Try Apple Intelligence Now? What to Check First

Card No. 06·26229 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Yes—if you have a supported Apple device and want to explore its writing, image, notification, or Siri features, you can turn on Apple Intelligence in Settings. First check your device, operating-system version, language, and available storage: the feature is not available on every iPhone, iPad, or Mac, and its tools vary by app and region.

What Apple Intelligence does

Apple Intelligence is Apple’s collection of generative AI features built into supported operating systems and apps. Depending on your device and software, it can help rewrite or proofread text, summarize selected content or notifications, create certain images and emoji, and handle some requests through Siri. Availability has expanded over time, so a feature shown in a demonstration may not be available on every device or in every language.

It is not a separate app that provides one universal chatbot experience. Instead, tools appear in places such as the writing controls, notification summaries, Image Playground, and Siri. Some tasks may use Apple’s on-device models; more demanding requests can involve Private Cloud Compute, and Siri can offer to use ChatGPT for certain requests. The route depends on the task and the software version.

Check whether your device is eligible

Apple Intelligence requires newer hardware than ordinary software updates do. Apple’s published compatibility information has included iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, the iPhone 16 family and later supported models, and iPads and Macs with an M-series chip. Support can change with new releases, so check Apple’s current compatibility page for your exact model rather than assuming that any device able to install the latest operating system qualifies.

Also check the operating system. Apple Intelligence features arrive through software updates, and the required release can differ by device and feature. Update through Settings on iPhone or iPad, or System Settings on Mac, then check Apple’s current requirements for the feature you want. A compatible model running older software may not show the controls.

  • iPhone or iPad: Open Settings, tap General, then Software Update.
  • Mac: Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, then General and Software Update.
  • Language: Confirm that both the device language and Siri language are supported and set as required. Supported languages have changed as Apple has expanded availability.

How to turn it on

On a supported iPhone or iPad, open Settings and look for Apple Intelligence & Siri. On a supported Mac, open System Settings and select Apple Intelligence & Siri. Follow the on-screen instructions to enable the feature and, if prompted, download the required models. Menu labels and setup details can vary with the operating-system version and region.

  1. Install the latest available operating-system update for your device.
  2. Check that the device and Siri languages meet Apple’s current requirements.
  3. Open Apple Intelligence & Siri in Settings or System Settings and switch on Apple Intelligence if the option appears.
  4. Keep the device connected to Wi-Fi and power while any required downloads finish. Make sure there is enough free storage.
  5. Try a feature in a compatible app, such as selecting text and opening Writing Tools, or asking Siri a supported request.

If you do not see the setting, do not assume that reinstalling an app will fix it. The most common explanations are an unsupported device, an older operating system, an unsupported language combination, regional availability, or a download that has not finished.

What you can try first

Start with a low-stakes task whose result you can review. In a supported writing field, select a few sentences and open Writing Tools to try proofreading, rewriting, or changing the tone. Review the returned text before using it: a rewrite may alter emphasis or omit details even when the original meaning seems straightforward.

Other features are more specific. Notification summaries can condense some alerts, but a summary is not a substitute for opening an important message. Image Playground can generate images from prompts and supported inputs, while Genmoji can create custom emoji-style images. Availability and controls vary by system version. Siri’s newer capabilities also roll out by release; an older request may still behave much as it did before.

These tools can be useful for drafts, summaries, and creative experiments, but they do not guarantee factual accuracy. Check names, dates, numbers, quotations, and instructions against a reliable source. Do not treat a generated summary as the complete original.

Privacy, storage, and limitations

Apple says many Apple Intelligence requests are processed on the device. When a request needs more processing, Private Cloud Compute can handle it on Apple silicon servers under Apple’s stated privacy design. Some tasks can involve an external service such as ChatGPT; when that happens, the relevant feature should indicate the handoff and may ask for permission. Check the on-screen disclosure and Apple’s current privacy documentation, especially before sending sensitive material.

Turning the feature on does not mean every request uses the same processing method. Avoid putting confidential work, personal records, or other sensitive information into a prompt unless you understand which service will receive it and have permission to share it. Privacy protections do not make generated output automatically correct or appropriate.

Downloads use device storage, and the amount needed can change as models and features change. If setup stalls, check free storage, use a stable Wi-Fi connection, connect to power, and allow time for the download. Some features may be unavailable in particular languages, regions, apps, or account configurations. Apple Intelligence may also be disabled by organizational device management or restrictions set on a device.

Should you try it?

It is reasonable to try if your device qualifies, the feature is available in your language, and you are comfortable reviewing generated results. Writing Tools are an easy starting point because you can compare the rewrite with your original. Summaries and image-generation features may be more useful if they fit your everyday habits, but they are optional rather than necessary for using an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

If the option is missing, check the compatibility list, update the operating system, confirm language settings, and revisit the setting after setup requirements are met. If you would rather not use the features, leave Apple Intelligence turned off; you can still use the rest of the device normally. You can also review the available controls in Apple Intelligence & Siri settings and disable the feature there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Apple Intelligence free?
Apple includes its features with supported devices and software rather than requiring a separate Apple Intelligence subscription. Third-party services or apps may have their own terms or charges; check those separately.

Why can’t I find Apple Intelligence in Settings?
Check device compatibility, install the latest available system update, confirm the device and Siri languages are supported, and check regional availability. On a managed device, an administrator may restrict the feature.

Does Apple Intelligence work on every iPhone?
No. It requires supported hardware, and many older iPhones do not qualify even if they can install a recent iOS update. Check Apple’s current compatibility list for the exact model.

Does Apple Intelligence send everything to the cloud?
No. Apple says many requests run on the device; some may use Private Cloud Compute or, for particular tasks, an external service such as ChatGPT. Check the disclosure for the feature you are using.

Can I turn Apple Intelligence off again?
Yes. Open Apple Intelligence & Siri in Settings on iPhone or iPad, or in System Settings on Mac, and use the available controls to turn it off.
