Google Assistant Family Bell lets you schedule spoken announcements and routines on your Nest speakers, Smart Displays, and Android devices. You set a time and a message, and the Assistant announces it aloud, making it useful for home-school schedules, chore reminders, and daily family routines. This guide explains how to set up Family Bell, what it can and cannot do, and how to fix common issues.

What Is Family Bell and How It Works

Family Bell is a feature built into the Google Home app that turns your Assistant-enabled speakers and displays into a family announcement system. Instead of a silent notification on a phone, Family Bell speaks the reminder out loud at the scheduled time, so everyone in the room hears it. You can create one-time bells or repeating schedules for specific days of the week.

When a bell rings, the device plays a short chime followed by your custom message, such as “Time to start math class or “Please set the table for dinner. On Smart Displays like the Nest Hub, the message also appears on the screen. Family Bell works alongside Google Assistant routines, but it is a separate feature focused specifically on spoken announcements.

How to Set Up Family Bell in the Google Home App

Setting up a Family Bell takes about a minute. You need the Google Home app on your phone or tablet, and at least one Assistant-enabled speaker or display linked to your home. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the Google Home app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Tap the “+ icon in the top-left corner, then tap “Family Bell.
  3. Tap “Create a Family Bell.
  4. Choose which device or devices will play the announcement. You can select a single speaker, a group, or all devices in the home.
  5. Type your announcement message, for example “Time to brush teeth.
  6. Set the time using the clock picker.
  7. Choose whether it repeats: once, daily, or on specific days of the week.
  8. Tap “Save at the top-right.

Your new bell appears in the Family Bell list. To test it, tap the bell and then tap “Play test sound. You can edit or delete any bell by tapping its entry and choosing the edit or trash icon.

Using Family Bell on Different Devices

Family Bell works on most Google Assistant speakers and Smart Displays, including Nest Audio, Nest Mini, Nest Hub, and Nest Hub Max. It also works on Android phones and tablets that have the Google Assistant enabled, but the announcement appears as a notification rather than a spoken message unless the device is in a home group. On iPhones and iPads, Family Bell is not supported—you can only manage bells from the Google Home app, but the announcements will not play on the phone itself.

If you have multiple devices in the same room, you can assign the bell to a specific speaker group. For example, you might want the bell to play only in the kitchen during breakfast, and only in the kids’ bedroom at bedtime. To do this, create a speaker group in the Google Home app first, then select that group when creating the bell.

Common Problems and How to Fix Them

Family Bell sometimes fails to ring, rings at the wrong time, or rings on the wrong device. Here are the most common issues and their fixes:

  • Bell doesn’t ring: Make sure the device is online and has volume turned up. Check that the bell is not paused (the pause icon is a clock with a slash). Also verify that the device’s time zone is correct in the Google Home app.
  • Bell rings on the wrong device: If you selected “all devices, the bell plays on every device in the home. Edit the bell and choose a specific device or group instead.
  • Bell rings at the wrong time: Check the device’s time zone and the time zone of the Google Home app. If you travel with a portable speaker, the time zone may have changed.
  • Bell message is not spoken: Some devices may only play a chime if the message is very short. Try a longer message or check that the device’s language is set to the same language as your message.
  • Bell disappears: If you delete the Google Home app or switch homes, your bells are lost. Make sure you are in the correct home in the app.

If none of these work, restart the speaker by unplugging it for 10 seconds, then plug it back in. Also check that the Google Home app is updated to the latest version.

Family Bell vs. Regular Routines

Family Bell is often confused with Google Assistant Routines, but they are different. A Routine can trigger multiple actions at once—like playing music, turning on lights, and sending a message—while a Family Bell is just a spoken announcement. However, you can make a Routine that includes a Family Bell as one of its actions. For example, a “Good morning routine could turn on the lights, play the news, and then ring a Family Bell saying “Time to get ready for school.

To add a Family Bell to a Routine, open the Google Home app, go to Routines, create a new routine, and under “Add action search for “Family Bell. You can then select an existing bell or create a new one. This is useful if you want the bell to be part of a larger sequence of actions.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Family Bell

Family Bell is most effective when you use it consistently. Here are some practical ways to use it:

  • School schedules: Ring at 8:00 AM for “Time to start math, then at 9:00 AM for “Time for reading.
  • Chores: Ring at 5:00 PM with “Please take out the trash.
  • Bedtime: Ring at 8:30 PM with “Time to brush teeth and get in pajamas.
  • Medication reminders: Ring at specific times to remind adults to take medication, but note that Family Bell is not a substitute for medical devices.
  • Family meetings: Ring at 6:30 PM with “Family meeting in 10 minutes.

You can also use the “Announce feature separately by saying “Hey Google, announce dinner is ready, but Family Bell is better for scheduled, recurring reminders because it doesn’t require you to speak each time.

Privacy and Safety Considerations

Family Bell announcements are played out loud, so anyone in the room can hear them. Be careful not to include sensitive information like passwords or personal identification numbers in your messages. Also, Family Bell is not a security feature—it cannot be used to unlock doors or arm alarms. If you have guests or are away from home, you can pause all bells by opening the Google Home app, going to Family Bell, and tapping the pause icon next to “All bells.

Google stores your Family Bell settings in your Google account, and you can view or delete them at any time in the Google Home app. If you share your home with others, they may also see and edit the bells if they have access to the home in the app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Family Bell work on my phone? Yes, but only on Android phones with the Google Assistant. The announcement appears as a notification, not a spoken message, unless the phone is set up as a speaker in a home group. On iPhones, Family Bell does not play at all.

Can I use Family Bell to play music or start a routine? No, Family Bell is only for spoken announcements. To play music or trigger multiple actions, use a Routine and include a Family Bell as one of the actions.

Why is my Family Bell not ringing on time? Check the device’s time zone and the time zone in the Google Home app. Also make sure the device is online and the bell is not paused. If you have multiple homes, verify you are in the correct home.

Can I schedule a Family Bell for a specific date in the future? No, Family Bell only supports one-time (today) or repeating schedules. For a future one-time reminder, use Google Calendar or a Routine instead.

Does Family Bell work with Spotify or other music services? No, Family Bell is independent of music services. It only plays the chime and your message.

Can I have multiple bells at the same time? Yes, you can create as many bells as you want, even at the same time. They will all play simultaneously on their assigned devices, which can be confusing, so it’s best to stagger times.
