OneNote Not Responding? Fixes That Work

Card No. 06·49562 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

If OneNote is stuck on “Not Responding,” the quickest fix is to force-close it and reopen it, then check for a pending update. If it keeps freezing, the cause is usually a large notebook, a sync conflict, or an add-in, and this guide walks through each fix in order.

Why OneNote Freezes

OneNote can stop responding for several reasons, and the fix depends on which version you use. The free Windows 10 app, the Microsoft 365 desktop version, and the Mac version each have slightly different settings and menus. Common triggers include:

  • A notebook stored on a slow or disconnected network drive
  • A very large page with many images, embedded files, or long handwritten notes
  • Sync conflicts with multiple devices editing the same page
  • An outdated version with a known bug
  • Conflicting add-ins or a corrupted local cache

Most freezes are temporary, but if they happen repeatedly, the steps below address the root cause rather than just restarting the app.

First Steps: Force Close and Restart

When OneNote is frozen, the first thing to do is close it completely. On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, find OneNote under “Processes,” right-click it, and choose End Task. On a Mac, press Option+Command+Esc, select OneNote, and click Force Quit.

Before reopening, check if a new version is available. On Windows, go to the Microsoft Store and click Library then Get updates for the Store version, or open any Office app and go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now for the desktop version. On Mac, open the App Store and click Updates. Microsoft regularly releases fixes for freezing issues, so this is often the simplest permanent solution.

Check for Sync Problems

If OneNote freezes when opening a specific notebook, the problem is likely sync-related. OneNote syncs notebooks to OneDrive, and if the local copy is out of sync or the server is unreachable, the app can hang.

  1. Open OneNote and go to File > Info (Windows) or OneNote > Settings (Mac).
  2. Look for any sync errors next to the notebook name. If you see a warning, click it to view the error details.
  3. Try closing the notebook and reopening it: right-click the notebook name in the navigation bar and choose Close This Notebook, then reopen it from the notebook list.
  4. If sync is stuck, sign out of OneDrive and sign back in. On Windows, go to File > Account and click Sign Out, then sign in again.

If you are using a notebook stored on a network drive or a USB stick, move it to OneDrive. OneNote is designed for cloud storage, and local network drives often cause freezing because the app waits for the drive to respond.

Reduce Notebook Size and Complexity

Large notebooks with thousands of pages or pages full of high-resolution images can slow OneNote to a crawl. The app tries to load the entire page into memory, and if it is too large, it stops responding.

  • Split a large notebook into smaller ones: right-click the notebook name, choose New Notebook, and move sections by dragging them.
  • Avoid pasting very large images directly into a page. Instead, insert them as files or use a compressed version.
  • If a single page has dozens of embedded files, move some to a separate page or a file attachment.
  • Delete old sections you no longer need, or archive them to a separate notebook.

For handwritten notes, large ink strokes can also cause problems. If you use a stylus, try reducing the page size or splitting the content into multiple pages.

Disable Add-ins and Repair the Installation

Add-ins, especially third-party ones, can interfere with OneNote and cause it to freeze. On Windows, go to File > Options > Add-ins and disable any add-ins you don’t need. On Mac, check OneNote > Preferences for any installed extensions.

If disabling add-ins doesn’t help, repair the Office installation. On Windows, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft Office or OneNote, click the three-dot menu, and choose Modify. Select Quick Repair first, and if that doesn’t work, try Online Repair. This re-downloads and replaces any corrupted files without deleting your notebooks.

Clear the OneNote Cache

A corrupted cache can cause OneNote to hang, especially after a crash. Clearing the cache forces OneNote to rebuild it from the cloud, which often fixes persistent freezes.

On Windows, close OneNote, then press Win+R, type %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneNote, and press Enter. Look for a folder named 16.0 (or similar) and inside it, a cache folder. Rename the cache folder to cache_old and restart OneNote. It will create a new cache and resync your notebooks. On Mac, go to ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.onenote.mac/Data/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/OneNote and rename the Cache folder similarly.

This process is safe—your notes are stored in the cloud, not in the cache—but it may take a few minutes for OneNote to re-download everything.

When Nothing Else Works

If OneNote still freezes after all these steps, try the following in order:

  1. Reset OneNote settings (Windows): close OneNote, press Win+R, type onenote /reset, and press Enter. This resets the app’s settings without deleting notebooks.
  2. Reinstall OneNote (Windows Store version): uninstall from Settings > Apps, then reinstall from the Microsoft Store.
  3. Use the web version: open onenote.com in your browser. If it works fine there, the problem is local to your app, not your data.
  4. Export and reimport: as a last resort, export the problematic notebook to a .onepkg file (File > Export) and then import it into a new notebook. This can clear any hidden corruption.

If none of these help, the issue may be with your Windows or Mac system itself—check for operating system updates, and make sure your device meets the minimum requirements for the latest OneNote version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose my notes if I force close OneNote?

No. OneNote saves your notes continuously to the cloud, so even if the app is frozen, your last sync is safe. When you reopen it, it will sync any changes that were made before the freeze. If you had unsynced changes, they will sync once the app recovers.

Why does OneNote freeze when I open a specific page?

That page is likely too large or contains a problematic element like a huge image, an embedded file, or a long audio recording. Try opening the page in the web version, and if it loads, delete or move the large content. You can also split the page into multiple pages.

Does OneNote freeze more on Windows or Mac?

Both versions have had freezing issues at different times, but the Windows 10 app and the Microsoft 365 desktop version are more common. Mac users see fewer sync-related freezes, but large pages can still cause problems. The fixes are similar on both platforms.

Can a slow internet connection cause OneNote to freeze?

Yes. If OneNote is trying to sync a large notebook over a slow or unstable connection, it can appear frozen. Try opening the notebook in the web version to see if it loads faster, and consider working offline (File > Settings > Sync) if you have a large notebook.

Is there a way to prevent OneNote from freezing in the future?

Keep OneNote updated, avoid storing notebooks on network drives, keep pages under a few megabytes, and regularly close and reopen the app to clear memory. Also, avoid using too many add-ins, and make sure your device has enough free RAM—OneNote can use a lot of memory with large notebooks.
