This guide explains how to defeat the Iron Marshall boss in Valor Mortis, covering the recommended gear, strategy, and attack patterns. You will learn the exact tactics to survive its devastating charge and deal consistent damage to secure the victory.

Formula

The calculator above estimates whether your current damage output is sufficient to defeat the Iron Marshall within a given time. The core formula is:

Total Damage = Fight Duration (seconds) × Damage per Second (DPS)

And the remaining health after that time is:

Remaining Health = Boss Health − Total Damage

Where:

  • Fight Duration (t) – the time you expect to survive, in seconds.
  • Damage per Second (d) – your average sustained damage output, in HP per second.
  • Boss Health (h) – the Iron Marshall’s total hit points (default 25,000, but this can vary based on your game version or difficulty).

The result shows if you will kill the boss before you run out of time or get wiped.

Worked Example

Using the default values from the calculator: a fight duration of 180 seconds, a DPS of 150, and a boss health of 25,000.

  1. Total Damage = 180 sec × 150 DPS = 27,000 HP.
  2. Remaining Health = 25,000 HP − 27,000 HP = −2,000 HP.

Since the remaining health is negative, you would defeat the boss with 2,000 damage to spare. This means your DPS is sufficient for a 3-minute fight.

Understanding the Iron Marshall

The Iron Marshall is a heavy melee boss found in the later stages of Valor Mortis. It is characterized by its massive health pool and two distinct phases. In the first phase (above 50% health), it uses slow, telegraphed swings and a devastating charge attack. In the second phase (below 50%), it enrages, increasing its attack speed and adding a shockwave AoE. The boss is resistant to crowd control effects, so relying on stuns is not effective.

Pre-Fight Preparation

Before engaging, ensure you have the following:

  • Weapon: A high-damage single-target weapon, preferably with a damage-over-time effect (like bleed or poison).
  • Armor: The heaviest armor you can wear while still maintaining a medium roll (if you are a melee build). For ranged, prioritize mobility.
  • Consumables: Carry at least 10 health potions and 5 stamina potions. Also bring a fire resistance buff if available.
  • Abilities: Equip a dash or dodge ability with a short cooldown. A shield is useful but not mandatory.

Phase 1 Strategy (100% – 50% Health)

In this phase, the Iron Marshall is slow but hits hard. The key is to stay close and circle it, but always be ready to dodge its attacks.

  • Basic Swing: The boss raises its weapon overhead and slams down. This has a long wind-up. Dodge to the side (not backward) just as it starts to swing.
  • Charge: The boss lowers its shoulder and charges in a straight line. This is telegraphed by a loud clank and a brief pause. Dodge perpendicular to the charge line. After the charge, the boss is stunned for 2 seconds – use this window to attack.
  • Stomp: If you are behind the boss for too long, it will stomp, creating a small shockwave. Jump or dodge to avoid it.

Attack pattern: Hit 2-3 times after a dodge, then back off. Do not get greedy; the boss’s recovery time is short.

Phase 2 Strategy (Below 50% Health)

At 50% health, the Iron Marshall will roar and its armor will glow red. It gains a 30% attack speed increase and a new AoE attack.

  • Shockwave Slam: The boss slams its weapon into the ground, creating a radial shockwave. This has a longer wind-up than the basic swing. Run away from the boss or dodge through the wave (timing is tight).
  • Triple Swing: A three-hit combo that starts with a horizontal slash, then a vertical slash, then a spin. The spin has a wide radius. Block or dodge all three hits – do not try to attack between the first two hits.

In this phase, the boss is more aggressive, so you will have fewer opportunities to attack. Focus on surviving and landing hits only after a dodge or when the boss is recovering from the shockwave slam.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

  • Panic Rolling: Rolling too early or too late. Watch the boss’s weapon, not its body, to time your dodge.
  • Not Managing Stamina: If you run out of stamina, you cannot dodge. Keep an eye on your stamina bar and never go below 30%.
  • Ignoring Adds: In some versions of the fight, the Iron Marshall summons small minions at 75% and 25% health. Kill them quickly – they are weak but can stagger you at a bad moment.
  • Using a Slow Weapon: A greatsword or hammer may hit hard, but the recovery time is too long. Use a one-handed weapon or a fast spear.

Alternative Strategies

If the melee approach is not working, consider these alternatives:

  • Ranged Kiting: Use a bow or crossbow and keep your distance. The boss’s charge is telegraphed, so you can easily dodge it. This is slower but safer. Aim for the head for bonus damage.
  • Co-op: With two players, one can tank the boss while the other attacks from behind. The boss will switch targets, so the tank must be ready to dodge.
  • Cheese Spot: In the arena, there is a broken pillar on the left side. You can jump on it and the boss cannot reach you with its melee attacks. However, it will use its charge to knock you off, so this is not a permanent solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best weapon to use against the Iron Marshall?

A fast one-handed weapon with a bleed effect is generally the best. The bleed does percentage-based damage, which is effective against the boss’s high health pool. Spears also work well because they allow you to attack from a safer distance.

How do I dodge the charge attack?

The charge is telegraphed by a loud clank and the boss lowering its shoulder. Wait until it starts moving, then dodge to the left or right. Dodging backward will not work because the boss has a long hitbox.

Can I parry the Iron Marshall?

Yes, you can parry its basic swing and the first hit of the triple swing. However, the timing is very strict, and a failed parry will leave you vulnerable. It is safer to dodge unless you are confident.

What is the recommended level to fight the Iron Marshall?

Most players are around level 40-50 with a +6 weapon. If you are below that, you will deal too little damage and the fight will drag on, increasing the chance of mistakes.

Does the Iron Marshall have any weaknesses?

It is weak to fire damage, so using a fire enchantment or fire bombs can speed up the fight. It is also vulnerable to stagger when its stamina is depleted, but this is hard to achieve.

What happens if I die during the fight?

You will respawn at the last bonfire or checkpoint. The boss will retain the health it had when you died, so you can go back and continue the fight. This is a common mechanic in souls-like games.
