Unpair & Restore Apple Watch: Step-by-Step

Card No. 06·20563 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

To unpair and restore your Apple Watch, you use the Watch app on your iPhone (or the watch itself if you no longer have the iPhone). Unpairing automatically backs up the watch, and restoring re-pairs it to your iPhone and loads that backup. This process is essential when you get a new iPhone, sell your watch, or fix pairing problems.

What Unpairing Actually Does

When you unpair an Apple Watch from your iPhone, the two devices sever their encrypted Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connection. The watch is then reset to factory settings, which erases all content and settings on the watch itself. Crucially, the iPhone creates a fresh backup of your watch’s data right before the unpairing completes. This backup includes your app layouts, dock settings, watch faces, and most app data. Health and fitness data is synced to the iPhone and iCloud separately, so it is not lost.

Restoring is the reverse: you hold the watch near your iPhone, and the iPhone recognizes it and offers to pair it. During pairing, you choose “Restore from Backup and pick the most recent backup. The watch then re-installs your apps, settings, and watch faces. This is why unpairing is the recommended first step before sending your watch for repair or selling it.

How to Unpair Using the iPhone (Standard Method)

  1. Keep your iPhone and Apple Watch close together.
  2. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  3. Tap the “All Watches tab at the top of the screen.
  4. Tap the info button (i) next to the watch you want to unpair.
  5. Tap “Unpair Apple Watch.
  6. If your watch has a cellular plan, you will be asked whether to keep or remove the plan. Choose “Keep if you plan to re-pair later, or “Remove if you are selling or giving away the watch.
  7. Confirm the unpairing. The iPhone will create a backup and then erase the watch.

This method works for all Apple Watch models paired with an iPhone. The watch must be charged to at least 50% and within Bluetooth range of the iPhone during the process.

How to Unpair Directly on the Watch (No iPhone)

If you no longer have your iPhone, or the iPhone is not available, you can unpair directly on the watch. This does not create a backup, so any data that was not already synced to iCloud will be lost.

  1. On the watch, tap Settings → General → Reset.
  2. Tap “Erase All Content and Settings.
  3. Enter your passcode if prompted.
  4. If you have a cellular model, choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan.
  5. Confirm the erase. The watch will reset to factory settings.

After this, the watch is ready to pair with a new iPhone. It will appear in the list of available devices when you start the pairing process.

How to Restore (Re-pair) Your Apple Watch

  1. Keep your iPhone and watch close together, and make sure both have Bluetooth enabled.
  2. On the watch, press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  3. Open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap “Start Pairing.
  4. Point your iPhone’s camera at the animation on the watch face.
  5. When prompted, choose “Restore from Backup.
  6. Select the most recent backup (usually the one created during the unpairing).
  7. Wait for the restore to finish. This can take several minutes, and the watch may restart.

If you are setting up a new iPhone, you need to pair the watch to the new iPhone using this same process. The backup from your old iPhone is stored in iCloud, so it will be available after you sign in.

Common Problems and Fixes

  • Watch won’t unpair: Make sure the watch is charged above 50% and is near the iPhone. Restart both devices and try again.
  • Backup not showing up: The backup is created on the iPhone, not in iCloud. If you erased the iPhone, the backup is lost. To avoid this, always unpair before erasing the iPhone.
  • Pairing stuck at “Preparingâ€: This is normal and can take up to 30 minutes. Keep the devices close and do not interrupt.
  • Watch shows “Activation Lockâ€: This happens if the watch is still linked to your Apple ID. You must enter your Apple ID password to unlock it. If you are selling, unpair first to remove the lock.
  • Cellular plan issues: If you keep the plan during unpairing, you can re-add it later. If you remove it, you may need to contact your carrier to re-activate it.

What About Activation Lock?

Activation Lock is a security feature that prevents anyone else from using your watch if it is lost or stolen. It is tied to your Apple ID. When you unpair the watch using the iPhone method, Activation Lock is automatically disabled. If you erase the watch directly on the watch, Activation Lock remains enabled, so the next person cannot pair it without your Apple ID password. This is a common reason why a used watch might be “locked – the previous owner did not unpair it properly.

To remove Activation Lock manually, you can go to iCloud.com → Find My → Devices, select the watch, and click “Erase and then “Remove from Account. This is only possible if you know the Apple ID password. If you bought a used watch that is locked, you need to contact the previous owner to remove it.

When Should You Unpair vs. Just Reset?

Unpairing is the right choice when you plan to keep the watch and re-pair it later (e.g., after getting a new iPhone) or when you are selling it – because it creates a backup and removes Activation Lock. A direct reset on the watch is only for when you cannot use the iPhone method, and you accept losing the backup. If you are troubleshooting a minor issue, try restarting both devices first. If the watch is frozen, force restart it by holding the side button and the Digital Crown together for about 10 seconds.

There is also a “Reset Sync State option in the Watch app under General → Reset. This is useful when the watch and iPhone are out of sync, but it does not erase anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will unpairing delete my health data?

No. Health and fitness data is stored on the iPhone and in iCloud, not on the watch itself. Unpairing backs up the watch’s settings and app data, and your health history remains intact.

How long does the backup take?

Usually 1-3 minutes, depending on how much data is on the watch. The watch will show a progress ring, and the iPhone will show a status message.

Can I use the same watch with two iPhones?

No, an Apple Watch can only be paired to one iPhone at a time. You must unpair from the first iPhone before pairing to a second.

What if I forgot my watch passcode?

You cannot unpair without the passcode if the watch is locked. You must erase the watch using the Watch app on the iPhone (which will ask for the Apple ID password) or use the direct reset method on the watch, which also requires the passcode. If you truly forgot it, you need to send the watch to Apple support for a forced reset.

Does unpairing affect my Apple Music or podcasts?

No, those are stored in the cloud and will re-download when you re-pair. The same applies to photos and other iCloud content.
