Walkie Talkie Apple Watch: How It Works

Card No. 06·6785 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

The Apple Watch Walkie-Talkie feature lets you send instant voice messages to another Apple Watch user, like a walkie-talkie, using the built-in app. You speak into your watch and the other person hears it on theirs, almost in real time. This article explains how the feature works, how to set it up, and what to do when it doesn’t work.

What Is Walkie-Talkie on Apple Watch?

Walkie-Talkie is a built-in app on Apple Watch that allows you to have real-time voice conversations with other Apple Watch users. It was introduced with watchOS 5 in 2018 and works over Wi-Fi or cellular when you’re away from your iPhone. The feature uses FaceTime Audio to transmit your voice, so both you and your friend need an Apple Watch with FaceTime Audio support (Apple Watch Series 1 or later, except Apple Watch SE 1st generation).

Unlike a phone call, Walkie-Talkie is push-to-talk: you press and hold the green button to speak, and the other person hears you immediately. It’s designed for quick, short messages—like checking in with a friend or asking a quick question—not for long conversations.

How to Set Up Walkie-Talkie

Setting up Walkie-Talkie is simple, but there are a few prerequisites:

  • Both users need an Apple Watch with watchOS 5 or later.
  • Both users need FaceTime Audio enabled on their iPhone (Settings > FaceTime > FaceTime Calls).
  • Both users need to be signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID used for FaceTime.

Once those are in place:

  1. Open the Walkie-Talkie app on your Apple Watch (the yellow icon with a lightning bolt).
  2. Tap the plus sign (+) to add a friend.
  3. Choose a contact from your list. They must have an Apple Watch with Walkie-Talkie available.
  4. Wait for them to accept your invitation. They’ll get a notification and must tap Accept.
  5. Once accepted, you’ll see their name in your Walkie-Talkie list. Tap their name to start a conversation.

If you don’t see the Walkie-Talkie app, it might be hidden. You can add it from the App Library on your watch by pressing the Digital Crown and searching for “Walkie Talkie.”

How to Use Walkie-Talkie

Using Walkie-Talkie is straightforward:

  • Open the Walkie-Talkie app and tap a friend’s name.
  • Press and hold the green button to talk. Release it when you’re done.
  • The other person will hear your voice and can respond by pressing and holding their own button.

You can also use the Walkie-Talkie complication on your watch face for one-tap access. When you’re in the app, the other person’s status appears: green means they’re available, orange means they’re busy, and gray means they’re unavailable (e.g., their watch is on Do Not Disturb).

Note: Walkie-Talkie requires both users to be online. If the other person’s watch is off or in airplane mode, they won’t receive your message until they’re back online.

Common Problems and Fixes

Walkie-Talkie can sometimes fail to connect or send messages. Here are the most common issues and how to fix them:

  • Can’t add a friend: Make sure both of you have FaceTime Audio enabled and are using the same Apple ID for iCloud and FaceTime. Also, both watches must be on watchOS 5 or later.
  • Message won’t send: Check your internet connection. Walkie-Talkie needs Wi-Fi or cellular. If you’re on Wi-Fi, try switching to cellular or vice versa.
  • Friend shows as unavailable: They might have Do Not Disturb, Theater Mode, or Workout mode enabled. Ask them to check their Control Center.
  • App is missing: Go to the App Library on your watch, search for “Walkie Talkie,” and reinstall it if necessary.
  • Voice sounds robotic or delayed: This is usually due to a poor network connection. Move closer to your router or try a different network.

If nothing works, restart both watches by pressing and holding the side button and the Digital Crown until the Apple logo appears.

Walkie-Talkie vs. FaceTime Audio vs. Phone Call

Walkie-Talkie is often compared to FaceTime Audio and regular phone calls. Here’s how they differ:

  • Walkie-Talkie: Push-to-talk, one-way at a time, quick messages, uses FaceTime Audio infrastructure.
  • FaceTime Audio: Two-way, full-duplex, like a phone call but over the internet. You can use it on Apple Watch, but you need to be on Wi-Fi or cellular.
  • Phone Call: Uses your carrier’s network, requires a cellular plan on your watch (or iPhone nearby). Full-duplex, two-way.

Walkie-Talkie is best for short, spontaneous messages where you don’t want to have a full conversation. It’s also more private than a text message because it’s voice.

Privacy and Safety

Walkie-Talkie is a two-way communication tool. Anyone you add can talk to you at any time, unless you turn it off. To avoid unwanted interruptions:

  • Turn off Walkie-Talkie by opening the app and toggling the switch at the top to off.
  • Use Do Not Disturb or Theater Mode to silence notifications.
  • Only add people you trust. You can remove a friend by swiping left on their name and tapping Remove.

Apple does not monitor your conversations, but they are transmitted over the internet. While they are encrypted in transit, it’s still a good idea to avoid sharing sensitive personal information over Walkie-Talkie.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Walkie-Talkie without an iPhone?

No, you need an iPhone to set up the Apple Watch and enable FaceTime Audio. However, once set up, you can use Walkie-Talkie over Wi-Fi or cellular without your iPhone being nearby, as long as your watch has a connection.

Does Walkie-Talkie work on Apple Watch SE?

Yes, Walkie-Talkie works on Apple Watch SE (1st and 2nd generation) and all Apple Watch Series 2 and later, except the first-generation Apple Watch (Series 0). The original Apple Watch doesn’t support FaceTime Audio, so it can’t use Walkie-Talkie.

Why is Walkie-Talkie not working in my country?

Walkie-Talkie uses FaceTime Audio, which is not available in all countries or regions. Apple lists supported countries on its website. If FaceTime Audio isn’t available in your region, Walkie-Talkie won’t work.

Can I use Walkie-Talkie with Android users?

No, Walkie-Talkie is exclusive to Apple Watch and requires both users to have an Apple Watch with FaceTime Audio. There is no Android version.

How do I know if someone is available on Walkie-Talkie?

When you add a friend, their status appears next to their name: green means available, orange means busy, and gray means unavailable. You can also see their status in the Walkie-Talkie app on your watch.
