Veeam Service Provider Console: What It Is

Card No. 06·52058 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Veeam Service Provider Console (VSPC) is a centralized management platform that lets managed service providers (MSPs) monitor, manage, and back up their customers’ Veeam environments from a single web interface. You enter your customer’s Veeam Backup & Replication server details, and the console gives you a dashboard showing backup job status, storage usage, and license consumption across all tenants. It replaces the older Veeam Availability Console and is the standard tool for MSPs delivering Backup as a Service (BaaS) or Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) with Veeam.

Background: Why VSPC Exists

Before VSPC, an MSP managing multiple customers had to log into each customer’s Veeam Backup & Replication console separately. That was slow, error-prone, and made it hard to spot problems across the whole client base. Veeam introduced the Availability Console in 2017, then rebranded and expanded it into the Service Provider Console in 2019. The core idea is multi-tenancy: one console, many isolated customer environments, with role-based access so you only see what you’re supposed to.

VSPC is not a backup product itself. It orchestrates and reports on backups that Veeam Backup & Replication (or Veeam Agent) already performs. You still need a backup server at each customer site or in your own data center; VSPC just gives you a single pane of glass to manage them all.

How VSPC Works: Architecture and Components

VSPC has two main parts: the VSPC server and the VSPC backup infrastructure.

  • VSPC Server – A Windows or Linux server (or VM) that hosts the web portal, REST API, and database (Microsoft SQL Server or PostgreSQL). This is where you log in and where all reporting data is aggregated.
  • VSPC Backup Infrastructure – A component installed on a Windows machine that acts as a gateway between the VSPC server and the customers’ Veeam backup servers. It handles tasks like deploying backup agents, running backup jobs, and copying data to service provider storage.

You connect each customer’s Veeam Backup & Replication server to VSPC by adding it as a managed server. The console then discovers all backup jobs, repositories, and proxies, and starts collecting data. For agent-based backups (Veeam Agent for Windows/Linux), VSPC can deploy agents to endpoints and manage them centrally.

The web UI is divided into sections: Dashboard (overall health), Backups (job status, restore points), Replicas (for disaster recovery), Agents (managed endpoints), Inventory (servers, VMs, files), and Billing (usage metering). You can also create custom reports and schedule them via email.

Key Features and What You Can Do With It

  • Multi-tenant monitoring – See all your customers’ backup jobs in one place, with color-coded status (green/yellow/red) and drill-down to see which VM failed and why.
  • Backup job management – Create, edit, start, or stop backup jobs remotely without logging into each customer’s Veeam console.
  • Restore portals – Give your customers a self-service portal where they can restore their own files, VMs, or even Microsoft 365 items, with your approval if you want.
  • Agent management – Deploy Veeam Agent to endpoints, assign backup policies, and monitor their status.
  • Billing and metering – Track storage usage per customer and export usage data to your own billing system (the console itself doesn’t invoice).
  • Cloud connect integration – If you use Veeam Cloud Connect, VSPC can manage the service provider side of that, including tenant quotas and connectivity.

How to Choose the Right Version and Deployment

VSPC is free to download, but you must be a Veeam service provider partner to use it in production. The license is tied to your partner agreement, and you pay based on the number of workloads you protect (VMs, servers, agents). There is no separate cost for the console itself.

Deployment options:

  • On-premises – Install the VSPC server on your own hardware or a VM. This gives you full control over data and access.
  • Veeam Cloud Connect – If you already use Veeam’s cloud services, VSPC can be hosted by Veeam (multi-tenant SaaS). This is simpler but less customizable.

When choosing, consider: how many customers you have (VSPC handles thousands of tenants), whether you need the self-service restore portal (requires a public IP and SSL certificate), and whether your customers’ Veeam versions are compatible (VSPC supports Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 4 and later, plus Veeam Agent 3.0.2 and later).

Common Problems and Troubleshooting

Most issues with VSPC fall into a few categories:

  • Connection failures – The VSPC server can’t reach a customer’s Veeam server. Check firewall rules (ports 443 for HTTPS, 9392 for Veeam Backup Service), DNS resolution, and credentials. The VSPC server must be able to resolve the customer’s server by hostname.
  • Agent deployment fails – Often due to missing credentials, wrong architecture (32-bit vs 64-bit), or the endpoint not being reachable. Verify the agent install package is available in the VSPC server’s repository.
  • Restore portal not loading – The portal requires a valid SSL certificate on the VSPC server. If you use a self-signed cert, browsers will block it. Use a public CA-signed certificate or add the self-signed cert to the client’s trusted store.
  • Backup jobs stuck – If a job appears stuck in VSPC, check the actual Veeam server’s job session. Sometimes the job is waiting for a resource (like a tape drive) that VSPC can’t see.

For any issue, the first step is to check the VSPC logs (located in C:\ProgramData\Veeam\Backup\ServiceProvider on Windows). The logs are verbose and usually point to the exact error.

