Set Up Apple AirTag Custom Name

Card No. 06·17136 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

To set up an Apple AirTag custom name, open the Find My app, tap the Items tab, select your AirTag, tap Rename Item, and choose a name from the list or tap Custom Name to type your own. This changes the name shown in Find My and the name that appears when you use the AirTag in Precision Finding or play a sound.

What the Name Is For

Your AirTag’s name is not stored on the tag itself—it lives in your iCloud account, tied to the AirTag’s serial number. This means the name is only visible to you and anyone you share the AirTag’s location with. The name appears in the Find My app, in the notification you get when you leave the AirTag behind, and in the alert that shows if a stranger’s AirTag is traveling with you. A clear, specific name helps you quickly identify which item you’re tracking, especially if you own several AirTags.

How to Change the Name (Step by Step)

  1. Open the Find My app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap the Items tab at the bottom.
  3. Tap the AirTag you want to rename.
  4. Tap Rename Item.
  5. Choose a suggested name (like “Backpack or “Keys) or tap Custom Name and type your own.
  6. Tap Done.

You can also change the emoji that appears next to the name by tapping the current icon and picking a new one. The name and icon update immediately across all your devices signed in to the same Apple ID.

What You Can Name It

Apple lets you use almost any text for a custom name, but keep it short enough to read at a glance. Practical examples include:

  • “House Keysâ€ or “Car Keysâ€
  • “Blue Backpackâ€ (color helps when you have multiple similar items)
  • “Bike – Commuterâ€
  • “Luggage – Redâ€

Avoid using the same generic name for multiple AirTags—if you have two “Keys tags, you won’t know which one is ringing. Instead, add a distinguishing detail like “Apartment Keys vs. “Office Keys.

Common Problems and Fixes

If you don’t see the Rename Item option, make sure you’re looking at the correct AirTag in the Items tab—not the “Items section of a shared family group. If you’re sharing the AirTag’s location with someone, they’ll see the name you set, but they can’t change it. If you rename an AirTag and the old name still appears in a notification, force-quit the Find My app and reopen it; the name should refresh.

Another common issue: you can’t rename an AirTag that isn’t currently connected to your iPhone. The AirTag needs to be nearby and connected via Bluetooth for the rename to save. If you get an error, move the AirTag closer to your phone and try again.

Does the Name Affect Tracking or Alerts?

No. The name is purely cosmetic and organizational. It does not change how the AirTag communicates, how often it updates its location, or how the “unknown AirTag safety alert works. When someone else’s AirTag is moving with you, the alert on your iPhone shows the name that the owner assigned—so a generic name like “Keys is less helpful in that context than a specific one like “John’s Wallet. Keep that in mind if you’re naming a tag you might lend or attach to an item that could be lost.

Naming for Shared or Lost AirTags

If you plan to share the AirTag’s location with a family member or friend (using the Find My sharing feature), choose a name they’ll recognize. For example, “Mom’s Car Keys is clearer than “Keys. If you lose the item and someone finds it, they can tap the AirTag with their iPhone to see a message you set up (Lost Mode) along with the name you gave the tag. A descriptive name helps the finder understand what the tag belongs to, but remember: the finder only sees the name and your lost-mode message, not your phone number unless you enter it in Lost Mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rename an AirTag without the Find My app?

No. The Find My app is the only place to change an AirTag’s name. You can’t do it from the Settings app or from a Mac’s Finder, and there’s no web interface for managing AirTags.

Will renaming an AirTag erase its pairing or location history?

No. Renaming only changes the display name. The AirTag stays paired to your Apple ID, and its location history (if you have that enabled) is unaffected.

Can I use emoji in the custom name?

Yes, you can include emoji in the custom name field, but most people prefer to set the emoji separately via the icon picker. Using emoji in the text can make the name longer and harder to read in notifications.

Why did my AirTag name change by itself?

This can happen if you set up a new iPhone and restored from a backup, or if you signed into a different Apple ID. The name is tied to your Apple ID, so if you use a different account, you’ll see that account’s names. It’s not a glitch—check which Apple ID is active in Find My.

Does the name show up on the AirTag itself?

No. The AirTag has no display. The name only appears in the Find My app, in notifications, and in the “Unknown AirTag alert on other people’s iPhones.
