Instructions
- Scan fragments to unlock blueprints. Most equipment and vehicle blueprints are unlocked by scanning 2–3 fragments found in wrecks or scattered on the seafloor. Use your scanner and keep an eye on the HUD for fragment icons.
- Find data boxes for special blueprints. Some blueprints (like the Modification Station, Stillsuit, and certain vehicle upgrades) come from data boxes inside wrecks. These are larger, glowing containers that you can open by hand.
- Check the Fabricator. Once a blueprint is unlocked, it appears in your Fabricator or Vehicle Upgrade Console. Open the relevant tab to see the recipe and required materials.
- Gather the listed ingredients. Use the Ingredients list above as a shopping list. Most basic materials come from breaking outcrops with your knife or using the Prawn Suit drill arm.
- Craft the item. Approach the Fabricator, select the blueprint, and confirm. The item will be produced instantly, but some large items (like vehicle modules) need to be built in the Moonpool or Vehicle Bay.
- Install upgrades. For vehicle upgrades (like the Seamoth Depth Module), open the upgrade panel on the vehicle and insert the module. Some upgrades stack (e.g., multiple depth modules) but check the tooltip for the max.
- Use the Habitat Builder for base pieces. Base blueprints (like the Multipurpose Room) are unlocked by scanning fragments, but you build them with the Habitat Builder tool, not the Fabricator.
Tips
- Prioritize the Seamoth and its depth module. The Seamoth is your first real vehicle and makes exploration much safer. Its depth module MK1 is essential for reaching deeper biomes where rare materials like magnetite and lithium are found.
- Scan everything you see. Even if you think you have the blueprint, scanning extra fragments can unlock alternate recipes or reduce the cost of crafting (in some cases). It also gives you valuable data on flora and fauna.
- Don’t hoard raw materials. Some materials like copper and silver are used in many recipes, but you can always find more. It’s better to craft what you need and store surplus in lockers rather than carrying everything.
- Use beacons to mark fragment locations. If you find a wreck with fragments you can’t scan yet (because you lack the laser cutter or propulsion cannon), place a beacon so you can return later.
Serving Suggestions
These blueprints are best used in combination. Build a Seamoth with a depth module and storage module, then explore wrecks in deeper biomes to unlock the Prawn Suit and Cyclops. Use the Cyclops as a mobile base, and the Prawn Suit for mining large resource deposits. For base building, start with a simple corridor and hatch, then expand to a Multipurpose Room with a Fabricator, battery charger, and water filtration machine.
Variations
- Hardcore mode: In Hardcore, you only have one life, so prioritize the Seamoth and a reliable air supply (like the High Capacity O2 Tank) early. Also, avoid exploring deep caves without a vehicle.
- Creative mode: All blueprints are already unlocked, and you don’t need materials. You can still scan fragments for fun, but it’s not necessary.
- Modded playthroughs: Some mods add new blueprints or change recipe costs. This guide covers the vanilla Early Access recipes; if you use mods, check their documentation for changes.
Storage and Reheating
In Subnautica 2, storage is about organizing your resources. Use labeled lockers in your base or Cyclops to sort materials by type (e.g., “Metals,” “Crystals,” “Organic”). For vehicles, the Seamoth has a small storage compartment (4 slots) that can be upgraded to 6. The Prawn Suit has 6 slots, and the Cyclops has a large storage locker plus wall lockers. Always keep a spare battery or power cell in a locker near your vehicle charging station. When you need to “reheat” a blueprint, just revisit the Fabricator – it remembers all unlocked recipes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I unlock the Seamoth?
Scan 2 Seamoth fragments, which are commonly found in the Grassy Plateaus and around the Aurora’s wreckage. Once scanned, the blueprint appears in the Mobile Vehicle Bay.
Q: Where do I find the Laser Cutter blueprint?
The Laser Cutter blueprint is found in a data box inside the wreck in the Grassy Plateaus (around 200m depth). You’ll need a repair tool to fix the hull and a scanner to find the data box.
Q: Can I craft the Cyclops without the Prawn Suit?
Yes, but you need the Cyclops fragments, which are located in the Mushroom Forest and the Aurora’s cargo bay. You don’t need the Prawn Suit to build the Cyclops, but you’ll need it later for mining large deposits.
Q: What’s the fastest way to get lithium?
Lithium is found in shale outcrops, which are common in the Mountain Island caves and the Jellyshroom Cave. You can also find it as a large resource deposit in the Deep Grand Reef.
Q: How do I unlock the Prawn Suit drill arm?
The drill arm blueprint is found in a data box in the Deep Grand Reef wreck (around 500m). You’ll need the Prawn Suit itself to reach that depth safely, so it’s a bit of a chicken-and-egg problem. Alternatively, you can use the Seamoth with a depth module MK2 to get there.
Q: Are blueprint recipes the same as in the original Subnautica?
Mostly, but some have changed in Early Access. For example, the Seamoth now requires a plasteel ingot, and the Cyclops requires a shield generator. Always check the Fabricator for the current recipe.