Comparison: VSPC vs. Veeam Backup & Replication Console

Many people confuse VSPC with the standard Veeam Backup & Replication console. Here’s the difference:

  • Veeam Backup & Replication Console – The management tool for a single backup server. It’s installed on the backup server or a workstation and connects to that server’s SQL database. It gives you full control over jobs, repositories, and restores for that one environment.
  • VSPC – A web-based tool that aggregates multiple Veeam Backup & Replication servers. It doesn’t replace the B&R console; it sits on top of it. You still use B&R for advanced configuration (like tape jobs or storage tiering), but VSPC handles day-to-day monitoring and basic operations.

If you manage only one customer, you don’t need VSPC. If you manage several, VSPC saves you from logging into each console. It also adds features that don’t exist in B&R, like the self-service portal and usage metering.

Costs and Licensing

VSPC itself is free, but you must be a Veeam service provider partner. The partner program has tiers (Silver, Gold, Platinum) based on your annual revenue and the number of certified engineers. You pay for the workloads you protect, not for the console. Pricing is per workload per month, and it varies depending on the edition (Standard or Enterprise) and whether you choose Veeam Cloud Connect or on-premises.

There are no hidden costs for the console, but you’ll need to budget for the infrastructure to run it: a server with at least 4 GB RAM, 2 vCPUs, and 50 GB disk for the VSPC server, plus additional resources for the backup infrastructure component. For a small MSP, a single VM is enough.

Safety and Security Considerations

Because VSPC gives you access to all your customers’ backup data, security is critical. Follow these practices:

  • Use HTTPS – Always access the VSPC web portal over HTTPS. Veeam supports TLS 1.2 and 1.3. Disable HTTP if possible.
  • Strong authentication – Use complex passwords and enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for all VSPC admin accounts. VSPC supports TOTP-based 2FA.
  • Least privilege – Create separate user accounts for each technician and assign them only the roles they need (e.g., backup operator, restore operator, viewer).
  • Network isolation – Place the VSPC server in a DMZ or a dedicated management VLAN. Don’t expose it directly to the internet unless you have a proper firewall and WAF.
  • Backup the VSPC server – The VSPC database contains configuration and history. Back it up regularly, and test restores.
  • Encryption – If you use Veeam Cloud Connect, data is encrypted in transit and at rest. For on-premises, ensure your storage is encrypted (e.g., BitLocker or LUKS).

Also, be aware that VSPC does not encrypt backups itself; encryption is configured in Veeam Backup & Replication. Make sure your customers’ jobs have encryption enabled if required.

Alternatives to VSPC

If VSPC doesn’t fit your needs, there are other ways to manage multi-tenant Veeam environments:

  • Veeam Backup & Replication with multiple servers – Just log into each console separately. Works for a handful of customers, but doesn’t scale.
  • Veeam ONE – A monitoring and reporting tool for Veeam. It can monitor multiple backup servers, but it’s not multi-tenant and doesn’t have a self-service portal.
  • Third-party RMM tools – ConnectWise Automate, Kaseya, or NinjaOne can integrate with Veeam via APIs and give you a dashboard, but they lack VSPC’s deep backup-specific features like restore portals.
  • Veeam Cloud Connect for Service Providers – If you want to offer DRaaS, this is the underlying technology, and VSPC is the management layer for it. You can’t use Cloud Connect without a service provider console.

For most MSPs, VSPC is the right choice because it’s purpose-built for Veeam and free for partners. The main reason to look elsewhere is if you need a unified dashboard across multiple vendors (e.g., Veeam and Commvault), in which case a generic RMM might be better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Veeam Service Provider Console free?

Yes, the console is free to download and use, but you must be a Veeam service provider partner. The partner program requires an application and agreement; once accepted, you get access to VSPC and other partner tools. You pay for the workloads you protect, not for the console itself.

Can I use VSPC for my own company’s backups?

Technically, yes, but it’s overkill. VSPC is designed for multi-tenant scenarios. For a single company, the standard Veeam Backup & Replication console is simpler and gives you all the features you need. Using VSPC for a single site adds unnecessary complexity.

Does VSPC work with Veeam Agent for Microsoft 365?

VSPC can manage Veeam Agent for Microsoft 365 backups, but only if you connect the Microsoft 365 backup server to VSPC as a managed server. The agent for Microsoft 365 is a separate product, and VSPC supports it as of version 4.0. You can monitor jobs and restore items from the portal, but some advanced settings must be configured in the Microsoft 365 backup console.

What are the system requirements for VSPC?

For the VSPC server, Veeam recommends at least 4 GB RAM, 2 vCPUs, and 50 GB free disk space for the database and logs. The server must run Windows Server 2012 R2 or later (or Linux with PostgreSQL). The VSPC backup infrastructure component requires a Windows machine with 4 GB RAM and 2 vCPUs. You also need a supported SQL Server (Express is fine for small deployments).

Can I give my customers access to VSPC?

Yes, VSPC has a built-in self-service restore portal. You can enable it per customer, and they’ll get a URL where they can log in and restore their own files, VMs, or Microsoft 365 items. You control what they can restore and whether restores require your approval.

Does VSPC support multiple Veeam Backup & Replication versions?

VSPC supports Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 4 and later, including v10, v11, and v12. However, features like agent management may require newer versions. It’s best to keep your customers’ Veeam servers updated to a version that’s compatible with your VSPC version. Check Veeam’s compatibility matrix for exact details.
