There is no fishing mechanic in Palworld, so the best “fishing team” is actually the best team for catching Water-type Pals and gathering water resources. You need a mix of a strong Water Pal for combat and taming, a fast ground Pal for traversing rivers and coasts, and a flying Pal for spotting rare spawns from above.

Formula

Effective search speed = Distance traveled (km) ÷ (Time spent (min) ÷ 60). This gives you a single number to compare how efficient different Pal loadouts are at covering water and shoreline areas. Variables: d = distance in kilometers, t = time in minutes, result in km/h.

Worked Example

Using the defaults: you travel 2 km in 5 minutes. First, convert minutes to hours: 5 ÷ 60 = 0.0833 hours. Then divide distance by time: 2 ÷ 0.0833 = 24.0 km/h. That is your effective search speed.

Why There Is No Fishing Rod

Palworld launched in early access in January 2024. The core loop is survival, base building, and capturing Pals. Water Pals like Pengullet, Fuack, and Teafant are caught by weakening them in battle and throwing a Pal Sphere. There is no fishing minigame, no fishing rod item, and no fish-type Pals. The closest activity is “fishing” for Pals in the sense of hunting Water-types near lakes and oceans.

If you came from games like Minecraft or Stardew Valley, this is a common misconception. The community often jokes about “fishing” when they mean “hunting for rare Water Pals.” Knowing this saves you from searching for a non-existent item.

Core Team Roles for Water Pal Hunting

To efficiently catch Water Pals, you need three roles:

  • Damage/Weaken: A Pal that can deal non-lethal chip damage. Use a low-level Fire or Electric Pal to avoid one-shotting. Example: Sparkit or Foxparks.
  • Status Inflictor: A Pal that can apply Sleep or Poison to raise catch rates. Example: Daedream (Sleep) or Gumoss (Poison).
  • Utility/Transport: A fast mount for water and land. Example: Surfent for water traversal, or a flying mount like Nitewing for spotting from above.

You can carry up to five Pals in your party. A balanced team for this purpose is: one Water Pal for riding across water, one Fire or Electric Pal for combat, one Grass Pal for status, and two flex slots for whatever you are trying to catch.

Best Pals for Each Role

Based on common community testing and spawn data:

  • Water Mount: Surfent – fast on water, easy to find early, decent stamina. Azurobe is a stronger alternative but rarer.
  • Combat Weaken: Sparkit (Electric) – low damage, can stun. Also good against Water types.
  • Status: Daedream – learns Sleep Spore, which makes capture much easier. Found in caves.
  • Flying Scout: Nitewing – large stamina pool, lets you hover over lakes to spot glowing Pals. You can also use a flying mount to drop onto water Pals and start battle.

A common mistake is bringing a high-level Water Pal to fight other Water Pals. Water moves are not very effective against Water types, so you waste time. Use Electric or Grass moves instead.

How to Catch Water Pals Efficiently

Follow these steps for a successful catch:

  1. Locate a Water Pal near a lake or ocean. Use your flying mount to scan the shoreline.
  2. Approach slowly. If you sprint, the Pal may run away or aggro.
  3. Deal damage until the HP bar is in the red (below 20%). Use a low-level Pal to avoid killing it.
  4. Apply a status effect like Sleep or Poison to increase the capture rate.
  5. Throw a Pal Sphere. If it breaks out, repeat steps 3-5 with better spheres or higher-level Pals.

Use Mega Spheres or Giga Spheres for rare Water Pals like Azurobe. The capture rate also depends on the Pal’s level relative to yours – being 5+ levels higher helps significantly.

Common Problems and Solutions

Problem: Your Pal keeps killing the target. Solution: switch to a lower-level Pal or unequip your best weapon. Problem: You cannot find Water Pals. Solution: check the eastern coast of the starting island and the lakes near the Ravine Entrance. Problem: The Pal runs away. Solution: use a flying mount to chase it or use a Pal with a ranged attack to initiate from a distance.

Another common issue is running out of Pal Spheres. Always carry at least 20 regular spheres and 5 Mega Spheres when hunting. Craft them at a Pal Sphere Workbench before heading out.

Alternatives to Hunting

If you do not want to catch Water Pals in the wild, you can breed them. Breeding requires a Breeding Farm, which you unlock at level 19. Place a male and female Water Pal in the farm, feed them cake, and wait. This yields an egg that hatches into a baby Pal. This is more reliable for getting specific traits like Swift or Runner, which improve water mount speed.

Alternatively, you can buy Pals from wandering merchants. Some merchants sell common Water Pals like Pengullet for a few hundred gold coins. This is fast but expensive early game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is there a fishing rod in Palworld? No. The game has no fishing mechanic as of the current early access version. You catch Pals by battling and throwing spheres.

Q: What is the fastest Water Pal for swimming? Surfent is the fastest common water mount. Azurobe is slightly slower but has better combat stats. Jormuntide is the fastest overall but is a rare boss spawn.

Q: Can I catch Water Pals without fighting? No, you must weaken them. However, you can use a Pal with a low-damage move like Scratch to chip them down safely.

Q: What Pal Sphere should I use for high-level Water Pals? Use Giga Spheres or Hyper Spheres for Pals above level 20. Regular spheres will fail most of the time.

Q: Do Water Pals drop anything special? Yes, they often drop Pal Fluids, which are used for crafting circuits and other tech items. This makes hunting them worthwhile even after you have caught one.

Q: How do I increase my capture rate? Lower the Pal’s HP, apply a status effect, use a better sphere, and be higher level than the target. Also, craft the Pal Capture Power charm from the tech tree.
