Super Mario Bros. Wonder includes eight core power-ups that change how Mario and his friends play: the Elephant Fruit, Bubble Flower, Drill Mushroom, and the returning Fire Flower, Super Mushroom, Super Star, 1-Up Mushroom, and Boo Mushroom. You get these by hitting ? Blocks, finding them in the open, or buying them from Poplin shops in certain levels. Each one has a distinct ability, and several have hidden uses beyond their obvious effect.

Formula

The calculator above works out your average pace and speed for a run or ride. Pace is the time it takes to cover one kilometer, and speed is the distance covered in one hour. The formulas are:

Pace (min/km) = Finish time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)

Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish time (minutes) ÷ 60)

Variables: t = finish time in minutes, d = distance in kilometers. Pace is shown in minutes per kilometer (min/km), speed in kilometers per hour (km/h).

Worked Example

Using the default values: you finish a 5 km run in 10 minutes.

Pace = 10 ÷ 5 = 2.00 min/km

Speed = 5 ÷ (10 ÷ 60) = 5 ÷ 0.1667 = 30.00 km/h

The calculator returns a pace of 2.00 min/km and a speed of 30.00 km/h.

Why the Elephant Fruit Is the Standout

The Elephant Fruit turns you into an elephant, and it is the most versatile new power-up in Wonder. You can smash blocks, break through certain walls, and use your trunk to suck up water and spray it to activate flowers or defeat enemies. The elephant form also gives you a larger hitbox, so you are easier to hit, but the trade-off is worth it for the extra strength. In co-op, an elephant player can carry another player on their back, which is a handy way to cross gaps or reach high platforms.

Bubble Flower and Drill Mushroom: Utility Over Power

The Bubble Flower lets you shoot bubbles that trap enemies and act as floating platforms. You can ride a bubble to reach high areas, and the bubbles can also activate certain Wonder Flowers. The Drill Mushroom lets you drill into the ground or ceiling, move underground to avoid enemies, and drill through specific blocks. Both power-ups are more about navigation than combat, and they are often the key to finding hidden exits or secret areas.

How to Get Each Power-Up

Power-ups appear in three main ways:

  • Hit a ? Block – the most common method, and the block will always give the same power-up in that spot.
  • Find them in the open – some levels have power-ups sitting on the ground or floating in the air, often in hard-to-reach places.
  • Buy from Poplin shops – these shops appear in some levels and sell power-ups for Flower Coins, which you collect in each level.

You can also carry one spare power-up in your inventory by touching the item while you already have one active. This lets you switch between two forms by pressing the item button.

Which Power-Up Should You Choose?

There is no single best power-up; it depends on the level and your goal. If you want to break blocks and smash through obstacles, the Elephant Fruit is the best choice. If you are in a level with lots of pits, the Bubble Flower gives you a safe platform. The Drill Mushroom is ideal for levels with ceilings you can drill into to avoid enemies. The Fire Flower is still the best for ranged attacks, and the Super Star makes you invincible for a short time, which is great for rushing through dangerous sections.

Common Misconceptions About Power-Ups

One common mistake is thinking the Elephant Fruit lets you swim better – it does not. In water, the elephant form is slower and harder to control. Another misconception is that the Drill Mushroom can break any block; it only works on blocks with a drill icon or that are specifically designed for it. Also, the Boo Mushroom, which turns you into a ghost, does not make you invincible – you still take damage from enemies, but you can pass through certain walls and become semi-transparent.

How Power-Ups Work in Co-Op

In multiplayer, each player has their own power-up state. If one player takes damage and loses their power-up, they can grab a new one from a block or from another player who has a spare. When a player with a power-up touches another player, they can share the power-up if the other has none. This makes co-op a great way to get the Elephant Fruit early, as one player can grab it and then share it with the team.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many power-ups are in Super Mario Bros. Wonder?

There are eight standard power-ups: Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, Super Star, 1-Up Mushroom, Elephant Fruit, Bubble Flower, Drill Mushroom, and Boo Mushroom. Some levels also have temporary transformations triggered by Wonder Flowers, but those are not permanent power-ups.

Can you keep a power-up after finishing a level?

Yes, if you finish a level while holding a power-up, you keep it for the next level. If you die and use a retry, you lose the power-up and start from the beginning of the level with no power-up.

What is the best power-up in the game?

Most players consider the Elephant Fruit the best because it combines strength, utility, and co-op potential. The Bubble Flower is a close second for its platforming help. The Fire Flower remains the best for pure offense.

Do power-ups work differently for each character?

No, the effect is the same for all characters. However, characters like Yoshi and Nabbit take no damage from enemies, so they can use power-ups without the risk of losing them to a single hit.

Can you buy power-ups with Flower Coins?

Yes, Poplin shops sell power-ups for Flower Coins. The price varies by shop, and they usually sell the Elephant Fruit, Bubble Flower, or Drill Mushroom. You can also find 1-Up Mushrooms and Super Mushrooms in some shops.

Is the Boo Mushroom worth using?

The Boo Mushroom is situational. It lets you phase through certain walls and becomes semi-transparent, which can help you avoid enemies, but it does not make you invincible. It is useful in levels with many ghost enemies or hidden passages, but not essential for most players.
