Pokémon GO Eggs Not Hatching? Fix Distance and Sync

Card No. 06·24471 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

If a Pokémon GO Egg is not hatching, first check that it has recorded enough walking distance and that the game is receiving movement data. Put the Egg in an incubator, enable Adventure Sync if you want distance counted while the app is closed, then check the Egg’s progress and troubleshoot location, permissions, and syncing.

How Egg hatching works

An Egg does not hatch simply because time has passed or your Trainer has moved around. It needs to be placed in an incubator, and the game must register the required distance for that Egg. The distance requirement is shown on the Egg in your inventory; it varies by Egg type and can also be affected by an event or other in-game bonus.

There are two basic ways to record progress: travel while Pokémon GO is open, or allow Adventure Sync to report eligible distance when the game is closed. Adventure Sync uses the connected health and activity platform on your device. It is not a guarantee that every step or every form of movement will count: the game may not receive a reliable distance update, and movement that is too fast may not qualify.

Distance is associated with the incubated Egg. If several Eggs are incubating, each can gain progress at the same time, subject to the incubators in use. A regular incubator is reusable but has limited uses before it breaks; special incubators may have a limited number of uses. Check the item description and remaining uses rather than assuming an incubator is permanent.

Check these settings first

Before changing anything, open the Eggs screen and look at the distance remaining. If the number has decreased, the Egg is tracking; it simply has not reached its requirement yet. If it has not moved after a walk, check the following:

  • Incubator: Confirm the Egg is actually in an incubator. Eggs in storage do not hatch from walking.
  • Adventure Sync: In Pokémon GO settings, make sure Adventure Sync is enabled if you expect distance to count while the app is closed. Follow any prompts to connect the device’s health or activity service.
  • App permissions: Check your phone’s settings for Pokémon GO’s location permission and, where applicable, permission to access motion or health activity data. Menu labels differ between operating systems and versions.
  • Connection and updates: Use a stable internet connection when opening the game, and install available app updates. A delayed sync can make progress appear later than the walk itself.

When testing, avoid rapidly switching between the game and other apps. Close Pokémon GO normally, take a walk at an ordinary pace, then reopen it and allow time for the activity data to sync. If you keep the game open, check the distance display after moving rather than relying only on the phone’s step counter.

Why distance may not count

Movement speed and GPS accuracy: Pokémon GO does not treat every kind of travel as walking distance. Fast travel, such as driving, may not count reliably, and using the game while driving is unsafe. GPS drift can also make your on-screen position jump, stop, or trace an unrealistic path. Buildings, weak signals, and battery-saving settings can affect location readings.

Adventure Sync has not updated: Background activity can be delayed, especially if the app was force-closed, the phone restricted background activity, or the connected health service did not record the walk. Open the game while online and give it a little time to update. Check whether the phone’s health or activity app recorded the walk; if it did not, Pokémon GO may have nothing to import.

Permissions or account state changed: A system update, reinstall, or permission change can disable location or activity access. Review the permissions again rather than assuming they remain enabled. Make sure you are signed into the intended game account; progress recorded on a different account will not appear on the one you are checking.

Progress is being rounded or displayed differently: The Egg screen may show distance in rounded units, so a small amount of progress might not visibly change the displayed number. Compare the remaining distance before and after a longer walk. Do not expect the phone’s step total to match the in-game distance exactly: Pokémon GO tracks distance using its own systems and eligibility rules.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

  1. Open the Egg screen and confirm the Egg is incubating. Note its remaining distance.
  2. Check Pokémon GO’s location permission and enable Adventure Sync if you need background tracking. Check related activity permissions too.
  3. Confirm that your phone’s health or activity app is recording movement, if Adventure Sync uses it on your device.
  4. Walk at a normal pace in an area with a reasonable location signal. Do not test while driving or in another unsafe situation.
  5. Reconnect to the internet, open Pokémon GO, and wait for it to update. Recheck the Egg’s distance.
  6. If progress still does not register, restart the app and phone, check for updates, and review the game’s current help guidance or contact in-game support.

Restarting will not create distance that was never recorded, so treat it as a way to clear a temporary sync or app issue, not as a hatch shortcut. Avoid repeatedly reinstalling before checking account sign-in and permissions. If you do reinstall, ensure you know how to sign back into the correct account.

Incubators, bonuses, and common misconceptions

Using an incubator is required, but buying or using more incubators does not make one Egg’s distance requirement disappear. It lets you work on additional Eggs at once. The infinite-use incubator and limited-use incubators differ in how many times they can be used; the game displays an incubator’s remaining uses.

Distance bonuses can reduce the distance needed during certain events or under specific game conditions. Check the event announcement and the Egg’s displayed requirement rather than relying on an old guide: requirements and bonuses can change. The number shown in the current game is the practical reference for that Egg.

Another misconception is that every phone step automatically counts. Step count and Pokémon GO distance are related but not interchangeable. The game needs eligible distance data, and Adventure Sync may depend on a compatible activity source and permissions. Likewise, leaving the game open does not guarantee progress if location services are inaccurate or movement is not being accepted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Pokémon GO Eggs hatch when the app is closed?
They can gain distance while the app is closed if Adventure Sync is enabled and the game receives eligible activity data. Check the required permissions and connected health or activity service.

Why is my Egg distance not changing after walking?
Confirm the Egg is in an incubator, then check location and Adventure Sync permissions, internet access, and whether your phone recorded the activity. Give the game time to sync and compare progress after a longer walk.

Does driving count toward Egg hatching?
Fast travel is not a reliable way to earn Egg distance, and the game may reject it. Do not use Pokémon GO while driving; walk only where it is safe and permitted.

Can I hatch an Egg without an incubator?
No. An Egg must be placed in an incubator before its distance can count toward hatching.

Why did Adventure Sync stop working?
Common causes include disabled permissions, background restrictions, an unrecorded activity session, or a delayed connection to the phone’s health service. Recheck those settings and reopen the game online.

Will reinstalling Pokémon GO fix Egg tracking?
It may help with a persistent app problem, but it will not restore distance that was not recorded. Check account access and permissions first; after reinstalling, sign into the correct account and enable tracking again.
