Tensor G4 vs Tensor G3: What Actually Changed?

Card No. 06·36122 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

The Tensor G4 is Google’s newer-generation phone processor, while the Tensor G3 is its predecessor; the G4 brings a modest, practical update rather than a dramatic redesign. If you are choosing between phones that use them, the phone’s camera, battery life, price, software support and overall condition matter at least as much as the chip name.

Where the G4 and G3 fit

Google’s Tensor processors are the main application processors in its Pixel phones. They handle general computing, graphics, image processing and many machine-learning tasks, working alongside other components such as memory, storage, cameras and a separate cellular modem. The Tensor G3 appeared in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, released in 2023. Tensor G4 arrived in the Pixel 9 family in 2024.

That generation gap matters, but it does not make the G4 a completely different class of processor. Both chips are designed around Google’s priorities: Pixel software features, computational photography and on-device AI, alongside everyday phone performance. A processor comparison can indicate likely differences, but it cannot tell you how fast every individual phone will feel or how long its battery will last.

What changed in Tensor G4

Tensor G4 updates the CPU and other parts of the platform. Google described it as an efficiency-focused generation, with a newer CPU configuration than the G3. In broad terms, that means the G4 is the more recent design and can offer improvements in responsiveness and efficiency in some workloads. It should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every app runs noticeably faster.

Both chips use a nine-core CPU, but their core arrangements differ. Tensor G3 has one high-performance Cortex-X3 core, four Cortex-A715 cores and four Cortex-A510 efficiency cores. Tensor G4 has one Cortex-X4, three Cortex-A720 and four Cortex-A520 cores. These are different generations of Arm CPU cores, and the G4’s newer design is one reason it can improve performance and power efficiency. Actual results still depend on clock speeds, software, cooling, workload and the phone’s other hardware.

Google also changed the modem generation: Pixel 9 phones with Tensor G4 use a newer Samsung modem than the Pixel 8 generation. Modem performance affects cellular connectivity, but reception and battery drain vary with carrier bands, signal strength, network conditions and location. It is not possible to promise that a G4 phone will always have better reception than a G3 phone.

Performance in everyday use

For ordinary tasks—messaging, browsing, maps, video, email and switching between common apps—both generations are capable. The G4’s newer cores can help with demanding tasks and may make some operations quicker, but the difference is often less striking than a comparison of processor names suggests. A phone with more available memory, less background activity or a cleaner software installation can feel faster regardless of which Tensor chip it uses.

Graphics performance is also not captured by the CPU core names. Games depend on the GPU, game optimization, screen resolution, temperature and sustained power limits. A newer chip may be a better starting point, but do not assume the G4 will deliver a fixed frame-rate increase in every game. Look for independent testing of the particular phone and game if gaming performance is a priority.

Benchmark results can help compare devices under a defined test, but they are not a direct measure of the complete experience. Tests may use different software versions, temperatures and settings. A short benchmark also may not reflect performance after a phone warms up during a long gaming session.

AI, photography and Pixel features

Tensor is closely tied to Google’s machine-learning and image-processing features. The G4 supports newer Pixel-generation features, but a phone feature is not determined by its processor alone. Google may limit a feature to particular models, require a software update, or process some tasks using cloud services. Availability can also vary by region, language and account settings.

Camera results are a particularly common source of confusion. The processor helps combine and process image data, but the camera sensors, lenses, stabilization and Google’s image-processing software also shape the final photo. A Pixel 9 camera may outperform a Pixel 8 in a particular situation, but that does not prove the G4 alone caused the difference. Compare camera samples and features for the exact phone models you are considering.

Nor does “newer AI chip” mean every AI task runs locally or instantly. Some tasks require an internet connection or use remote computing; others may run on the phone. Check the requirements for a named feature instead of treating the chip generation as a guarantee.

Which one should you choose?

Choose based on the complete phone and what you need from it. The G4 is the straightforward pick if you are buying a Pixel 9-series model and want the newer generation, but it is not automatically the better value for every buyer. A discounted Pixel 8 may be a sensible option if its performance, camera system and support period meet your needs.

  • Pick a G4 phone if you want a newer Pixel model, its specific features, or the newer processor and modem generation.
  • Consider a G3 phone if it costs substantially less and you mainly use everyday apps, take photos and watch video.
  • Compare exact models for camera hardware, display size, battery capacity, memory, storage, durability and software-support dates.
  • For gaming or sustained workloads, consult tests of the exact devices rather than relying on chip specifications alone.

Software support is a model-level issue, not just a processor issue. Google announced seven years of software support for the Pixel 8 generation and for the Pixel 9 generation, measured from when each phone first became available in the US. Because the launch dates differ, the later generation’s support period extends further into the future. Check Google’s current support information for the exact model and purchase market before buying, especially if long-term updates are important.

Common comparison mistakes

The first mistake is treating a chip as the whole phone. Battery life depends on display use, signal strength, software, battery condition and workload as well as processor efficiency. A used Pixel 8 with a worn battery may last less time than a new Pixel 9, but that comparison says little about the chips in isolation.

Another mistake is expecting a generation increase to transform performance. The G4 is newer, but both processors belong to the same broad Tensor family and are intended for similar Pixel use. Also avoid comparing isolated benchmark numbers without checking the device, test version and conditions. Finally, do not assume a feature advertised for one Pixel generation is available on every phone with a Tensor chip; verify device-specific eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tensor G4 much faster than Tensor G3?
The G4 is newer and uses newer CPU cores, so it can be faster in some workloads. The size of the difference depends on the task and phone; everyday use may not feel dramatically different.

Does Tensor G4 have better battery life?
It may benefit from efficiency improvements, but battery life is not determined by the processor alone. Phone model, display, signal, settings, workload and battery condition all matter.

Is Tensor G4 better for gaming?
It is the newer platform, but gaming depends heavily on GPU performance, cooling and game optimization. Compare sustained tests for the specific Pixel models and games you care about.

Can Tensor G3 run newer Pixel AI features?
Some features are available on G3 phones, while others are limited to newer models or have separate hardware, software, language or online-service requirements. Check the feature’s current device requirements.

Should I buy a Pixel 8 or Pixel 9?
Compare the exact models’ prices, cameras, battery condition, screen and software-support timelines. The Pixel 9 generation has Tensor G4; the Pixel 8 generation has Tensor G3, but value depends on the whole device and your priorities.
