Pokemon Go Team Go Rocket Takeover Event Guide

Card No. 06·55354 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

The Team Go Rocket Takeover is a recurring special event in Pokémon GO during which Team GO Rocket’s presence increases dramatically: more Grunts appear at PokéStops and in balloons, Team Leaders appear more often, and the team’s boss, Giovanni, returns with a new Legendary Pokémon. During the event, you can complete Special Research to earn a Super Rocket Radar, battle Giovanni, and rescue the Shadow Legendary he is holding. This guide explains how the takeover works, how to prepare, and how to make the most of the event.

What Is a Team Go Rocket Takeover?

A Team GO Rocket Takeover is a limited-time event in Pokémon GO, usually lasting two to four days, that focuses on the villainous Team GO Rocket. During these events, the number of Team GO Rocket Grunts at PokéStops and in balloons increases, and the frequency of encounters with Team GO Rocket Leaders—Cliff, Sierra, and Arlo—also rises. The main draw is the return of Giovanni, the team’s boss, who appears with a new Shadow Legendary Pokémon after you defeat the three Leaders and use a Super Rocket Radar.

Takeovers typically happen two to four times a year, often tied to major game updates or seasonal storylines. They are distinct from regular Team GO Rocket activity, which is always present but at a lower intensity.

How the Takeover Event Works

The event follows a structured progression:

  • Step 1 – Defeat Grunts: Battle Team GO Rocket Grunts at PokéStops or in balloons. Each win gives you a Mysterious Component. Collect six to assemble a Rocket Radar, which reveals the hideouts of the three Leaders.
  • Step 2 – Battle Leaders: Use the Rocket Radar to locate and battle Cliff, Sierra, or Arlo. Defeating a Leader earns you a specific Shadow Pokémon (they rotate each takeover) and a chance at a 12km Egg.
  • Step 3 – Get the Super Rocket Radar: During the takeover, a Special Research quest (e.g., “A Shadowy Disturbance” or “The Shadowy Threat Grows”) rewards you with a Super Rocket Radar. This radar is needed to find Giovanni’s hideout.
  • Step 4 – Defeat Giovanni: Use the Super Rocket Radar to locate Giovanni at a PokéStop or in a balloon. Beat him to catch his current Shadow Legendary (such as Shadow Mewtwo, Shadow Ho-Oh, or Shadow Kyogre).

You can only hold one Super Rocket Radar at a time, but you can keep it after the event ends to use later. However, the Special Research is only available during the takeover, so if you miss it, you must wait for the next one.

How to Prepare for a Takeover

To succeed, prepare before the event starts:

  • Stock up on Potions and Revives: You will battle many Grunts, Leaders, and Giovanni. Carry at least 50 Hyper Potions and 30 Max Revives.
  • Choose the right counters: Shadow Pokémon are stronger but take more damage. Use Pokémon with type advantages. For Giovanni, his lineup always includes Persian, then a type-specific Pokémon (often a Normal, Water, or Ground type), and finally his Shadow Legendary.
  • Save your Super Rocket Radar: If you have one from a previous event, you can use it to battle Giovanni again during the takeover, but you will not get a second one from the same Special Research.
  • Check your bag space: You will receive many items from battles and research. Clear space for Poké Balls, Berries, and TMs.
  • Plan your play time: Takeovers are short, so set aside a few hours to complete the research and battle Giovanni.

Common Problems and Solutions

Players often encounter these issues during takeovers:

  • Can’t find Giovanni: The Super Rocket Radar shows a hideout on the map, but it may appear as a normal PokéStop with a black “R” icon. If you don’t see it, restart the app or walk to a different area. Balloons can also bring Giovanni to you.
  • Giovanni is too hard: His Persian often has a fast attack that hits hard. Use a Fighting-type Pokémon with Counter and Dynamic Punch, such as Lucario or Machamp. For the second slot, use a Pokémon that resists his type-specific Pokémon, and for the third, use a strong counter to the Shadow Legendary.
  • Shadow Legendary flees: Use Golden Razz Berries and aim for Excellent throws. If it flees, you can re-encounter it by re-entering the battle (if you have another Super Rocket Radar) or by completing the research again on a second device (not recommended).
  • Research not appearing: The Special Research is usually granted automatically when the event starts. If not, restart the game or check the Today tab.

Takeover vs. Regular Team GO Rocket

The key differences between a takeover and regular Rocket activity are:

  • Frequency: During a takeover, Grunts appear at nearly every PokéStop and balloons spawn more often (every 15 minutes instead of every 30).
  • Leaders: Leaders appear more frequently, and their Shadow Pokémon are different from the regular rotation.
  • Giovanni: He is only available during takeovers (or if you have a Super Rocket Radar from a past event).
  • Special Research: Takeovers always come with a timed or permanent Special Research that rewards a Super Rocket Radar.

Costs and Rewards

The event is free to play, but there are some costs:

  • Items: You will spend Potions, Revives, and Poké Balls. These can be obtained from PokéStops and Gifts.
  • Time: A full takeover can take 3-6 hours of active play to complete all steps.
  • Incubators: You will get 12km Eggs from Leaders, which require regular or super incubators to hatch. These are not required for the main quest.

Rewards include:

  • Shadow Legendary: The main prize, which is powerful in both PvE and PvP.
  • Stardust and Candy: Battles and catching Shadow Pokémon give extra Stardust.
  • Items: You receive TMs, Berries, and sometimes Rare Candies from research.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do Team Go Rocket Takeovers happen?

Takeovers typically occur every 2-4 months, often tied to new Shadow Legendary releases or seasonal events. Niantic announces them in the in-game news and on social media.

Can I keep the Super Rocket Radar after the event?

Yes, you can keep it indefinitely. You can use it to battle Giovanni even after the event ends, but you won’t get a new one until the next takeover’s Special Research.

What is the best Pokémon to use against Giovanni?

It depends on his lineup, but a strong Fighting-type like Lucario or Machamp is essential for his Persian. For the second slot, use a Pokémon that resists his middle Pokémon (often Normal, Water, or Ground). For the final slot, use a counter to the Shadow Legendary, such as a strong Electric-type for Shadow Kyogre or a Dark-type for Shadow Mewtwo.

Can I battle Giovanni more than once during a takeover?

Yes, if you have multiple Super Rocket Radars (from previous events) or if you complete the Special Research on multiple accounts (not recommended). Normally, you get only one Super Rocket Radar per event, so you can battle Giovanni only once.

Do Shadow Pokémon from takeovers have better stats?

Shadow Pokémon have a 20% attack boost and a 20% defense penalty compared to normal Pokémon. They are stronger in raids and PvP, but they cost more Stardust and Candy to power up. The IVs (individual values) are random, so you may need to catch multiple to get a good one.

What happens if I miss the Special Research?

If you don’t log in during the takeover, you miss that particular Special Research. However, sometimes Niantic re-releases older research during future events, but it’s not guaranteed. Always check the in-game news.
