Strict or Moderate NAT in CoD Vanguard?

Card No. 06·24484 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

For Call of Duty: Vanguard, Moderate NAT is usually enough to play, while Open NAT generally makes matchmaking and joining friends easier; Strict NAT is the one most likely to cause connection trouble. NAT status reflects how your network handles game connections, not your skill, account, or a setting inside Vanguard that guarantees better gameplay.

What NAT means in Vanguard

NAT stands for Network Address Translation. A home router uses it to let several devices share one public internet address while keeping track of their individual connections. Online games also need to communicate with other players and game services, and the way the router handles incoming connections can affect which players or sessions are reachable.

Vanguard displays a NAT type to summarize how accessible your connection is for multiplayer networking. The labels are commonly understood as follows:

  • Open: Connections are generally least restricted. Matchmaking and joining other players are less likely to be hindered by NAT limitations.
  • Moderate: You can normally play online, but some connections may be less reliable or compatible. Joining a particular friend or party can sometimes be harder.
  • Strict: Incoming connections are more restricted. You may have trouble joining parties, connecting to certain players, or finding compatible matches.

These labels are useful shorthand, not a complete diagnosis. Matchmaking also depends on game services, platform settings, regional availability, other players’ connections, and the state of your local network.

Is Moderate NAT good enough?

For most players, yes. If you can find matches, play without repeated connection errors, and join your friends when needed, there may be no practical reason to change a Moderate result. The word “Moderate” does not mean that your internet speed has been cut in half, nor does it automatically mean you will experience lag.

NAT type and connection quality are different things. A player with Open NAT can still have high latency, packet loss, or slow downloads. Conversely, Moderate NAT can work smoothly when the router and game services establish a suitable connection. If the only symptom is a Moderate label, check whether anything is actually failing before changing router settings.

Strict NAT is more worth investigating when it coincides with a specific problem: for example, you can play alone but cannot join a friend’s party, invitations fail repeatedly, or matchmaking struggles to establish sessions. Even then, the label is a clue rather than proof that the router is the sole cause.

How to check your NAT type

Look for the NAT type or connection information in Vanguard’s multiplayer menus. The exact screen placement can differ by platform, game updates, or menu layout, so check the multiplayer or network-status area rather than assuming a particular button sequence. Your gaming platform may also provide a separate network test, which can help show whether the issue is specific to Vanguard or affects the console or PC more broadly.

When checking, note the result and the problem you are trying to solve. A useful comparison is whether the game reports the same type after a normal restart and whether other online games or party features have similar difficulties. Do not treat a speed test as a NAT test: download speed and NAT status measure different aspects of networking.

What to try if NAT is Strict

Start with low-risk checks before changing advanced router settings:

  1. Restart the connection. Close the game, restart the console or PC, then restart the router and modem if they are separate devices. Give the network time to reconnect before checking again.
  2. Use a direct home connection. If possible, connect to your own router rather than a public, school, hotel, or managed network. Those networks may restrict the settings needed for peer connections, and you may not have permission to change them.
  3. Check for multiple routers. A modem-router plus a second router, mesh gateway, or internet-provider gateway can create more than one layer of NAT. Confirm how the devices are connected; changing settings blindly can disrupt other devices.
  4. Update and retest. Install available system and game updates, then check the connection again. Also see whether the platform’s network test reports a problem.
  5. Ask the network administrator or internet provider. If you are on a shared or managed connection, they may be the only party able to clarify or change its NAT configuration.

Router features such as UPnP or port forwarding can affect how games receive connections, but they are not universal fixes. Menu names and available options vary by router, and a change that helps one network may do nothing on another. Consult the router manufacturer’s instructions or your provider before modifying settings. Avoid copying port numbers from an unrelated guide unless they are confirmed for your exact game, platform, and current configuration.

Why NAT changes may not work

Some internet connections use carrier-grade NAT, where the provider shares a public address among customers. In that arrangement, configuring your home router alone may not produce Open NAT, because another translation layer exists outside your home. A provider can explain what options are available for the connection; do not assume a particular service or configuration is supported.

Another common complication is double NAT from two routers. This can happen when an internet gateway routes traffic and a separate personal router also operates in router mode. The right remedy depends on the equipment and network design; randomly disabling firewall or routing features can cause connectivity or security problems.

NAT type can also vary between networks, platforms, and test results. A mobile hotspot, shared apartment network, or public Wi-Fi connection may behave differently from a home broadband connection. If the type changes but gameplay remains fine, that change alone is not a reason to keep adjusting the router.

Open versus Moderate: what should you choose?

You generally do not choose a NAT type from a Vanguard menu. It is reported based on the network path between your device, router, provider, and game services. The practical goal is a stable connection that lets you play and join the people you want to play with—not obtaining an Open label at any cost.

Use this quick guide:

  • Moderate, no connection problems: Keep playing; no change is usually necessary.
  • Moderate, trouble joining one person: Check both players’ network and platform connection status. The issue may be on either side or with the party connection.
  • Strict with repeated problems: Restart and check the local network first, then investigate multiple routers or provider restrictions.
  • Open but poor gameplay: Investigate latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, or service availability instead of focusing on NAT.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Moderate NAT bad in CoD Vanguard?
Usually not. Moderate NAT supports normal play for many people. Consider changing the network only if you have a concrete issue, such as consistently failing to join friends.

Does Open NAT reduce lag?
Not necessarily. NAT describes connection accessibility, while lag is more closely associated with latency, packet loss, congestion, or an unstable connection. Open NAT cannot guarantee a low-ping match.

Can I change NAT type inside Vanguard?
Generally, no. Vanguard reports the network’s NAT behavior; the router, internet connection, and platform network configuration determine it. The game’s menus may show status but do not replace router configuration.

Why can’t I join my friend with Moderate NAT?
Party connections can depend on both players’ networks and the route between them. Check that each person can connect to the game and platform services, restart the game and network equipment, and compare whether either player has Strict NAT.

Will port forwarding always make NAT Open?
No. The result depends on the router, network layout, provider, and applicable game and platform requirements. Double NAT or carrier-grade NAT can prevent a change on one home router from having the expected effect.
