Google Keep lets you attach a time- or location-based reminder to any note, and the reminder appears as a notification on your phone, tablet, or computer. You set it by opening a note, tapping the bell icon, and choosing a date and time (or a place). The reminder works across devices signed into the same Google account, but it does not repeat on a custom schedule—only preset intervals like daily, weekly, or monthly.
What Google Keep Reminders Actually Do
Google Keep reminders are tied to individual notes, not to a separate task list. When a reminder fires, Keep sends a notification and the note appears at the top of your list with a reminder badge. You can mark it done, snooze it, or leave it—if you leave it, the reminder stays active and will fire again at the next scheduled interval if you set one.
Reminders are stored in the cloud, so they sync across all devices where you are signed in with the same Google account. That includes the Android app, the iOS app, and the web version at keep.google.com. On a computer, you need to keep the Keep tab open (or have the Chrome app installed) to receive the notification; otherwise you will only see it when you open Keep.
How to Set a Time-Based Reminder
- Open the note you want to be reminded about.
- Tap or click the bell icon (reminder) at the bottom of the note.
- Choose Pick date & time.
- Select the date and the time, then tap Save.
The note will now show a small bell with the date and time. When that moment arrives, you get a notification saying “Reminder” with the note title and a snippet. If you want the reminder to repeat, tap the bell again, then choose Daily, Weekly, or Monthly—you cannot set a custom repeat (e.g., every 3 days or every weekday).
How to Set a Location-Based Reminder
Instead of a time, you can have Keep remind you when you arrive at or leave a specific place. This is useful for “buy milk when near the store” or “call mom when I leave work.”
- Open the note and tap the bell icon.
- Choose Pick place.
- Search for an address or business, or use your current location.
- Select either Arriving or Leaving.
Location reminders use your phone’s GPS, so they work only on a mobile device with location services enabled. They do not work on the web version. Also, the location detection is approximate—it may not fire exactly at the boundary, and it can be delayed if you are moving fast.
How to Edit or Remove a Reminder
To change a reminder, open the note and tap the bell icon again. You will see the current reminder with options to edit the date/time or place, change the repeat, or delete the reminder entirely. Deleting a reminder does not delete the note—it just removes the notification. If you mark a reminder as done, it disappears from the note; to bring it back, you need to re-add it.
If you have multiple reminders on one note (you can add more than one), each is independent. The note will show all active reminders, and each fires separately.
Common Problems and How to Fix Them
Reminder not showing up on my phone. Check that notifications are enabled for the Keep app in your phone’s settings. On Android, go to Settings > Apps > Google Keep > Notifications. On iOS, go to Settings > Notifications > Keep. Also make sure the app is not in battery-saver mode, which can delay or block notifications.
Reminder fires on my phone but not on my computer. The web version only shows notifications while the Keep tab is open. If you close the tab, you miss it. You can install Keep as a Progressive Web App (in Chrome, click the install icon in the address bar) and keep it running in the background, but it still may not push notifications if the browser is closed.
Location reminder never fires. Make sure the Keep app has location permission (Settings > Apps > Keep > Permissions > Location). Also, the place you chose may be too large or too small—Google uses a radius around the place, and if you are already inside that radius when you set it, it may fire immediately. Try setting it to a nearby landmark or a smaller area.
Reminder repeats on the wrong day. If you set a weekly reminder for Monday at 9 AM, it will fire every Monday. There is no way to set “every other Monday” or “every weekday.” For that, you need a different tool like Google Tasks or a dedicated reminder app.
Google Keep vs. Google Tasks vs. Calendar
Google Keep reminders are quick and tied to notes, but they lack flexibility. Google Tasks is a separate to-do list app that also syncs with Google Calendar—you can set due dates and subtasks, but it does not have location reminders. Google Calendar is the best for complex recurring events (e.g., every Tuesday and Thursday) and for full-day reminders, but it does not attach to freeform notes.
If you need a reminder that repeats on a custom schedule (every 2 days, every weekday, etc.), none of Google’s free tools do that natively. You would need a third-party app like Todoist or TickTick, or use a cron job on a server. For most people, Keep’s simple daily/weekly/monthly options are enough.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of Keep Reminders
- Use the snooze option when a reminder fires—you can postpone it by 1 hour, 2 hours, or until tomorrow.
- Add a checklist to a note with a reminder, so when the reminder fires you can tick off items directly.
- Use the label feature to group reminder notes (e.g., “Errands”, “Work”) and see them all at once.
- On Android, you can add a Keep widget to your home screen to see upcoming reminders at a glance.
- If you share a note with another person, reminders are not shared—each person must set their own reminder on the note.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I set a reminder for a specific time in the past? No, Keep will not let you pick a past time. If you try, it will either default to the next day or show an error.
Do Keep reminders work when the app is closed? Yes, on mobile they work even if the app is closed, as long as notifications are enabled. On desktop, the browser must be running with the Keep tab open.
Can I have multiple reminders on one note? Yes, you can add several time- and location-based reminders to the same note. Each fires independently.
How do I see all my upcoming reminders? In the Keep app, tap the menu (three lines) and choose “Reminders.” You will see a list of all notes with active reminders, sorted by date.
Why did my reminder disappear? If you marked it as done, it is gone. If you edited the note and accidentally removed the bell icon, the reminder is deleted. Also, if you delete the note, the reminder is gone with it.
Can I set a reminder for a contact’s birthday? Not directly. You would need to create a note with the birthday and set a yearly reminder (Keep does not have a “yearly” option, so you would have to set it manually each year).
