Remove Account Picture Mac: 3 Ways

Card No. 06·12170 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

To remove your account picture on a Mac, you can either delete it entirely (reverting to the default gray silhouette) or replace it with a blank or custom image. The exact steps depend on whether you are changing your Apple ID profile photo (used for iCloud and Apple services) or your local Mac user account picture (shown at login). This guide covers both, with the simplest methods for current versions of macOS.

Understanding the Two Account Pictures

Macs have two separate profile pictures that often get confused:

  • Apple ID photo: This is the image associated with your Apple ID. It appears in Mail, Messages, FaceTime, and other Apple services. It is synced across all your devices via iCloud.
  • Local user account picture: This is the image shown on the login screen and in System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS). It is stored locally on your Mac and can be different from your Apple ID photo.

Removing one does not automatically remove the other. If you want your Mac login screen to show no picture at all, you must change the local account picture. If you want your email and messaging apps to show no photo, you must remove the Apple ID photo.

Method 1: Remove the Local Mac Account Picture

This is the most common request. To remove the picture that appears at login and in the user profile:

  1. Open System Settings (macOS Ventura and later) or System Preferences (macOS Monterey and earlier).
  2. Click Users & Groups (in System Settings, it may be under “Users & Groups” in the sidebar).
  3. Find your user account in the list and hover over the circular profile picture.
  4. Click the Edit button (a pencil icon or “Edit…” text) that appears.
  5. In the photo picker, choose Default or Suggestions – the exact label varies. Select the plain gray silhouette (the default icon).
  6. Click Done or Save.

This does not delete the image file from your disk; it just stops using it as the account picture. If you want a completely blank or transparent image, you can instead choose a solid-color image from the Photos library or drag a blank PNG file onto the profile picture.

Method 2: Remove the Apple ID Profile Photo

To remove the photo that appears across Apple services:

  1. Open System Settings (or System Preferences).
  2. Click your name (Apple ID) at the top of the sidebar.
  3. Click iCloud in the sidebar, then click Account Details (or just look for the profile picture at the top).
  4. Hover over the profile picture and click Edit.
  5. Choose Default (the gray silhouette) or Take Photo if you want to use a blank image.
  6. Click Done.

This change syncs to all devices signed in with the same Apple ID. If you want to remove it entirely, Apple does not offer a “no photo” option – the gray silhouette is the closest you can get.

Method 3: Use a Blank or Transparent Image

If you want the login screen to show no picture at all (just empty space), you can create a transparent or solid-color PNG and set it as the account picture.

  1. Open Preview on your Mac.
  2. Go to File > New from Clipboard (if you copied a blank image) or create a new document with a solid color.
  3. To make a transparent PNG: use an app like Preview or a free online tool to create a 512×512 pixel image with a transparent background. Save it as blank.png.
  4. In System Settings > Users & Groups, click Edit on your profile picture.
  5. Drag the blank.png file onto the circular picture area.
  6. Click Done.

Note: macOS may still display a thin border or shadow around the picture area, but the image itself will be invisible.

Common Problems and Fixes

  • Picture won’t change: If the edit button is grayed out, you may be logged in as a standard user without admin rights. Log in as an administrator or ask the admin to change it.
  • Apple ID photo keeps coming back: This happens because iCloud syncs the photo from another device. Change the Apple ID photo on your Mac, then check your iPhone/iPad under Settings > Apple ID > Name, Photo, Contact Info.
  • Login screen still shows old picture: Sometimes the login window caches the image. Log out and back in, or restart your Mac.
  • File is too large or wrong format: macOS accepts JPG, PNG, HEIC, and GIF (static). If the image fails, convert it to PNG using Preview (File > Export > PNG).
  • Default silhouette is not showing: On newer macOS versions, the default is a colorful monogram (your initials). To get the gray silhouette, you may need to select “Default” from the Suggestions section, not just the monogram.

Comparison: Apple ID Photo vs. Local Account Picture

Aspect Apple ID Photo Local Account Picture
Where it appears Mail, Messages, FaceTime, iCloud.com Login screen, System Settings user list
Sync Yes, via iCloud across devices No, only on this Mac
How to remove Edit in Apple ID settings Edit in Users & Groups
Effect of removal Gray silhouette across all Apple services Gray silhouette on this Mac only

If you change the local picture but keep the Apple ID photo, your Mac login screen will show the local picture, while apps like Mail will show the Apple ID photo. Many users prefer to set both to the same image to avoid confusion.

Safety and Privacy Considerations

Your account picture is visible to anyone who sees your login screen or receives messages from you. If you are using a shared Mac or you are concerned about privacy, removing the picture is a reasonable step. However, note that:

  • The gray silhouette is still an image – it does not reveal any personal data.
  • If you use a custom photo, it may be embedded in the user account metadata and could be recoverable by someone with administrative access.
  • Changing your Apple ID photo affects all devices, so think before you remove it if you rely on visual identification in FaceTime or Messages.

There is no security risk in removing the picture; it does not affect your password or account protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I completely delete the account picture file?

No, macOS does not allow you to delete the account picture entirely. The system always needs an image to display in the circular frame. The best you can do is set it to the default gray silhouette or a transparent PNG.

Why does my Mac show my initials instead of a picture?

Newer macOS versions automatically generate a monogram (your initials) as a placeholder when no photo is set. To get the classic gray silhouette, go to Users & Groups, edit the picture, and select the “Default” option under Suggestions – it may be labeled “Default” or show a generic person icon.

Will removing my Apple ID photo remove it from my iPhone?

Yes, because the Apple ID photo syncs via iCloud. If you remove it on your Mac, it will also be removed on your iPhone and other Apple devices. To keep a photo on your iPhone but not on your Mac, you would need to use a different Apple ID on each device, which is not recommended.

I don’t see an Edit button on my profile picture. What’s wrong?

This usually means you are not logged in as an administrator. Standard users cannot change their own account picture in some macOS versions. Log in as an admin, or ask the admin to change it for you.

Can I use a blank image to make the login screen look empty?

Yes, you can create a transparent PNG and set it as the account picture. However, macOS may still show a faint outline or shadow around the circle. This is a cosmetic limitation of the login window.

Does removing the account picture affect my password or security?

No, the account picture is purely cosmetic. It has no effect on your password, FileVault encryption, or any security settings. Removing it does not make your Mac more or less secure.
