Reliance Jio Fiber Home Service: Plans, Setup & FAQs

Card No. 06·9766 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Reliance Jio Fiber is a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband service that delivers high-speed internet, landline, and OTT entertainment through a single connection. You get speeds from 30 Mbps to 1 Gbps, a Wi-Fi router, and a set-top box (Jio Set Top Box) for TV channels and streaming apps. This article explains how Jio Fiber works, what plans cost, how installation happens, and answers common questions about the service.

What Is Jio Fiber and How Does It Work?

Jio Fiber uses optical fiber cables laid directly to your home, replacing traditional copper or coaxial lines. The fiber terminates at an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) that Jio provides, which acts as a modem and Wi-Fi router. The service is delivered over Jio’s own fiber backbone, and it supports both IPv4 and IPv6. Unlike mobile broadband, Jio Fiber offers symmetrical upload and download speeds on most plans, meaning your upload speed is the same as your download speed.

The connection includes a Jio Home Gateway (the router) and, on many plans, a Jio Set Top Box that connects to your TV. The set-top box runs on Android TV and gives access to live TV channels, OTT apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar (depending on the plan), and voice search via the Jio Remote. The landline service (JioPhone) plugs into the router and works like a normal home phone, with unlimited calls to any Indian number on most plans.

Jio Fiber Plans and Pricing (2024)

Jio Fiber plans are divided into two main categories: Jio Fiber (standard plans) and Jio Fiber Plus (higher-speed, premium plans). All plans are postpaid – you pay monthly after using the service. Here are the typical plans as of 2024 (prices may vary slightly by region):

  • Jio Fiber Basic – ₹399/month: 30 Mbps speed, 100 GB data, no set-top box, no OTT apps.
  • Jio Fiber Standard – ₹699/month: 100 Mbps, 300 GB data, set-top box, 16 OTT apps (Netflix, Prime, Hotstar, etc.).
  • Jio Fiber Premium – ₹999/month: 300 Mbps, 500 GB data, set-top box, all 16 OTT apps, plus JioCloud and JioSecurity.
  • Jio Fiber Ultra – ₹1,499/month: 500 Mbps, 1 TB data, set-top box, all OTT apps.
  • Jio Fiber Gigabit – ₹2,499/month: 1 Gbps, 2 TB data, set-top box, all OTT apps.

All plans include unlimited Jio-to-Jio calls and 1,000 minutes to other networks per month. After your data limit is exhausted, speed drops to 1 Mbps (unlimited) – you can still browse, but video streaming will buffer. Jio also offers a Jio Fiber Plus series with higher data limits (up to 3 TB) and faster speeds (up to 1 Gbps), priced between ₹1,499 and ₹8,499.

How to Check Jio Fiber Availability and Apply

Jio Fiber is available in most Indian cities and towns, but coverage is not universal. Before applying, check availability:

  1. Visit the official Jio website (jio.com) or open the MyJio app.
  2. Enter your pincode or address in the “Check Availability tool.
  3. If available, you’ll see a list of plans and a “Get Jio Fiber button.
  4. Fill in your name, address, and contact details. Jio will schedule a site survey.
  5. After survey, a technician installs the fiber, router, and set-top box (if included).

Installation is usually free, but you may need to pay a security deposit (refundable) of ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 depending on the plan. The router and set-top box are provided on rent – you don’t pay upfront for them, but they remain Jio’s property. If you cancel, you must return them.

Setting Up Jio Fiber at Home

Once the fiber is installed, the technician configures the router and set-top box. You’ll receive a Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password printed on the router. You can change them via the Jio Home app or the router’s web interface (usually at 192.168.29.1). The set-top box connects to the same Wi-Fi or via Ethernet cable and is linked to your Jio account using the phone number you provided.

To activate the service, you need to:

  • Keep the router powered on and connected to the fiber cable.
  • Connect the set-top box to your TV via HDMI.
  • Log in to the MyJio app with your Jio number to manage your account, view bills, and add OTT subscriptions.

If you face any issue during setup, Jio’s customer support (1991 from Jio number) can guide you, or you can raise a service request on the MyJio app.

