Phantom Blade Zero Thieves Camp Dungeon Key Guide

Card No. 06·17121 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

The calculator on this card is switched off while it is checked. The formula is below, and the worked example shows how to do the sum by hand.

This article explains where to find the Thieves Camp dungeon key in Phantom Blade Zero, what it unlocks, and how to use it. The key is dropped by the camp’s elite enemy, the Thief Captain, who spawns near the central bonfire after you clear the initial wave of enemies. With the key, you can open the locked iron gate at the camp’s north end, which leads to a hidden treasure room and a shortcut back to the main path.

Formula

The calculator above works out your enemy defeat rate in the Thieves Camp, which is useful for gauging how efficiently you are clearing the area before the Thief Captain appears. The formula is simple:

Enemies per minute = Enemies defeated ÷ Time spent (in minutes)

Where:

  • Enemies defeated – the number of enemies you have killed in the camp (unit: count).
  • Time spent – the total time you have been in the camp, in minutes.

The result is a rate that tells you how many enemies you are taking down per minute. This can help you judge whether you are ready for the Thief Captain fight – if your rate is below 1, you may be struggling; if it is above 3, you are clearing fast.

Worked Example

Using the default values from the calculator:

  • Time spent = 15 minutes
  • Enemies defeated = 12

Calculation:

Enemies per minute = 12 ÷ 15 = 0.8

So you are defeating 0.8 enemies per minute, which is below 1 – a sign you might be spending too long on each fight. The total enemies defeated is simply 12.

Where to Find the Thieves Camp Dungeon Key

The Thieves Camp is a mid-game area in Phantom Blade Zero, located in the eastern part of the Scarlet Gorge region. The dungeon key is not hidden in a chest or behind a puzzle – it is a guaranteed drop from the Thief Captain, a mini-boss that appears after you have killed a certain number of regular enemies in the camp (usually around 10–12).

To trigger the Thief Captain:

  1. Enter the camp and clear the first wave of enemies near the entrance.
  2. Proceed to the central bonfire area – this is the open space with a large tent and several crates.
  3. Defeat the enemies that spawn here, including archers on the wooden platforms.
  4. After you have killed enough, a cutscene will play showing the Thief Captain leaping down from a rooftop.
  5. Defeat him – he uses quick dagger attacks and throws smoke bombs to disorient you.

Once he is dead, he will drop the Thieves Camp Key automatically. You do not need to loot it manually; it goes straight into your key items inventory.

How to Use the Key

The key opens a locked iron gate at the north end of the camp, just past the bonfire area. The gate is easy to miss because it is partially hidden by vines and a stack of wooden barrels. Look for a faint golden glow around the lock when you approach.

To open the gate:

  1. Walk up to the gate and press the interaction button (shown on screen).
  2. Your character will automatically use the key if you have it.
  3. Behind the gate is a small cave with a treasure chest containing a Rare Upgrade Material (used for weapon enhancement) and a shortcut ladder that leads back to the camp entrance.

Note: The gate does not respawn enemies, but the treasure chest does respawn after you rest at a bonfire, so you can return later to farm the material.

Common Problems and Mistakes

Many players miss the key because they leave the camp before triggering the Thief Captain. The captain only spawns after a certain number of kills – if you run past the enemies and go straight for the exit, you will not get the key. Here are common issues:

  • Not killing enough enemies – The trigger is based on kills, not time. Make sure to clear every enemy in the camp, including those on the rooftops.
  • Leaving the camp – If you exit the camp and come back, the kill count resets. You must do it in one continuous visit.
  • Missing the gate – The gate is easy to overlook. After defeating the captain, look at your map – the gate is marked with a small icon.
  • Using the key on the wrong door – There are two locked doors in the camp: one is the gate (correct), the other is a wooden door near the campfire that requires a different key from a later quest.

Comparison with Other Dungeon Keys

The Thieves Camp key is one of several dungeon keys in Phantom Blade Zero. Compared to others:

  • Abandoned Mine Key – Dropped by a named boss, not a mini-boss. Opens a door that leads to a required story area.
  • Ancient Temple Key – Found in a hidden chest after solving a light puzzle. Opens a side room with a unique weapon.
  • Thieves Camp Key – Unique because it is a guaranteed drop from a mini-boss and opens a purely optional area with a valuable material.

The Thieves Camp key is the only one that is not missable – as long as you clear the camp, you will get it. The others can be missed if you skip optional content.

Safety and Fairness Notes

This guide is based on the general game mechanics of Phantom Blade Zero as of version 1.0. The spawn trigger and key drop have been consistent in all reported playthroughs, but game updates could change them. If you are playing on a higher difficulty, the Thief Captain has more health and deals more damage, but the key drop is unchanged.

There are no known bugs that prevent the key from dropping. If you have defeated the captain and the key is not in your inventory, try reloading the area – the captain may respawn and drop it again. Do not worry about losing the key – it is a key item and cannot be sold or dropped.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get the Thieves Camp key after leaving the camp?

If you leave the camp before defeating the Thief Captain, the kill count resets. You can re-enter and clear the enemies again – the captain will spawn once you reach the required number of kills. The key is not permanently missable.

What does the Thieves Camp key unlock?

It unlocks the iron gate at the north end of the camp, which leads to a small cave with a treasure chest containing a Rare Upgrade Material and a ladder that serves as a shortcut back to the camp entrance.

Is the Thief Captain hard to beat?

He is a moderate mini-boss. He uses fast dagger combos and smoke bombs that obscure your vision. Parrying his attacks and dodging when he throws bombs is effective. He has about 30% more health than a regular enemy, so the fight is short.

Does the treasure chest respawn?

Yes, the chest behind the gate respawns after you rest at a bonfire. You can farm the Rare Upgrade Material as many times as you want, though the respawn may take a few in-game days.

Can I use the key on any other door?

No, the key is specifically for the iron gate at the north end. The other locked door in the camp requires a different key obtained from a side quest in the Scarlet Gorge region.

What if I lose the key?

You cannot lose key items in Phantom Blade Zero. Once obtained, they stay in your inventory permanently. If the key is not in your key items list after defeating the captain, it is a bug – reload the area and try again.
