V Rising Servants Guide: Convert & Use

Card No. 06·21424 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

To convert and use servants in V Rising, you must first build a Servant Coffin, then dominate a human enemy with the Dominate Human ability, and finally assign that human to the coffin to turn them into a servant. Once converted, servants can be sent on missions to gather resources and defend your castle, and you can even play as your servant to explore the world during daylight hours.

Background: What Are Servants?

Servants are a core mechanic introduced in V Rising’s early access as part of the castle-building and progression systems. They are essentially human NPCs that you convert into loyal minions. Unlike simple guards, servants are persistent characters that can level up, be equipped with gear, and be dispatched on timed missions to collect valuable resources. They serve as both a defensive force for your base and a way to automate resource gathering, which is crucial in the late game when you need large quantities of rare materials like Ghost Crystal or Dark Silver.

Each servant has a class (e.g., Warrior, Rogue, Brute, Scholar) and a blood type (e.g., Worker, Warrior, Rogue, Brute, Creature, Scholar) with a blood purity percentage. These factors determine their combat effectiveness and mission success rates. Higher blood purity servants are more powerful and can handle harder missions.

How to Convert a Servant

Converting a servant requires a specific process that involves several steps. You need to be at least level 45 (the ability is unlocked after defeating Quincey the Bandit King) and have the necessary resources to craft the required items.

  1. Research the Servant Coffin: Unlock the Servant Coffin recipe from the Research Desk or Study (depending on your game version). It requires 12 Planks, 4 Grave Dust, and 4 Sulphur.
  2. Build the Coffin: Place the Servant Coffin inside your castle. You need a room with a ceiling (a floor above it) for the coffin to function.
  3. Learn Dominate Human: This ability is unlocked by defeating Quincey the Bandit King (level 40 boss). It is a spell that you must have equipped in your spell bar.
  4. Find a Human: Locate a human NPC in the world, such as a bandit, a villager from Farbane Woods, or a soldier from Dunley Farmlands. They can be found in camps, villages, or roaming the roads.
  5. Weaken the Human: Lower the human’s health to below 20% (the health bar will turn red). Be careful not to kill them. Use a weapon with low damage or your fists.
  6. Cast Dominate Human: With the human weakened, cast the Dominate Human spell on them. A channeling bar will appear; you must complete it without taking damage or moving.
  7. Interact with the Coffin: After domination, the human will follow you. Lead them to your Servant Coffin and interact with the coffin to place them inside. This initiates the conversion process, which takes 2 in-game hours (about 4 real minutes).

Once converted, the servant will emerge from the coffin. You can then name them, equip them, and give them orders.

Choosing the Right Servant

Not all humans are created equal. When selecting a human to convert, consider their class and blood quality.

  • Class: Warriors and Brutes have higher health and melee damage, making them better for defense. Rogues have higher critical chance and are good for missions that require stealth. Scholars have magic abilities and are useful for gathering certain resources. The class determines the servant’s base stats and the type of gear they can use.
  • Blood Type: This is more important than class in the long run. A servant’s blood type provides a bonus to certain activities. For example, a Worker blood type increases resource gathering from missions, while a Warrior blood type increases combat damage. The blood purity (from 1% to 100%) multiplies the effect. A 100% Scholar blood servant will gather books and scrolls much faster than a 50% one.
  • Level: The servant’s starting level is based on the human’s level when you dominate them. Higher-level humans (e.g., from Cursed Forest or Silverlight Hills) will become higher-level servants, but they are harder to dominate. You can level up servants by sending them on missions or by defeating enemies while playing as them.

For early game, focus on converting any human with high blood purity (above 50%) that you can find. As you progress, you’ll want to be more selective, targeting specific blood types for specific tasks.

Using Servants: Missions and Defense

Servants have two primary uses: sent on missions and defending your castle.

