“Google them” means to search for information about a person, company, or topic using the Google search engine—or any search engine, since the term has become generic. You enter a name or phrase into the search bar, and Google returns web pages, images, news, and other results that help you learn more about that subject. This article explains what “googling someone” involves, how to do it effectively, and what you can—and cannot—find.

Formula

The calculator above computes your average running pace and speed from a given distance and finish time. The two formulas are:

  • Pace = Finish time (in minutes) ÷ Distance (in kilometers). The result is minutes per kilometer.
  • Speed = Distance (in kilometers) ÷ (Finish time in minutes ÷ 60). The result is kilometers per hour.

Variables: t = finish time in minutes, d = distance in kilometers. Pace is expressed as min/km; speed is km/h.

Worked Example

Using the default values: finish time = 50 minutes, distance = 10 km.

  1. Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.0 min/km.
  2. Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.0 km/h.

The calculator shows an average pace of 5.00 min/km and an average speed of 12.00 km/h.

When to Use This Calculator

Use this tool when you have a race time or training run and want to know your average pace per kilometer (or mile) and your overall speed. It is helpful for setting training goals, comparing runs, or planning race splits. If you work in miles, convert distance to kilometers first (1 mile = 1.60934 km) or use a pace calculator that supports both units.

How to Read the Results

A lower pace (e.g., 4:30 min/km) means faster running; a higher pace (e.g., 6:00 min/km) means slower. Speed in km/h is the inverse: faster runners have higher km/h values. For example, a 5:00 min/km pace equals 12 km/h. If you run on a treadmill that shows speed in mph, multiply km/h by 0.621371 to get miles per hour.

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing units: Entering time in hours instead of minutes, or distance in miles instead of kilometers, gives wrong results. Always convert to the units the formula expects.
  • Rounding too early: If you round the time to the nearest minute, the pace can be off by several seconds. Use exact minutes and seconds (convert seconds to decimal minutes) for accuracy.
  • Ignoring elevation: This calculator assumes flat terrain. Hills make actual effort higher than the pace suggests.

Limitations of the Formula

The pace formula gives an average over the whole distance. It does not account for variations in speed during the run, walking breaks, or environmental factors like wind and heat. For interval training, you would need to calculate each segment separately. Also, the formula works for any distance, but very short or very long runs may not reflect your typical pace due to fatigue or sprinting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert pace to speed?

Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km). For example, a 5:00 min/km pace gives 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h. To get mph, multiply by 0.621371.

What is a good running pace for a beginner?

There is no single answer—it depends on age, fitness, and gender. A common conversational pace for a beginner might be 6:30 to 8:00 min/km (9.2 to 7.5 km/h). Focus on effort rather than a specific number.

Can I use this for walking?

Yes. The formula works for any activity where you cover a distance in a known time. Walking pace is typically 10–15 min/km (4–6 km/h).

How do I enter time if I have hours and seconds?

Convert everything to minutes. For example, 1 hour 20 minutes 30 seconds = 60 + 20 + 30/60 = 80.5 minutes. Enter 80.5 in the time field.

Does the calculator work for miles?

Not directly. You must convert miles to kilometers (multiply by 1.60934) before entering. Alternatively, use a pace calculator that accepts miles and outputs min/mile.
