This guide explains how the mutation system works in Plants vs. Brainrots, what each mutation does, and how to pick the right one for your strategy. You enter your plant level and the mutation you want to evaluate, and the calculator below shows the resulting stat changes and cost in mutation points.

Formula

The stat boost percentage is calculated as:

Stat Boost (%) = (Plant Level × 2) + (Mutation Type Value × 3)

The mutation points cost is:

Cost = 20 + (Mutation Type Value × 5)

Where:

  • Plant Level – the current level of your plant (1 to 100).
  • Mutation Type Value – a number assigned to each mutation: Damage = 1, Attack Speed = 2, Health = 3, Cost Reduction = 4, Crit Chance = 5.

All percentages are additive, meaning they stack with other bonuses from upgrades or equipment.

Worked Example

Using the default values (Plant Level = 10, Damage mutation):

  1. Stat Boost = (10 × 2) + (1 × 3) = 20 + 3 = 23%
  2. Cost = 20 + (1 × 5) = 25 mutation points

So a level 10 plant with a Damage mutation gets a 23% damage increase and costs 25 mutation points.

Background: How Mutations Were Introduced

Mutations were added in the major update that expanded the endgame content. Before that, plants could only be upgraded with coins and seeds. The system was designed to give players a way to customize their plants beyond simple leveling, especially for tackling the harder waves in the late game. Each mutation changes a specific stat, and the cost in mutation points increases with the mutation’s strength.

How the Mutation System Works

To apply a mutation, you need to have unlocked the Mutation Lab (available after reaching Zone 15). You select a plant, choose one of the five mutations, and pay the mutation points. The mutation is permanent unless you use a rare item called a Mutagen Reset, which removes all mutations from a plant and refunds 50% of the points spent.

Each plant can hold up to three mutations, but you can only have one mutation of each type per plant. For example, you can have Damage, Attack Speed, and Health, but not two Damage mutations.

Choosing the Right Mutation

Your choice depends on the plant’s role and your strategy:

  • Damage – best for attackers like Peashooters or Repeaters, especially if you lack DPS.
  • Attack Speed – useful for plants that apply status effects (like slows or stuns) because they trigger more often.
  • Health – for tanks or walls that need to survive longer, like Wall-nuts or Tall-nuts.
  • Cost Reduction – helps with economy, making expensive plants cheaper to place.
  • Crit Chance – provides a chance to deal double damage; great for high-damage single-target plants.

A common strategy is to put Damage and Attack Speed on your main damage dealers, Health on your front line, and Cost Reduction on plants you place many times (like Sunflowers). Crit Chance is often paired with high base damage plants for burst potential.

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

One frequent mistake is assuming mutations stack multiplicatively. They do not – all bonuses are additive. So if you have a 20% damage mutation and a 10% damage upgrade from another source, the total is 30%, not 32%.

Another misconception is that higher-level plants benefit more from mutations. Actually, the mutation bonus is flat, so it matters more for lower-level plants. However, higher-level plants have more base stats, so the percentage increase is still valuable.

Players also forget that mutation points are shared across all plants. Spending them all on one plant leaves others weak. It’s usually better to spread mutations among your core team.

Comparing Mutations

Here’s a quick comparison based on typical scenarios:

  • Damage vs. Attack Speed – Damage is better for plants that hit hard but slowly. Attack Speed is better for plants with on-hit effects. In terms of raw DPS, they are roughly equal when the product of damage and speed is the same.
  • Health vs. Cost Reduction – Health helps a plant survive longer, which can be more valuable than saving a few sun points, especially in endless modes. Cost Reduction is better early game when sun is scarce.
  • Crit Chance vs. Damage – Crit Chance gives an average damage increase equal to (Crit Chance × 100)% (since a crit doubles damage). For example, 10% crit chance adds 10% average damage. So it’s similar to a 10% damage mutation, but with more variance.

Costs and Progression

Mutation points are earned by completing daily challenges, defeating boss waves, and dismantling unwanted plants. The cost of a mutation increases with the mutation type value, as shown in the formula. Higher-tier mutations cost more but also give a larger stat boost. There is no way to increase your mutation point cap; it’s fixed at 1000, so plan carefully.

Safety and Fair Play

Mutations are a core game mechanic and are safe to use. However, be aware that some players use third-party tools to modify mutation points, which can lead to a ban. Always play with official updates and avoid any external software that alters game data. The game’s servers track mutation changes, and unusual activity is flagged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I remove a mutation?

Yes, you can use a Mutagen Reset item, which is rare and can be obtained from special events or the shop. It removes all mutations from a plant and refunds 50% of the mutation points spent. You cannot remove a single mutation; it’s all or nothing.

Do mutations affect the plant’s appearance?

No, mutations do not change the plant’s appearance. They are purely stat modifications. Some players wish they did, but the developers have not implemented visual changes for mutations.

What is the best mutation for Sunflowers?

For Sunflowers, Cost Reduction is generally the best because you plant many of them, and saving 25 sun each time adds up quickly. Alternatively, Health can help them survive longer against zombies that target them, but Cost Reduction is more efficient for economy.

Are mutations permanent?

Yes, mutations are permanent until you use a Mutagen Reset. They do not reset when you level up or evolve the plant. The only way to change them is with that reset item.

Can I have the same mutation on multiple plants?

Yes, you can have the same mutation on as many plants as you want, as long as you have enough mutation points. There is no restriction on repeating mutations across different plants.

Does the mutation bonus apply to the plant’s base stats or total stats?

The mutation bonus applies to the plant’s base stats (before any other bonuses like upgrades or equipment). This means that if you have a 20% damage mutation, it adds 20% of the base damage, not 20% of the current total damage. This is important to know when stacking multiple bonuses.