Common Problems and Troubleshooting

Like any broadband service, Jio Fiber can face occasional issues. Here are the most common ones and how to fix them:

  • Slow internet speed – Check if you’ve exhausted your data limit (speed drops to 1 Mbps). Also, restart the router by unplugging for 30 seconds. If still slow, run a speed test via the Jio Home app.
  • Wi-Fi not connecting – Ensure the router is on and the Wi-Fi light is green. Forget the network on your device and reconnect with the correct password. If the password was changed, reset the router to factory settings (press the reset button for 10 seconds).
  • Set-top box not streaming – Check internet connection on the box, restart the box, and ensure your OTT subscriptions are active. Sometimes the box needs a software update – go to Settings > About > System update.
  • No internet at all – Check if the fiber cable is damaged or disconnected. Look at the router’s PON (optical) light – it should be solid. If it’s red or blinking, the fiber link is down, and you need to call support.

For persistent issues, Jio offers a “JioFiber Help section in the MyJio app where you can raise a ticket. Most issues are resolved remotely within a few hours.

Jio Fiber vs. Other Broadband Providers

Jio Fiber competes with Airtel Xstream Fiber, BSNL FTTH, and local cable operators. Here’s how it compares:

  • Pricing – Jio Fiber’s ₹399 plan is cheaper than Airtel’s entry plan (₹499) and BSNL’s (₹299 but with lower speed). However, BSNL offers truly unlimited data on some plans, while Jio has a data cap.
  • Speed – Jio offers symmetrical speeds up to 1 Gbps, similar to Airtel. BSNL’s top speed is 300 Mbps.
  • Bundled benefits – Jio includes a set-top box and OTT apps on most plans, which Airtel also does (but with fewer apps). BSNL doesn’t provide a set-top box.
  • Customer support – Jio and Airtel have robust support, while BSNL is often slower.

If you want the cheapest plan with decent speed, Jio Fiber is a good choice. If you need unlimited data without speed throttling, BSNL might be better. For premium features and reliability, Airtel and Jio are comparable.

Costs and Hidden Charges

Apart from the monthly rental, there are a few other costs to be aware of:

  • Security deposit – Refundable, ranges from ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 depending on plan.
  • Installation fee – Usually free, but some areas may charge a one-time fee of ₹500–₹1,000.
  • Router and set-top box rental – Included in the monthly plan, but you must return them if you cancel. If damaged, you may be charged.
  • Taxes – GST (18%) is added to the plan price. So, a ₹699 plan costs about ₹825 per month.
  • OTTs – Some plans include OTT subscriptions, but if you want extra apps, you can add them at an additional cost via the MyJio app.

There are no cancellation charges if you discontinue after the minimum lock-in period (usually 3 months). After that, you can cancel anytime by giving a 30-day notice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Jio Fiber truly unlimited?

No. All Jio Fiber plans have a data cap (e.g., 100 GB to 2 TB). After you exceed the cap, your speed drops to 1 Mbps, which is enough for basic browsing and messaging but not for HD video streaming. Jio calls this “unlimited because you never get disconnected, but the speed is heavily reduced.

Can I use my own router with Jio Fiber?

Technically, you can connect your own router to the Jio router via Ethernet and use it as a secondary access point. However, the Jio router is required for the service to work – you cannot replace it entirely. The Jio router handles the fiber connection and authentication, so it must stay in the loop.

How do I check my Jio Fiber data usage?

Open the MyJio app and go to the “Broadband section. You’ll see your daily and monthly data usage, along with the remaining balance. You can also set alerts to notify you when you’ve used a certain percentage.

What is the minimum speed I need for streaming 4K?

For 4K streaming on Netflix or YouTube, you need at least 25 Mbps. Jio Fiber’s basic plan (30 Mbps) is sufficient for a single 4K stream, but if multiple devices are used simultaneously, a higher plan (100 Mbps or more) is recommended.

Does Jio Fiber work during power cuts?

No. The router and set-top box require electricity. Jio does not provide a battery backup, so during a power outage, you’ll lose internet and TV. You can connect the router to a UPS or inverter to keep it running.

Can I shift my Jio Fiber connection to a new address?

Yes, Jio allows relocation of your connection within the same city or to another city where Jio Fiber is available. You need to raise a request in the MyJio app or call customer care. A technician will visit the new address to install the service, and there may be a relocation fee of around ₹500.
