In Solo Leveling, hunter ranks from lowest to highest are E, D, C, B, A, and S, with National Level being an unofficial title given to the few S-Rank hunters who have defeated a Monarch-level threat. This article explains the rank system, how hunters are evaluated, and what truly separates a National Level hunter from a regular S-Rank.

Formula

The calculator above works out your average running pace and speed. The formula for pace is:

pace (min/km) = total time (min) ÷ distance (km)

Speed is the inverse, expressed in kilometres per hour:

speed (km/h) = distance (km) ÷ (total time (min) ÷ 60)

Variables: t = total time in minutes, d = distance in kilometres. If you prefer miles, convert distance to km first (1 mile = 1.60934 km) or use the pace in min/mile by keeping distance in miles.

Worked Example

Using the defaults from the calculator: t = 50 minutes, d = 10 km.

  1. Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.0 min/km.
  2. Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.0 km/h.

The calculator shows pace = 5.0 min/km and speed = 12.0 km/h.

Hunter Rank System in Solo Leveling

In the world of Solo Leveling, hunters are classified by the Korea Hunter Association using a magical evaluation device. The device measures a person’s mana output and assigns a letter grade from E to S. The ranks are:

  • E-Rank – Lowest tier, barely above a normal human. They can handle the weakest monsters in low-level gates.
  • D-Rank – Slightly stronger, often work in groups to clear low-level dungeons.
  • C-Rank – Mid-tier, capable of taking on moderate threats alone or in small teams.
  • B-Rank – Above average, often team leaders or elite fighters.
  • A-Rank – High-tier, among the strongest in any country. They can handle high-level gates.
  • S-Rank – The highest official rank. These hunters are rare and powerful enough to fight continent-level threats.

There is no official rank above S. The National Level title is not a separate class but a recognition given to S-Rank hunters who have accomplished something extraordinary.

What Does National Level Mean?

National Level is a title given to S-Rank hunters who have defeated a Monarch – one of the rulers of the dark realm. In the series, only a handful of hunters worldwide earn this title, and they are considered the ultimate human weapons. The title is not awarded by any organization; it is a public acknowledgment of their feat. These hunters are strong enough to fight toe-to-toe with the highest-tier monsters, and their power is often compared to that of a small army.

The first National Level hunters appeared after the defeat of the Monarchs during the early days of the gates. Their power is so immense that governments treat them as strategic assets. For example, Thomas Andre, the strongest hunter in the United States, is a National Level hunter. In the story, the title is also tied to the concept of “Rulers – the beings who oppose the Monarchs – and the power they bestow on certain humans.

How Hunters Are Ranked

The ranking process is simple: a hunter places their hand on a crystal device that measures mana. The device then displays a letter. The measurement is based on the amount of magical energy the person can channel, not their combat skill or experience. This is why some hunters can fight above their rank, like Sung Jin-Woo, who starts as an E-Rank but later becomes far stronger after gaining the System.

The ranks are also used to determine which gates a hunter is allowed to enter. Each gate has a rank requirement, and entering a higher-ranked gate without the proper rank can be fatal. The association enforces these rules to prevent unnecessary deaths.

Common Misconceptions

One common misconception is that National Level is a rank above S. It is not. It is a title, and all National Level hunters are still classified as S-Rank. Another misconception is that all S-Rank hunters are National Level – false. Most S-Rank hunters, even the strongest in their country, have never fought a Monarch. The title is reserved for those who have directly contributed to defeating one.

Another point of confusion is the difference between National Level and the “Rulers. The Rulers are ancient beings who grant power to select humans. National Level hunters often receive power from a Ruler, but not all of them do. The title is based on the deed, not the source of power.

How to Choose Your Rank Goal

If you are a fan of the series and want to set a personal goal, think about what rank you would want to be. E-Rank is realistic for a normal person – it means you have a slight edge over a regular human. D and C are for those who train seriously. B and A are for elite athletes or martial artists. S-Rank is the dream of every hunter, but it requires exceptional talent and luck. National Level is the ultimate achievement, but it is almost impossible to reach without a supernatural intervention.

For a real-world parallel, think of martial arts belts: E is white, S is black, and National Level is like a black belt who has won an international championship – the belt is still black, but the reputation is different.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is National Level stronger than S-Rank?

No, National Level is not a separate rank. It is an honorary title for S-Rank hunters who have defeated a Monarch. In practice, they are among the strongest S-Ranks, but the title itself does not grant additional power.

How many National Level hunters are there?

The series does not give an exact number, but it mentions a handful worldwide. The known ones include Thomas Andre (USA), Liu Zhigang (China), and Siddharth Bachchan (India). The exact count is never specified.

Can an E-Rank become S-Rank?

In the story, Sung Jin-Woo starts as the weakest E-Rank and becomes the strongest S-Rank (and beyond) through the System. However, this is a unique case. Normally, a hunter’s rank is fixed at their awakening and does not change.

What is the difference between a Monarch and a Ruler?

Monarchs are the rulers of the dark realm, who seek to destroy humanity. Rulers are the beings who oppose them and sometimes bestow power on humans. National Level hunters typically receive power from a Ruler, but not all do.

Is the rank system based on mana only?

Yes, the official ranking measures mana output. However, combat ability, experience, and special abilities can make a hunter perform above their rank. The association only uses mana for classification.

Do National Level hunters have special privileges?

Yes, they are treated as national treasures. They can demand high fees, have direct access to government leaders, and are exempt from many regulations. Governments also rely on them to handle the highest-level gates.
