Palia Tool Upgrades: Full Guide

Card No. 06·48807 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

To upgrade your tools in Palia, you need to visit Sifuu at her forge in Kilima Village and pay a combination of gold, standard resources, and rare Palium ore. Each tool has four upgrade tiers — Makeshift, Standard, Fine, and Exquisite — and each tier increases efficiency, reduces stamina drain, and unlocks new gathering capabilities.

How Tool Upgrades Work

Tool upgrades in Palia are handled exclusively by Sifuu, the blacksmith NPC located in the central area of Kilima Village, near the entrance to the Underground. You can find her at her anvil during most daytime hours. When you talk to her, select “Upgrade Tools” to see a list of all your current tools and their upgrade options.

Each tool has four tiers:

  • Makeshift — the starting tool you craft early in the main questline.
  • Standard — the first upgrade, requiring basic materials like copper or iron.
  • Fine — the second upgrade, requiring higher-tier ores and more gold.
  • Exquisite — the final upgrade, requiring Palium bars and rare resources.

Upgrades are permanent; you do not need to re-craft or repair tools. Once you pay the cost, the tool is immediately upgraded and stays with you forever.

All Tools and Their Upgrade Materials

There are six tools in Palia that can be upgraded: Axe, Pickaxe, Fishing Rod, Bow, Hoe, and Watering Can. Below is a breakdown of the materials required for each tier. Note that all upgrade costs also include a gold fee, which increases with each tier.

Axe Upgrades

  • Standard Axe: 5 Copper Bars, 1,000 Gold
  • Fine Axe: 5 Iron Bars, 1,500 Gold
  • Exquisite Axe: 5 Palium Bars, 2,500 Gold

Pickaxe Upgrades

  • Standard Pickaxe: 5 Copper Bars, 1,000 Gold
  • Fine Pickaxe: 5 Iron Bars, 1,500 Gold
  • Exquisite Pickaxe: 5 Palium Bars, 2,500 Gold

Fishing Rod Upgrades

  • Standard Rod: 5 Copper Bars, 1,000 Gold
  • Fine Rod: 5 Iron Bars, 1,500 Gold
  • Exquisite Rod: 5 Palium Bars, 2,500 Gold

Bow Upgrades

  • Standard Bow: 5 Copper Bars, 1,000 Gold
  • Fine Bow: 5 Iron Bars, 1,500 Gold
  • Exquisite Bow: 5 Palium Bars, 2,500 Gold

Hoe Upgrades

  • Standard Hoe: 5 Copper Bars, 1,000 Gold
  • Fine Hoe: 5 Iron Bars, 1,500 Gold
  • Exquisite Hoe: 5 Palium Bars, 2,500 Gold

Watering Can Upgrades

  • Standard Watering Can: 5 Copper Bars, 1,000 Gold
  • Fine Watering Can: 5 Iron Bars, 1,500 Gold
  • Exquisite Watering Can: 5 Palium Bars, 2,500 Gold

Note: The material costs are the same for every tool at each tier. However, the gold cost increases as you progress. Some tools may also require a specific crafting station to be upgraded first (e.g., the Smelter to make bars).

How to Get the Required Materials

To upgrade your tools, you need to gather the following resources:

  • Copper Ore: Found in the caves and rocks around Kilima Valley, especially near the waterfall and the eastern cliffs. Smelt 5 Copper Ore into 1 Copper Bar at a Smelter.
  • Iron Ore: Found in the northern regions of Bahari Bay, particularly around the mines and rocky areas. Smelt 5 Iron Ore into 1 Iron Bar.
  • Palium Ore: A rare ore found in Bahari Bay, usually in caves or on high cliffs. It glows blue and is often guarded by rock formations. Smelt 5 Palium Ore into 1 Palium Bar.
  • Gold: Earned by selling items, completing quests, or participating in activities like fishing, bug catching, and cooking.

To smelt ores, you need a Smelter, which you can craft at your Housing Plot after unlocking the crafting table. Place the Smelter and add fuel (like wood) and ore to produce bars.

Why Upgrade Your Tools?

Upgrading your tools is essential for progressing in Palia because higher-tier tools are required to gather higher-tier resources. For example:

  • A Standard Pickaxe is needed to mine Iron Ore, which is required for Fine tier upgrades.
  • A Fine Pickaxe is needed to mine Palium Ore, which is required for Exquisite tier upgrades.
  • A Fine Axe is needed to chop certain rare trees that drop rare wood.

Additionally, upgraded tools consume less stamina per swing, allowing you to gather more before needing to rest or eat. They also deal more damage when used as weapons (Axe, Pickaxe, Bow) against creatures.

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

One common misconception is that you need to craft a new tool from scratch for each upgrade. In reality, you only need to pay the upgrade cost at Sifuu; she will upgrade your existing tool. Another mistake is trying to mine Palium with a Standard Pickaxe — it won’t work. You must have at least a Fine Pickaxe to extract Palium Ore. Similarly, you cannot chop rare trees with a Standard Axe; you need a Fine Axe.

Another common error is ignoring the Smelter. You cannot upgrade tools without bars, and bars only come from smelting ores. Make sure your Smelter is fueled and running before you attempt to upgrade.

Cost Comparison and Efficiency

Upgrading all six tools to Exquisite will cost a total of 30 Palium Bars and 15,000 Gold (6 tools × 5 bars each and 6 tools × 2,500 gold each). That’s a significant investment, so prioritize which tools to upgrade first. Most players recommend upgrading the Pickaxe first, because Palium is the bottleneck for other upgrades, and a better pickaxe lets you gather Palium faster. Next, upgrade the Axe to access rare wood, which is used in high-tier furniture and some quests.

For early game, focus on getting the Standard Pickaxe and Standard Axe to unlock Iron Ore and rare wood, which will then allow you to craft Fine tools.

Safety and Efficiency Tips

While gathering materials, always carry a few healing items or food to restore stamina. Mining and chopping consume stamina, and if you run out, you’ll be forced to rest or eat. Also, keep an eye on your surroundings — some areas have aggressive creatures that can interrupt your gathering. Use your bow to defend yourself if needed.

When smelting, remember that you can queue multiple bars at once, but each bar takes time (Copper and Iron take a few minutes, Palium takes longer). Plan ahead and start smelting before you need the bars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upgrade my tools without Palium?

No, the Exquisite tier requires Palium Bars. Palium is the only way to reach the final upgrade. You’ll need at least a Fine Pickaxe to mine Palium, so you must progress through the tiers in order.

Do tool upgrades affect fishing?

Yes, upgrading your Fishing Rod increases your casting distance and reduces the stamina drain while reeling in fish. It also allows you to catch higher-tier fish that are otherwise impossible to catch with a weaker rod.

Can I skip a tier and go straight to Fine?

No, you must upgrade sequentially. You cannot jump from Makeshift to Fine; you must first get the Standard tier, then Fine, then Exquisite.

Do upgraded tools break or need repairs?

No, tools in Palia do not degrade or break. Once you upgrade, the tool is permanently improved.

Where can I find Palium Ore?

Palium Ore is found in Bahari Bay, primarily in the caves and on the cliffs near the northern part of the map. It appears as a glowing blue ore node. You need a Fine Pickaxe to mine it.

Is there a way to speed up smelting?

You can build multiple Smelters and place them on your plot. Each Smelter works independently, so having two or three running at once speeds up production significantly.
