Valheim Materials Recipes List: Crafting Guide

Card No. 06·17178 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

This guide compiles the essential crafting recipes for all materials in Valheim, from basic wood and stone to advanced metals like black metal and linen thread. It covers what you need to craft each material, where to find the ingredients, and the workbench or forge level required, so you can plan your progression efficiently and avoid wasted trips.

Ingredients

  • Wood (any type: Wood, Fine Wood, Core Wood, Ancient Bark)
  • Stone (any type: Stone, Flint, Obsidian)
  • Metals (Copper, Tin, Iron, Silver, Black Metal, Bronze)
  • Leather scraps, Deer hide, Wolf pelt, Lox pelt
  • Resin, Bone fragments, Surtling cores, Guck, Ymir flesh
  • Feathers, Honey, Bloodbag, Freeze gland, Chain
  • Linen thread, Silk, Needle, Crystal, Dragon egg

Instructions

  1. Smelt raw ores: Place Copper ore, Tin ore, Iron scrap, Silver ore, or Black metal scrap in a Smelter or Blast Furnace to produce bars. Each bar requires 1 ore and 2 coal (except Black metal, which uses 1 scrap and 1 coal).
  2. Combine metals: Use a Forge to combine 2 Copper and 1 Tin to make 1 Bronze. Combine 1 Iron and 1 Fine Wood to make 1 Iron Nails. Combine 1 Black metal and 1 Fine Wood to make 1 Black metal Nails.
  3. Process leather: Use a Tanning Rack to turn 5 Deer hide into 1 Leather scraps, or 2 Wolf pelt into 1 Wolf pelt (already tanned). Lox pelt is used directly.
  4. Refine wood: Use a Wood Cutter to turn 1 Wood into 1 Coal. Use a Sawmill to turn 1 Fine Wood into 1 Wood (planks) or 1 Core Wood into 1 Wood.
  5. Extract resin and other resources: Kill Greydwarfs for Resin, Surtlings for Surtling cores, and Leeches for Bloodbags. Freeze glands drop from Drakes, and Chains drop from Wraiths and Fulings.
  6. Weave linen: Use a Spinning Wheel to turn 5 Flax into 1 Linen thread. Flax is grown from Flax seeds found in the Plains.
  7. Create specialized materials: Combine 1 Stone and 1 Flint to make 1 Sharpening stone. Combine 1 Wood and 1 Resin to make 1 Torch (not a material, but a craftable item).
  8. Craft with the right station: Most materials are crafted at a Workbench, Forge, or their specific station (e.g., Tanning Rack, Spinning Wheel). Upgrade the station to the required level to unlock all recipes.

Tips

  • Always carry a portal: When exploring for materials, set up a portal at your base and carry the materials for a second portal with you. This lets you return quickly to drop off loot and then continue exploring.
  • Mark resource nodes: Use map markers for Copper, Tin, and Iron deposits. They are finite and respawn only after a long time, so tracking them saves you from wandering.
  • Don’t smelt too much: Smelt only what you need for immediate crafting. Bars are heavy, and you can always smelt more later.
  • Use the right tool: A Pickaxe for ores, an Axe for wood, and a Scythe for Flax. Using the wrong tool yields nothing.

Serving Suggestions

Use these materials to craft essential gear: Bronze armor for the Swamp, Iron armor for the Mountains, and Padded armor for the Plains. Weapons like the Frostner (requires Ymir flesh and Freeze gland) and the Blackmetal Sword are top-tier. Also craft building pieces like the Stonecutter (requires Iron) and the Artisan Table (requires Dragon egg) to unlock advanced construction.

Variations

You can substitute materials in some recipes: use Core Wood instead of Fine Wood for certain building pieces (like the portal frame). For tools, the Bronze axe and Iron axe are interchangeable in function but differ in durability and damage. For arrows, you can use Wood, Flint, Fire, Poison, or Frost arrows, each requiring different materials (Resin, Bloodbag, Freeze gland, etc.).

Storage and Reheating

Store materials in chests, but note that some materials stack up to 50, while others like bars stack to 30. Use the Ward to protect your base from other players. Materials do not spoil, but you should keep them organized by type (e.g., metals, wood, leather) to avoid confusion. If you need to move large quantities, use a Cart or a Longship with a storage hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get Iron? Iron is obtained by smelting Iron scrap, which is found in Sunken Crypts in the Swamp. You need a Swamp Key to open the crypts, which drops from The Elder boss.

What is the best way to get Silver? Silver ore is found in the Mountains, usually under the ground. Use a Wishbone (from Bonemass) to locate it, then mine it with an Iron pickaxe or better.

Why can’t I craft Black metal items? You need a Blast Furnace to smelt Black metal scrap, and a Forge with a level 4 upgrade (Forge cooler) to craft Black metal weapons and armor.

How do I get Linen thread? Linen thread is made from Flax, which you grow from Flax seeds found in Fuling villages in the Plains. Plant them in cultivated soil, then harvest and spin at a Spinning Wheel.

Can I repair materials? No, materials themselves cannot be repaired, but items crafted from them can be repaired at a Workbench or Forge for a small cost in wood or stone.

What is the rarest material? Dragon eggs are rare and only found in the Mountains. They are used to summon the Moder boss, so keep them safe.
