Presence Sensor on Nest Hub: How It Works

Card No. 06·51385 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

The Nest Hub’s presence sensor uses radar to detect if someone is in the room, letting the display show useful info when you’re near and dim when you’re not. You can control it through the Google Home app’s Privacy settings, and it works with routines to trigger automations. Here’s a full breakdown of what the sensor does, how it works, and how to manage it.

What Is the Presence Sensor?

The presence sensor is a built-in radar chip (Soli) that detects motion and proximity. Unlike a camera, it doesn’t capture images—it senses movement patterns. The second-generation Nest Hub (2021) and the Nest Hub Max include this feature, but the original Nest Hub (2019) does not. The sensor is used for two main things: Quick Gestures (wave to pause/play media) and presence sensing (wake the display when you approach, show a clock when you leave).

How the Radar Sensor Works

The Soli radar emits low-power electromagnetic waves and measures reflections off objects. It can distinguish between a person and a pet by analyzing micro-movements like breathing. The sensor has a range of about 5–6 meters (16–20 feet) and works in the dark. It doesn’t record or store raw radar data—only the processed detection result (e.g., “person present”) is used locally.

Privacy and Data Handling

All presence detection happens on the device itself. Google states that radar data never leaves the Nest Hub. The only information sent to Google servers is the binary result (present/absent) when you enable “Presence sensing” for routines. You can turn off the sensor entirely in the Google Home app: Device settings → Recognition & presence → Presence sensing. Quick Gestures can be disabled separately. There’s no camera involved, and the sensor doesn’t identify who you are—just that someone is there.

How to Enable or Disable Presence Sensing

  1. Open the Google Home app on your phone.
  2. Tap your Nest Hub device.
  3. Tap the gear icon (Settings) in the top right.
  4. Select Recognition & presence.
  5. Toggle Presence sensing on or off.
  6. For Quick Gestures, go to Gestures in the same menu.

If you don’t see these options, make sure your device firmware is up to date. The original Nest Hub lacks the radar chip, so it won’t have these settings.

Using Presence for Automations

When presence sensing is enabled, you can use it as a trigger in Google Home routines. For example:

  • Turn on lights when you enter the room.
  • Start playing your favorite playlist when you sit down.
  • Adjust the thermostat based on room occupancy.
  • Show a custom greeting when you approach.

To set this up, go to the Google Home app → Automations → Add. Choose the Nest Hub as the trigger and select “Presence” as the condition. Then pick the action (e.g., “Turn on lights”). Note that routines require the hub to be plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi.

Common Issues and Troubleshooting

If the sensor doesn’t seem to work, check the following:

  • Placement: The sensor works best when the hub is at least 1 meter off the ground and not blocked by objects.
  • Distance: The radar range is about 5–6 meters. If you’re farther away, it may not detect you.
  • Interference: Other radar-emitting devices (like some smart appliances) can cause false positives. Move the hub away.
  • Privacy settings: Ensure presence sensing is enabled in the app.
  • Pet detection: The sensor is tuned to ignore pets, but large dogs moving quickly might trigger it occasionally.

If issues persist, restart the hub by unplugging it for 10 seconds.

Comparison: Nest Hub vs. Nest Hub Max

Both the Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Hub Max have the Soli radar. The original Nest Hub (1st gen) does not. The Max also has a camera for video calls and Nest Cam features, but the presence sensor works independently of the camera. The Max’s radar has the same range and capabilities. If you have a 1st gen Hub, you can’t add presence sensing—you’d need to upgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the presence sensor work in the dark?

Yes, radar doesn’t rely on light, so it works perfectly in pitch-black rooms. This is why it’s used for the “ambient clock” feature that dims at night but wakes when you approach.

Can the sensor detect multiple people?

It can detect that there is at least one person, but it doesn’t count individuals. It’s not designed to distinguish between two people standing together.

Will the sensor work if the hub is on a shelf?

It should work as long as the shelf is at a reasonable height (waist level or higher) and not enclosed. Avoid placing it behind thick glass or metal.

Does presence sensing use a lot of power?

No, the radar chip is designed to be low-power. The Nest Hub is always plugged in, so it doesn’t affect battery life. It does consume a small amount of electricity, but it’s negligible compared to the display.

Can I use presence sensing with other Google devices?

Yes, you can use the presence status in routines that control other smart home devices, like lights, thermostats, or speakers. The hub itself acts as the sensor.

Is there a way to see if the sensor is active?

When presence is detected, the display will show the “Now Playing” or home screen. If you have the “Ambient” setting, the screen will brighten. There’s no icon indicating detection, but you can test by walking away and seeing if the screen dims.
