Persona 5 Skill Cards: How They Work

Card No. 06·18303 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Yes, Persona 5 uses skill cards, and they are a core item for customizing your party’s abilities. You can obtain them by negotiating with Shadows during battle, and then use them to teach any character a specific skill, bypassing the normal level-up or fusion restrictions. This guide explains everything you need to know about skill cards in Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal.

What Are Skill Cards?

Skill cards are consumable items that, when used on a party member, permanently teach them the skill printed on the card. Unlike skill inheritance during fusion, which is limited to the resulting Persona, a skill card can be used on any character—including the protagonist, your teammates, and even your active Personas. This makes them a powerful tool for covering weaknesses, building specialized roles, or transferring rare abilities that would otherwise be impossible to obtain on certain characters.

Each card corresponds to a single skill, from basic attacks like “Cleave” to powerful almighty spells like “Megidolaon.” Once used, the card is consumed, and the character learns the skill immediately, regardless of their current level or the skill’s normal unlock requirements.

How to Get Skill Cards

There are three main ways to obtain skill cards in Persona 5:

  • Shadows during battle: When you negotiate with a Shadow and successfully recruit it or get it to give you an item, it may drop a skill card. The type of card is often related to the Shadow’s own skills or arcana.
  • Electric Chair in the Velvet Room: After you unlock the Electric Chair (available after the second palace), you can sacrifice a Persona to create a skill card. The resulting card is based on the Persona’s skills, and the exact card is determined by the Persona’s level and the day of the week (in the original P5) or by using specific Personas (in P5 Royal).
  • Network Fusion (P5 Royal only): In Royal, you can also obtain skill cards through Network Fusion, though this is less reliable and more random.

In the original Persona 5, the Electric Chair is the most reliable source for specific cards, but you can only use it once per day. In Royal, the system was reworked so that the card you get is tied to the specific Persona you sacrifice, making it much easier to farm exactly what you need.

How to Use Skill Cards

Using a skill card is straightforward:

  1. Open the menu and go to Items.
  2. Select the skill card from your inventory.
  3. Choose Use.
  4. Select the character you want to teach the skill to (the protagonist, a teammate, or a specific Persona in your stock).

That’s it. The character permanently gains the skill. If the character already knows that skill, you cannot use the card on them—it will be grayed out. Also, if the character has a full skill list (8 skills for party members, 8 for Personas), you will be prompted to replace one of their existing skills with the new one.

Choosing the Right Skill Cards

When deciding which skill cards to use, consider the following:

  • Cover weaknesses: Give a party member a skill that covers their elemental weakness. For example, giving Ann a healing skill like “Dia” can make her more self-sufficient, or giving Yusuke a “Marakukaja” (party defense buff) can make him a better support.
  • Fill role gaps: If your team lacks a specific buff or debuff, use a card to fill that gap. For instance, “Thermopylae” (party-wide heat riser) is a great card to give to a character who otherwise lacks support options.
  • Transfer high-tier magic: Some powerful skills like “Concentrate” or “Charge” are only naturally learned by a few Personas. Using a card to teach these to your main damage dealer can dramatically increase their output.
  • Build a specific Persona: For the protagonist, you can use skill cards to create a custom Persona that covers multiple roles—like a healer with fire magic, or a physical attacker with debuffs.

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

One common mistake is assuming that skill cards are one-time use per character. They are not—each card is consumed on use, so if you want two characters to have the same skill, you need two cards. Another misconception is that you can use skill cards on any Persona, but you cannot use a card on a Persona that already knows that skill. Also, some players think that the Electric Chair in the original P5 gives a random card, but it’s actually tied to the day of the week. In Royal, the card is tied to the Persona sacrificed, so you can plan ahead.

Another pitfall: using a skill card on a party member who already has a full skill list will replace a skill. Make sure you choose which skill to overwrite carefully, as you cannot undo it without reloading a save.

Skill Cards vs. Fusion Inheritance

Skill cards and fusion inheritance serve different purposes. Fusion inheritance lets you pass up to four skills from the fusion ingredients to the resulting Persona, but it is limited to the skills that the ingredients know. Skill cards are a way to add a skill to any character or Persona, regardless of what they know. In practice, you’ll often use both: fuse a Persona with good base skills, then use skill cards to add the missing pieces. For example, you might fuse a Persona with “Bufudyne” and then use a card to add “Ice Boost” to enhance its damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can skill cards be used on any party member?

Yes, skill cards can be used on any character in your active party, including the protagonist, all teammates, and any Persona in your stock. The only restriction is that the character must not already know the skill.

Do skill cards carry over to New Game Plus?

Yes, skill cards are kept in your inventory when you start New Game Plus, as are all other items (except key items). This makes it possible to get powerful skills early in a new playthrough.

Can you get skill cards from negotiation every time?

No, negotiation does not always yield a skill card. The chance depends on the Shadow’s personality and how you respond. In general, Shadows that are more cooperative or that you recruit are more likely to give you a card, but it’s not guaranteed.

Are skill cards unlimited in Persona 5 Royal?

In Royal, the Electric Chair can be used multiple times per day by sacrificing different Personas, but each Persona can only be sacrificed once. So, in theory, you can get as many cards as you have Personas to sacrifice, but you’ll need to fuse new Personas to keep sacrificing.

What is the best skill card to farm?

That depends on your party composition, but some universally useful cards include “Concentrate,” “Charge,” “Heat Riser,” “Debilitate,” and “Almighty Boost.” These are high-impact skills that are hard to get otherwise.

Can you sell skill cards?

Yes, you can sell skill cards at the airsoft shop (Untouchable) in Yongen-Jaya. However, they are usually more valuable as usable items, so it’s generally better to keep them unless you have duplicates.
