Remove Name Menu Bar Mac: 3 Ways to Hide It

Card No. 06·15275 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

To remove your name from the menu bar on a Mac, you need to disable the Fast User Switching menu, which is the only place your full account name appears by default. You can do this in System Settings > Control Center > Fast User Switching and set it to “Don’t Show in Menu Bar.” This article explains that method plus two other ways to hide your name, and what to do if your name still appears.

Why Your Name Appears in the Menu Bar

The name you see on the right side of the macOS menu bar is part of the Fast User Switching feature. When enabled, it displays the currently logged-in user’s name and profile picture. This is a convenience for quickly switching between user accounts without logging out. However, many people prefer to hide it for privacy, to reduce clutter, or because they simply don’t like the way it looks. The name is not part of the main menu bar by design; it is added specifically by the Fast User Switching control.

Method 1: Turn Off Fast User Switching (The Standard Fix)

This is the method that works for the vast majority of Macs running macOS Ventura or later. It removes the name and the profile picture from the menu bar entirely.

  1. Open System Settings (Apple menu > System Settings).
  2. Click Control Center in the sidebar.
  3. Scroll down to the Fast User Switching section.
  4. Click the dropdown next to “Show in Menu Bar” and select Don’t Show in Menu Bar.

Your name should disappear immediately. If it doesn’t, try logging out and back in, or restarting your Mac. This setting is global, so it affects all user accounts on the machine, not just the one you are logged into.

Method 2: Use the Accounts Pane (For Older macOS Versions)

If you are running macOS Monterey or earlier, the setting lives in a different place. The steps are:

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click Users & Groups.
  3. Click the lock icon and enter your administrator password.
  4. Click Login Options.
  5. Uncheck the box next to Show fast user switching menu as.

This removes the menu entirely. On these older systems, you could also change the display to show only the profile picture (choose “Icon” from the dropdown) which effectively hides your name while keeping the feature accessible.

Method 3: Rename Your Account (A Different Approach)

If you don’t want to disable the feature but simply don’t like the name that appears, you can change your display name. This is the name that shows in the menu bar, in the login window, and in your home folder’s “Shared” section. It is separate from your username (the short name used for your home directory).

  1. Go to System Settings > Users & Groups (or System Preferences > Users & Groups on older macOS).
  2. Click the lock and enter your password.
  3. Control-click (or right-click) your user account and select Advanced Options.
  4. Change the Full name field to whatever you want to appear.
  5. Click OK and restart your Mac for the change to take full effect.

Be careful with this method: do not change the “Account name” field. That is the short name used for your home folder and changing it can break file paths and permissions. The full name is the one displayed in the menu bar.

What If Your Name Still Shows After Disabling It?

Sometimes the name persists even after you turn off Fast User Switching. Here are a few things to check:

  • Check the Control Center settings again: Make sure you selected “Don’t Show in Menu Bar” rather than “Show in Menu Bar” or “Show as Icon.”
  • Check for third-party menu bar apps: Some apps (like iStat Menus or system monitoring tools) can add a user name display. Look for icons in your menu bar that you don’t recognize and check their preferences.
  • Check the login window: The name might not be in the menu bar but you might be seeing it in the login window. That is a separate setting: System Settings > Users & Groups > Automatic login (or Login Options). If automatic login is on, your name appears at the login screen before you enter your password. To hide it, you would need to disable automatic login, which means you’ll have to enter your password every time you start your Mac.
  • Restart your Mac: A simple restart often clears any UI glitches that keep the name visible.

Common Misconceptions

One common myth is that you can hide your name by changing your iCloud or Apple ID name. That doesn’t work. The menu bar name comes from your local user account’s full name, not your Apple ID. Another misconception is that you need to edit system files or use terminal commands to remove it. That’s not true for the standard feature; the settings above are sufficient. Editing system files can cause instability and isn’t recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will disabling Fast User Switching log me out or affect my apps?

No. Disabling the menu bar display simply hides the menu. It does not disable the ability to switch users. You can still switch users by locking the screen (Control+Command+Q) and choosing a different user from the login window. Your apps and sessions remain intact.

Can I hide just the name but keep the profile picture?

Yes, on macOS Monterey and earlier, you can set the “Show fast user switching menu as” option to “Icon.” This shows only the profile picture in the menu bar. On macOS Ventura and later, this option is not available; it’s either the full name and icon, or nothing.

Why is my name showing even though I never enabled Fast User Switching?

Fast User Switching is enabled by default on most Macs. It’s a standard feature, so you don’t have to turn it on; it’s already on. That’s why you see your name. You’re not doing anything wrong; it’s just the default setting.

Does this affect other users on my Mac?

Yes, the setting is global. If you turn it off, it’s off for all users. If you only want to hide your own name, you would need to change your full name (Method 3) or use a different approach, but there is no per-user setting for this menu bar item.

I changed my full name but the menu bar still shows the old name. What’s wrong?

You need to log out and back in for the change to take effect. The menu bar reads the name at login. If it still shows the old name after logging out and back in, restart your Mac completely. If it still persists, check the “Advanced Options” again to ensure you changed the “Full name” and not the “Account name.”
