Pokémon GO Eevee Evolution Guide: Names, Methods & Tips

Card No. 06·26077 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

To evolve Eevee in Pokémon GO, spend 25 Eevee Candy and either use a one-time nickname trick or meet the requirements for the evolution you want. The nickname trick guarantees one specific result once per account; after that, use the evolution’s normal conditions and check the evolve button before spending your Candy.

Which Eevee Evolutions Are Available?

Eevee has eight possible evolutions in Pokémon GO: Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon and Sylveon. Every evolution costs 25 Eevee Candy, but the method differs. The original three are random when evolved normally; the other five have identifiable requirements.

  • Vaporeon: Water type; a normal evolution can produce it at random.
  • Jolteon: Electric type; a normal evolution can produce it at random.
  • Flareon: Fire type; a normal evolution can produce it at random.
  • Espeon: Psychic type; make Eevee your Buddy, walk 10 km with it, then evolve it during the day while it is still your Buddy.
  • Umbreon: Dark type; make Eevee your Buddy, walk 10 km with it, then evolve it at night while it is still your Buddy.
  • Leafeon: Grass type; evolve within range of an active Mossy Lure Module at a PokéStop.
  • Glaceon: Ice type; evolve within range of an active Glacial Lure Module at a PokéStop.
  • Sylveon: Fairy type; earn 70 hearts with Eevee as your Buddy, then evolve it while it remains your Buddy.

Use the Nickname Trick Once

You can set an Eevee’s nickname to a specific name to force its evolution. Each name trick works only once per account for its corresponding evolution, so it is best saved for a result you particularly want or cannot conveniently obtain through the standard method.

  • Vaporeon: Rainer
  • Jolteon: Sparky
  • Flareon: Pyro
  • Espeon: Sakura
  • Umbreon: Tamao
  • Leafeon: Linnea
  • Glaceon: Rea
  • Sylveon: Kira

Rename Eevee before evolving, and confirm that the evolution preview shows the Pokémon you expect. If the button still displays a question mark, do not evolve: the name may have been entered incorrectly, or the one-time trick may already have been used on your account. Nicknames can be changed again after the evolution.

How to Get Espeon or Umbreon

For either evolution, first set the Eevee you want to evolve as your Buddy. Walk 10 km with it and earn the required Buddy progress, then keep it assigned as your Buddy when you evolve. Espeon requires daytime; Umbreon requires nighttime as shown in the game. The evolution screen should display the intended Pokémon rather than a question mark before you confirm.

  1. Open Eevee’s Pokémon page and choose the Buddy option.
  2. Walk with it until the game records 10 km of Buddy distance.
  3. Check that the distance requirement is recognized and that Eevee is still your current Buddy.
  4. Evolve during daytime for Espeon or nighttime for Umbreon, after checking the preview.

Distance tracking can take time to update, and simply having walked 10 km with an Eevee in the past is not enough if the relevant Buddy condition is not met for the Eevee being evolved. If you have concerns, wait for the game’s progress to update and verify the preview rather than relying on memory.

How to Get Leafeon or Glaceon

Leafeon and Glaceon require special Lure Modules at a PokéStop. A Mossy Lure is needed for Leafeon; a Glacial Lure is needed for Glaceon. Be close enough to the lured PokéStop for its effect to apply, select the Eevee, and check that the evolve preview shows the desired form. The lure does not remove the 25-Candy cost.

A lure’s effect is not the same as changing Eevee’s nickname. If the correct evolution is not shown, check that the right lure is active and that you are within its range. Avoid confirming while the preview is uncertain.

How to Get Sylveon

Sylveon requires 70 Buddy hearts with Eevee. Assign the Eevee as your Buddy and build its heart total through available Buddy activities; the game displays progress on the Buddy screen. Once the requirement is met, keep that Eevee as your Buddy and inspect its evolution preview. The cost remains 25 Eevee Candy.

Hearts are not the same as walking distance: the 70-heart requirement is separate from the 10 km condition for Espeon and Umbreon. If you are planning several evolutions, track progress for each individual Eevee rather than assuming one Buddy’s hearts or distance apply to another.

Choosing an Eevee and Avoiding Mistakes

Before evolving, consider the role you want the Pokémon to fill, its individual stats, and whether you are completing a Pokédex entry or building a battle team. Evolution does not make every Eevee equally useful: the resulting Pokémon’s value depends on its stats, moves, the activity you plan to use it for, and game balance. A high Combat Power number alone does not guarantee that it is your best choice.

  • Check the evolution preview first. A question mark means the result is not confirmed.
  • For Espeon and Umbreon, verify Buddy status, recorded distance and the time of day.
  • For Leafeon and Glaceon, confirm the correct active lure and proximity to its PokéStop.
  • For Sylveon, check the heart requirement on the correct Eevee.
  • Remember that the Rainer, Sparky, Pyro, Sakura, Tamao, Linnea, Rea and Kira tricks are each one-time account uses.
  • Keep enough Candy for your intended evolution; all eight cost 25 Eevee Candy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Eevee Candy does an evolution cost?
Each of Eevee’s eight evolutions costs 25 Eevee Candy. Special conditions such as walking, Buddy hearts or a lure do not replace that cost.

Can I choose Vaporeon, Jolteon or Flareon without a nickname?
Not reliably. Without the one-time nickname trick, a standard Eevee evolution can become Vaporeon, Jolteon or Flareon at random.

Do the Eevee nickname tricks work more than once?
No. Each nickname trick guarantees its matching evolution only once per account. Check the preview; if it does not show the expected form, do not spend Candy.

Why does my Eevee show a question mark instead of an evolution?
A question mark means the result is not guaranteed by the conditions currently recognized. Recheck the Buddy requirement, time, lure or one-time nickname use before proceeding.

Does walking 10 km unlock both Espeon and Umbreon?
The distance is part of the requirement for both, but the evolution depends on the time of day: daytime for Espeon and nighttime for Umbreon. Keep the Eevee as your Buddy and verify the preview.

Can I get Sylveon by walking 10 km?
No. Sylveon uses a separate requirement: earn 70 Buddy hearts with that Eevee, then evolve it while it is your Buddy.
