To unlock the Desert biome in Plants vs. Brainrot, you must complete all 10 levels of the Forest biome and defeat its final boss, the Moldy Monarch. Once you finish that boss fight, the Desert biome unlocks automatically and appears on the world map, ready for you to enter.
Formula
The calculator above works out your average pace and speed for a given distance and finish time. The formulas are:
Pace = Finish time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)
Speed = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish time (minutes) ÷ 60)
Where:
- Finish time – total time taken, in minutes
- Distance – distance covered, in kilometers
- Pace – minutes per kilometer (min/km)
- Speed – kilometers per hour (km/h)
This is the standard way runners and cyclists measure their effort: pace tells you how long each kilometer takes, while speed tells you how far you travel in an hour.
Worked Example
Using the default values from the calculator: finish time = 50 minutes, distance = 10 km.
- Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
- Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h
So with the defaults, your average pace is 5 minutes per kilometer, and your average speed is 12 km/h. The calculator shows 5.00 and 12.00 respectively.
Why the Desert Biome Is Locked
In Plants vs. Brainrot, biomes are gated by progression, not by any hidden code or cheat. The Desert is the second biome in the game’s campaign, and it stays locked until you finish the entire Forest biome. The game tracks your completion per biome, showing a progress bar on the world map. If the Desert icon is greyed out with a lock symbol, it means you have not yet beaten the Forest’s final level.
Some players mistakenly think the Desert requires a certain number of stars or a specific plant level, but that is not the case. The only requirement is clearing all Forest levels, including the boss fight. There is no star rating requirement, no plant level threshold, and no need to replay levels for extra rewards.
How to Beat the Forest Boss Fast
The Moldy Monarch, the Forest boss, is a large brainrot creature that spawns waves of minions. To beat it efficiently:
- Bring splash-damage plants – plants like the Bloomerang or the Spud Cannon hit multiple enemies, clearing minion waves quickly.
- Keep a stun plant ready – the Stun-Shroom stops the boss from attacking for a few seconds, giving your damage dealers more time.
- Focus the boss, not the minions – minions will keep spawning, so killing them is less important than damaging the boss. Use plants that target the strongest enemy first.
- Upgrade your sun producers – you need a steady sun income to keep placing plants. Plant at least two Sunflowers early and upgrade them to Twin Sunflowers when possible.
Once the boss’s health bar reaches zero, the level ends and the Desert biome unlocks immediately. You will see a short cutscene and then the world map will show the Desert as available.
What to Expect in the Desert
The Desert biome introduces two new mechanics: sandstorms and cacti. Sandstorms randomly blow across the field, pushing your plants one tile to the right. This can disrupt your defenses, so you need to place plants with that in mind. Cacti are plants that shoot needles and can be planted on sand piles, which appear in some levels.
The enemies in the Desert are mostly fast-moving brainrot bugs and a new type called the Sand Worm, which burrows underground and emerges near your house. To counter the Sand Worm, use plants that attack underground, like the Spikeweed, or place mines in its path.
The Desert has 10 levels plus a boss, the Sunken Pharaoh, which is a large mummy-like brainrot that summons sandstorms more frequently. Beating this boss unlocks the next biome, the Swamp.
Common Problems and Misconceptions
One common issue is that players finish the Forest boss but the Desert still shows locked. This usually happens because the game did not save the progress, or the player exited the level before the victory screen. Make sure you let the victory screen play out fully before closing the app.
Another misconception is that you need to collect all stars in the Forest to unlock the Desert. That is false – stars are only for unlocking bonus plants and cosmetic items, not for biome progression. You only need to complete each level once.
Some players also think the Desert requires a certain player level. There is no player level system in the game; progression is purely level-based. If you are stuck on a specific Forest level, try changing your plant loadout – some levels are much easier with a particular strategy.
Alternatives to Unlocking the Desert
There is no alternative way to unlock the Desert biome in the normal campaign. However, if you are playing in Endless Mode, you can play Desert-themed levels from the start, because Endless Mode lets you choose any unlocked biome. If you have not unlocked the Desert in campaign, you will not see it in Endless Mode either.
Some players have tried to use save-file editing or mods to unlock the Desert early, but this is not recommended. It can corrupt your save file and is not supported by the game developers. The intended way is to play through the Forest, which takes about 2–3 hours for most players.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How many levels are in the Forest biome?
A: The Forest biome has 10 regular levels plus one boss level, the Moldy Monarch. You must complete all 11 to unlock the Desert.
Q: Do I need to get 3 stars on every Forest level?
A: No. Stars are optional and only used for bonus content. Completing a level with any score unlocks the next level.
Q: What happens if I lose the boss fight?
A: You can retry the boss as many times as you want. You do not lose any progress, and the boss’s health resets each attempt.
Q: Can I unlock the Desert in co-op mode?
A: Yes, co-op progress counts. If you finish the Forest in a co-op session, the Desert unlocks for both players’ single-player campaigns.
Q: Is there a cheat code to unlock the Desert?
A: No official cheat codes exist. The only way is to complete the Forest biome normally.
