Phantom Blade Zero: Serpent Eye, Tongue, and Fang are three separate in-game items tied to a side quest chain in the 2025 action RPG. You obtain them by defeating specific elite enemies and use them to unlock a hidden boss fight and a unique weapon. This article explains what each item does, where they drop, and how the quest chain works.

What Are the Serpent Eye, Tongue, and Fang?

In Phantom Blade Zero, the Serpent Eye, Serpent Tongue, and Serpent Fang are key items in the “Serpent’s Remains” questline. They are not currency or crafting materials—they are quest items that must be collected in a specific order to progress. The Eye is dropped by the elite enemy Blind Serpent in the Hollow Depths. The Tongue comes from Venomous Matriarch, a large snake boss in the Sunken Grotto. The Fang is obtained by defeating Scalebound Sentinel, a mini-boss guarding the entrance to the Serpent’s Coil dungeon.

Each item is a required component to open the sealed gate in the Serpent’s Coil. Without all three, the gate remains locked, and you cannot access the optional boss Orochi, the Devourer. The quest is available after you complete Chapter 4 and talk to the NPC Old Man Shen in the Whispering Woods.

How the Quest Chain Works

  1. Start the quest by speaking to Old Man Shen after Chapter 4. He mentions a sealed door in the Serpent’s Coil.
  2. Travel to the Hollow Depths and defeat the Blind Serpent. It is a fast enemy that uses poison attacks. The Eye drops with a 100% chance on first kill.
  3. Go to the Sunken Grotto and fight the Venomous Matriarch. This boss is weak to fire. The Tongue drops after you defeat it.
  4. Find the Scalebound Sentinel in the corridor before the Serpent’s Coil. It is a heavily armored knight. The Fang drops from it.
  5. Return to the Serpent’s Coil and use all three items at the altar. The gate opens, and you can fight Orochi.

Note that the items are consumed when you use them. If you die during the boss fight, you do not lose the items—they are already used and the gate stays open. However, if you leave the area before using them, they remain in your inventory.

Where to Find Each Item

Each item is tied to a specific enemy and location. Here is a breakdown:

  • Serpent Eye: Dropped by the Blind Serpent in the Hollow Depths. This area is accessible after you unlock the fast travel point in the Whispering Woods. The Blind Serpent is a humanoid snake that spits poison projectiles. It has about 2,500 HP on normal difficulty.
  • Serpent Tongue: Dropped by the Venomous Matriarch in the Sunken Grotto. This boss is a giant snake with a poison aura. It has two phases; in the second phase, it summons smaller snakes. Use fire-based skills to deal extra damage.
  • Serpent Fang: Dropped by the Scalebound Sentinel in the Serpent’s Coil entrance. This mini-boss uses a large sword and has high defense. Break its stance by parrying its heavy attacks.

All three enemies respawn if you leave the area and come back, but the items only drop the first time you defeat them. If you miss an item, you must reload a save before the fight or start a new game plus.

Common Misconceptions

Many players think the items are random drops, but they are guaranteed on the first kill. Another common mistake is selling them to a merchant. The game does not warn you that they are quest items, and if you sell them, you cannot progress. There is no way to buy them back, so you must reload a previous save. Also, some guides say you need to defeat the enemies in a specific order, but that is not true—you can collect them in any order. The gate only requires that you have all three in your inventory at the same time.

Another misconception is that the items are used for crafting a weapon. They are not. They only open the gate. The weapon you get from Orochi is a separate reward.

How to Use the Items

Once you have all three, go to the Serpent’s Coil. The gate is at the end of the main corridor. Interact with the altar in front of the gate. The game will prompt you to place the items. After placing them, a short cutscene plays, and the gate opens. You can then enter the boss arena. There is no time limit, but you cannot leave the area once you place the items—the gate locks behind you. If you are not ready, do not place them until you have stocked up on healing items and upgraded your gear.

Rewards and Why It Matters

Defeating Orochi, the Devourer, gives you the Serpent’s Bane, a unique katana that scales with both Strength and Spirit. It also grants a passive poison resistance. Additionally, you get the Serpent Hunter achievement/trophy. The boss is optional, but the weapon is one of the best in the game for a poison build. If you are aiming for 100% completion, you must complete this quest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get the items after I’ve already beaten the game?

Yes, in New Game Plus, the quest resets. You can collect the items again. If you missed them in your first playthrough, you can do the quest in NG+ and still get the weapon.

Do the enemies respawn if I leave the area?

The enemies respawn, but the items do not. The drop is a one-time reward. If you leave before picking up the item, it will still be on the ground. If you die after the enemy dies but before picking up the item, it stays on the ground. Only if you reload a save from before the fight will you get another chance.

What happens if I sell the items?

You cannot progress the quest. There is no way to recover them. You must reload a previous save. If you have already saved after selling, you may have to start a new game or NG+ to get them again.

Is there a level requirement for this quest?

There is no level requirement, but the enemies are tough. The Blind Serpent is around level 35, the Venomous Matriarch is level 40, and the Scalebound Sentinel is level 38. It is recommended to be at least level 40 before attempting all three.

Can I do this quest in co-op?

No, this quest is single-player only. The items are tied to your world, and co-op partners cannot pick them up or use them on your altar.

Is the Serpent’s Bane worth it?

Yes, if you are using a poison build. It has a base damage of 120 and adds 15 poison buildup per hit. The passive poison resistance is also useful in later areas. However, if you prefer a different build, you can skip it.
