Restore Memos on Samsung: 5 Ways That Work

Card No. 06·6064 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

If you’ve lost memos on your Samsung phone, you can usually get them back from Samsung Cloud, Google Keep, or the Samsung Notes app’s own trash folder. The right method depends on where your memos were saved and how long ago they disappeared. Below are the working ways to restore memos on Samsung devices, plus what to do if the usual fixes fail.

Where Samsung Memos Are Stored

Samsung phones have two different memo apps, and they store data in different places. The older Samsung Memo app (often just called “Memo) saves notes locally and to Samsung Cloud. The newer Samsung Notes app is the default on recent Galaxy phones and can sync to Samsung Cloud, Microsoft OneNote, or Google Drive, depending on your settings. Knowing which app you used is the first step, because the restore process is different for each.

  • Samsung Memo – older app, syncs only with Samsung Cloud.
  • Samsung Notes – current app, syncs with Samsung Cloud and can also connect to OneNote or Google Drive.
  • Google Keep – a separate Google app that some Samsung users use for quick notes; it syncs to your Google account.

If you’re not sure which app you used, look at the app name on your home screen or in the app drawer. If it just says “Notes with a yellow icon, it’s Samsung Notes. If it says “Memo, it’s the older app.

Restore From Samsung Cloud Backup

Samsung Cloud backs up your device data, including notes, when you enable automatic backup. To restore from a Samsung Cloud backup, you need to reset your phone or use the “Restore data option in Settings. This is the most reliable way if you have a recent backup.

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud.
  2. Tap Restore data.
  3. Select the device and the backup date you want.
  4. Choose Notes (or Memo) and tap Restore.

If you don’t see a backup from before your memos disappeared, you can’t restore from Samsung Cloud. Also, restoring data will overwrite current notes with the backup version, so if you’ve added new notes since the backup, they may be lost. To avoid that, you could first export your current notes as a backup file.

Check the Samsung Notes Trash

Samsung Notes has its own trash folder that keeps deleted notes for 15 days (or 30 days on some models). If you accidentally deleted a memo, this is the fastest way to get it back.

  1. Open the Samsung Notes app.
  2. Tap the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top left.
  3. Select Trash.
  4. Long-press the memo you want to restore, then tap Restore.

If the trash is empty or the memo isn’t there, it may have been permanently deleted or the 15-day period has passed. In that case, you’ll need to rely on a cloud backup or a third-party recovery tool.

Restore From Google Keep or Google Drive

If you used Google Keep for your memos, they sync automatically to your Google account. To restore them on a new phone or after a factory reset, just sign in with the same Google account and the notes will appear. If you deleted a note in Google Keep, you can recover it from the Keep trash within 7 days.

  1. Open the Google Keep app.
  2. Tap the menu (three lines) and select Trash.
  3. Tap the note and choose Restore.

If you synced Samsung Notes to Google Drive (through the Samsung Notes settings), you can also restore from there. Go to Samsung Notes > Settings > Sync with OneNote or Google Drive. If you had this enabled, your notes are safe in the cloud, and you can re-import them.

Use Smart Switch to Restore From a Computer

Samsung Smart Switch is a free program that lets you back up your phone to a computer and restore it later. If you had previously backed up your phone with Smart Switch, you can restore just the notes without resetting the phone.

  1. Install Smart Switch on your PC or Mac from Samsung’s official website.
  2. Connect your Samsung phone via USB.
  3. Open Smart Switch and choose Restore.
  4. Select the backup file and choose which data to restore (check Notes).
  5. Click Restore and wait for the process to finish.

Note that Smart Switch restore will overwrite current data on the phone, so it’s best to do this before you add new notes, or you’ll lose them.

When Nothing Works: Third-Party Recovery Apps

If you have no backup and the trash is empty, your last option is a third-party Android data recovery tool. These apps scan the internal storage for deleted file fragments and can sometimes recover notes that haven’t been overwritten. However, they are not guaranteed to work, and many require a paid subscription. Free versions often only let you preview files, not actually recover them.

Some popular options include Dr.Fone, EaseUS MobiSaver, and FonePaw. They work best if you stop using the phone immediately after the deletion, because new data can overwrite the deleted files. Also, these tools usually require USB debugging to be enabled, and they may not support the latest Samsung models.

If you’re not comfortable with third-party tools, you can also contact Samsung Support. They may be able to help if the issue is with Samsung Cloud sync, but they cannot recover data that was never backed up.

How to Prevent Future Memo Loss

The best way to avoid losing memos is to set up automatic backup. Here’s what to do:

  • In Samsung Notes, go to Settings > Sync with Samsung Cloud and turn on Auto sync.
  • Enable Auto backup in Samsung Cloud for your device.
  • If you use Google Keep, make sure you’re signed in and that sync is on.
  • Periodically export important notes as PDF or text files and save them to your computer or cloud drive.

Also, check your Samsung Cloud storage quota. If it’s full, backups may fail, and you could lose memos without realizing it. You can manage your storage in Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I recover deleted memos on Samsung without a backup?

Yes, but only if the memos are still in the Samsung Notes trash (within 15 days) or if you can use a third-party recovery tool. Without a backup or trash copy, recovery is unlikely because the data is overwritten.

Why did my Samsung memos disappear?

Common reasons include accidental deletion, a failed sync, a Samsung Cloud issue, or a system update that reset the app. If you recently reset your phone or changed accounts, that could also cause memos to vanish.

Are Samsung Notes backed up automatically?

Only if you enable automatic sync in the app. By default, Samsung Notes may not sync unless you turn it on. Check Samsung Notes > Settings > Sync with Samsung Cloud.

Can I restore memos from a Samsung Cloud backup to a new phone?

Yes. When you set up a new Samsung phone, you can sign into your Samsung account and choose to restore from a backup. Make sure you select the correct backup date and that it includes Notes.

What is the difference between Samsung Memo and Samsung Notes?

Samsung Memo is the older, simpler app that only stores plain text. Samsung Notes is the newer app that supports handwriting, images, and audio, and it syncs with Samsung Cloud and other services. If you have both, your memos are probably in the one you used most recently.

Does factory reset delete Samsung memos?

Yes, a factory reset erases all data on the phone, including memos, unless they are backed up to Samsung Cloud or another service. After a reset, you can restore from a backup during setup.
