Formula

The calculator on this page works out your average pace and speed from a finish time and distance. The formulas are:

  • Pace = finish time (minutes) ÷ distance (km), giving minutes per kilometer.
  • Speed = distance (km) ÷ (finish time (minutes) ÷ 60), giving kilometers per hour.

Variables: t = finish time in minutes, d = distance in kilometers. Pace is the number of minutes it takes to cover one kilometer; speed is how many kilometers you cover in one hour.

Worked Example

Using the default values from the calculator: finish time = 50 minutes, distance = 10 km.

  1. Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
  2. Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h

The calculator returns a pace of 5.00 min/km and a speed of 12.00 km/h.

When to Use This Calculator

Use this tool whenever you finish a run, ride, or walk and want to know your average pace or speed without doing the math yourself. It is especially useful for training plans that specify target paces (e.g., “run 5K at 6:00 min/km) or for comparing two workouts of different distances. The result is an average, not a split-by-split breakdown, so it works best for steady efforts rather than interval sessions.

How to Read the Result

A lower pace number means faster running (fewer minutes per kilometer). A higher speed number also means faster movement. For example, a pace of 4:30 min/km equals 13.33 km/h, while a pace of 6:00 min/km equals 10 km/h. If you train in miles, convert your distance to kilometers first (1 mile = 1.60934 km) or convert the final pace: 1 min/km = 1.60934 min/mile.

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing units: Entering distance in miles but expecting km/h will give a wrong speed. Always convert to kilometers or use a mile-based calculator.
  • Using seconds instead of minutes: If your finish time is 50 minutes and 30 seconds, enter 50.5, not 50.30.
  • Rounding too early: If you round the pace to 5.0 and then compute speed from that rounded value, you may get 12.0 instead of 12.0 exactly – but for longer distances the error grows.

Limits of the Formula

The formula assumes a constant speed over the whole distance. Real-world runs include hills, stops, and varying effort, so your actual pace per kilometer will differ. The calculator also ignores elevation gain, wind, and surface type. For hilly routes, your average pace will be slower than on flat ground even if your effort is the same. Use this tool for flat, steady efforts or as a rough baseline for training.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert my pace from min/km to min/mile?

Multiply the pace in min/km by 1.60934. For example, 5:00 min/km × 1.60934 = 8:03 min/mile. Conversely, divide min/mile by 1.60934 to get min/km.

What is a good running pace for a beginner?

A comfortable conversational pace for a beginner is often between 7:00 and 9:00 min/km (11:16 to 14:29 min/mile). This varies widely with age, fitness, and terrain. The best pace is one you can maintain while speaking in short sentences.

Why does my GPS watch show a different pace than this calculator?

GPS watches calculate pace from their own distance measurement, which can be slightly off due to signal drift, especially in urban canyons or under trees. They also use moving time, not elapsed time, so stopping for a traffic light won’t slow your average pace. This calculator uses the total time you enter, so it will match a race result better than a watch’s “moving pace.

Can I use this for cycling or swimming?

Yes, the math is the same for any distance-based activity. For cycling, you would enter distance in kilometers and time in minutes to get km/h. For swimming, you might use meters, but then convert to kilometers first (e.g., 1500 m = 1.5 km) to use this calculator directly.

How do I calculate pace for a half marathon or marathon?

Enter the race distance (21.0975 km for half marathon, 42.195 km for marathon) and your target finish time in minutes. The calculator will give you the average pace you need to hold. For a 2-hour half marathon, enter 120 minutes and 21.0975 km to get 5:41 min/km.