Missions: Interact with a servant and select “Send on Mission.” You can choose from a list of available missions, each with a suggested level and duration (e.g., 2 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours). The mission success chance depends on the servant’s level, gear, and blood purity. If successful, the servant returns with loot such as resources, gear, and even rare items. If the mission fails, the servant may return injured or not at all (permanent death). You can send up to 3 servants on missions at a time, but this number can be increased with the Castle Heart upgrade.

Defense: Servants can be assigned to patrol your castle grounds. They will attack any intruders. To assign a servant to defense, interact with them and select “Set as Guard.” They will stand near the coffin and fight enemies that come within range. You can have multiple servants guarding, but they are not as effective as a well-designed castle with traps and walls. They are best used as a first line of defense against small raids.

Playing as Your Servant

One of the most useful features of servants is the ability to take control of them. Interact with a servant and select “Take Control.” Your vampire will remain in the coffin, and you will control the servant in the world. This has several advantages:

  • Daylight Exploration: Servants do not burn in sunlight. You can explore the world during the day without taking damage.
  • Gathering: You can gather resources as the servant, though you cannot use your vampire abilities. This is useful for gathering basic materials like wood and stone.
  • Leveling: Killing enemies as the servant grants experience to that servant, helping them level up.

However, if the servant dies while you control it, you lose that servant permanently. Be careful when engaging in combat. Also, you cannot use your vampire spells or blood magic while controlling a servant.

Common Problems and Mistakes

Many players make mistakes when dealing with servants. Here are some common issues and how to avoid them:

  • Killing the human before domination: The most common mistake. Use a low-damage weapon and stop attacking when the health bar turns red.
  • Not having a ceiling: The Servant Coffin requires a room with a ceiling. If you place it outside or in a room without a ceiling, it will not work.
  • Dominating a low-quality human: Wasting your time on a 20% blood human is not worth it. It’s better to wait for a higher-quality one, especially in the late game.
  • Sending servants on missions they can’t handle: Always check the mission difficulty. A servant that is 10 levels below the recommended level will likely fail and may die.
  • Not equipping servants: Gear improves a servant’s stats significantly. Craft or find gear for them, especially if you plan to send them on hard missions.

Costs and Requirements

Converting and maintaining servants has costs beyond the initial coffin. You need to provide them with gear, which can be crafted or found. The gear must match their class (e.g., a Warrior uses swords and heavy armor, a Rogue uses daggers and light armor). You also need to keep your Castle Heart supplied with blood essence to sustain the servants; if the castle heart runs out, the servants will become inactive and eventually die.

Missions also have a cost in terms of time and risk. Longer missions yield better rewards but also have a higher chance of failure. You can increase the success chance by sending a servant with a matching blood type (e.g., a Worker blood type for gathering missions).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert any human NPC?

No, only human NPCs that are not unique or named (like bosses) can be dominated. Standard enemies like bandits, soldiers, and villagers are all valid targets. You cannot dominate creatures or supernatural beings.

What is the best blood type for a servant?

It depends on the role. For missions, Worker blood is best for gathering resources, while Warrior or Brute blood is best for combat missions. For defense, any high-purity blood is fine. Scholar blood is good for researching and gathering books. In general, higher purity (above 80%) is always better.

Can I have more than one servant?

Yes, you can have up to 3 servants initially, and this can be increased to 5 or more with the Castle Heart upgrade (requires a higher tier Castle Heart). Each servant requires its own coffin, so you’ll need to build multiple coffins.

Do servants need to eat or be fed?

No, servants do not need to be fed. However, they do require the castle to have blood essence. If the castle heart runs out of blood essence, the servants will become inactive and eventually die. Always keep your blood essence topped up.

Can I heal my servant?

Yes, you can heal a servant by interacting with them and selecting “Heal.” This costs blood essence. Alternatively, you can feed them a blood potion or use a Vermin Nest to heal them over time.

What happens if a servant fails a mission?

If a servant fails a mission, they may return injured (with reduced health) or they may die permanently. The chance of death depends on the mission difficulty and the servant’s stats. You can reduce the risk by sending well-equipped servants on missions they are appropriately leveled for.
