire volleys. Use a crossbow or throw a dagger to stagger them, then close in.
  • Vault Guards: They block frontal attacks. Use a heavy attack (hold the attack button) to break their guard, then follow up with a riposte.
  • Trapmaster: He throws caltrops that slow you. Roll through them, then punish his recovery animation. He has the most HP of the regular enemies.

Boss Fight: The Vaultkeeper

The Vaultkeeper is a large, armored figure with a massive mace. It has three phases:

  • Phase 1 (100%-70% HP): It uses slow overhead slams and a horizontal sweep. Wait for the slam, dodge to the side, and get one or two hits in.
  • Phase 2 (70%-30% HP): It gains a shockwave attack (jump and slam). Jump over the shockwave or roll through it. It also starts summoning two Thug Skirmishers once. Kill them quickly.
  • Phase 3 (30%-0% HP): It becomes enraged, with faster combos and a new lunge attack. Use your Resolve weapon ability (heavy attack with full Resolve) to stagger it, then finish it off.

Recommended strategy: Stay mid-range, bait the overhead slam, dodge forward-left, and attack its back. Use a Firebomb when it’s at 50% HP to stagger it and get a free combo.

Rewards and Loot

Clearing the dungeon gives you:

  • Gilded Shiv: A unique dagger with a 15% chance to apply a bleed effect on hit. It scales with Dexterity.
  • 500 Tar: The currency for upgrades, found in chests and from enemies.
  • Vaultkeeper’s Seal: A consumable that increases your damage by 20% for 30 seconds. Useful for the next area.
  • Two Glimpses: Used to unlock new abilities in the skill tree.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Players often die in this dungeon due to a few avoidable errors:

  • Rushing the Courtyard: The archers will hit you while you fight melee enemies. Always clear ranged enemies first.
  • Ignoring the Trapmaster: His caltrops slow you, making you vulnerable to the Vault Guards. Kill him before engaging the guards.
  • Blocking the Vaultkeeper’s shockwave: Blocking the shockwave drains half your stamina. Roll through it instead.
  • Not using consumables: The dungeon is balanced around using your items. Don’t hoard them; use Nectar when below 50% HP.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave and come back later?

Yes, the dungeon is not locked once you enter. You can leave at any time through the entrance portal, and your progress (enemies killed, levers pulled) is saved. However, the boss will respawn if you leave before defeating it, but the regular enemies stay dead.

What level should I be for Thieves Retreat?

It is recommended to be at least level 20 with a +3 weapon. The enemies hit hard, and the boss has a large HP pool. If you’re struggling, go explore the Fallgrim area to gain a few levels and upgrade your weapon.

Is the Gilded Shiv worth it?

Yes, if you’re playing a Dexterity build. The bleed effect is powerful against bosses, and the dagger’s attack speed is high. For strength builds, the Tar and Glimpses are still worth the run.

How do I get more Resolve for the boss fight?

Resolve is gained by landing hits and parrying. Before the boss, you can build Resolve by killing the enemies in the Vault Hall and then using a Quicksilver Vial to fill it instantly. Also, the Solomon shell gives +2 Resolve bars.

What happens if I die to the Vaultkeeper?

You respawn at the entrance of the dungeon, and the boss retains its current HP. You can retry as many times as you want, but the regular enemies do not respawn, so you won’t lose progress. Your Tar is dropped at the boss room and can be recovered by reaching it again.

Is there a shortcut to the boss?

Yes, after you pull the lever in the Courtyard, a hidden door opens in the Vault Hall that leads directly to the Treasure Vault approach, bypassing the Trapmaster area. Look for a cracked wall on the east side of the Vault Hall.
