This page explains what the strongest armor in Monster Hunter World is, how to evaluate it, and how to get it. You enter your current Hunter Rank and the armor set you’re considering, and the calculator below shows you the total defense and the effective defense after elemental resistances, so you can compare sets at a glance.

Formula

The calculator uses two simple formulas:

Total Defense = Base Defense (from the armor set, after upgrades)

Effective Defense (vs. elemental) = Base Defense + (Total Elemental Resist × 0.5)

Where:

  • Base Defense – the defense number shown on your armor after upgrading. It’s the sum of all five pieces.
  • Total Elemental Resist – the sum of all five elemental resistances (fire, water, thunder, ice, dragon) shown on the armor. This is a rough average; the game applies each element separately.
  • 0.5 – a rough multiplier for how much elemental resist contributes to effective defense against elemental attacks. It’s not an official formula, but it gives a quick comparison.

Worked Example

Using the default values: Hunter Rank 50, Base Defense 450, Total Elemental Resist 10.

Step 1: Total Defense = 450 (just the base).

Step 2: Effective Defense = 450 + (10 × 0.5) = 450 + 5 = 455.

The calculator shows Total Defense 450 and Effective Defense 455. This means that against an elemental attack, the set effectively has 455 defense, slightly better than its raw number.

What Does “Strongest Actually Mean?

In Monster Hunter World, “strongest isn’t a single number. It depends on what you’re fighting and your playstyle. There are two main interpretations:

  • Highest raw defense – the armor with the most defense points after fully upgrading. This is usually the best for surviving big physical hits.
  • Best all-around set – a set that offers good defense, useful skills, and decent elemental resistances. This is what most players mean by “strongestâ€ in practice.

For the base game (before Iceborne), the Drachen armor from Behemoth is widely considered the best for melee builds because of its high defense and excellent skills (Critical Eye, Attack Boost, and Master’s Touch). For ranged, the Xeno’jiiva or Kulve Taroth sets are often preferred.

In Iceborne, the Fatalis armor is the strongest in terms of raw defense and skills. It has the highest defense cap and offers powerful set bonuses. However, it requires beating Fatalis, the final boss, which is extremely difficult.

How to Get the Best Armor

To get the strongest armor, you need to defeat specific monsters. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Drachen Armor – from the Behemoth event quest (base game). Requires HR 16+, but it’s a tough fight. You need Behemoth materials like Behemoth Claws and Bones.
  • Fatalis Armor – from the Fatalis event quest in Iceborne. Requires MR 24+, but the fight is brutal. You need Fatalis materials like Fatalis Evil Eye and Fatalis Cortex.
  • Other high-defense sets – like the Raging Brachydios or Alatreon armor, are also strong but slightly below Fatalis.

Remember that armor defense can be increased by upgrading with Armor Spheres. The max upgrade level depends on the armor’s rarity and whether you have Iceborne.

How to Choose the Right Armor

Choosing the “strongest armor for your situation involves more than just defense. Consider these factors:

  • Skills – Look for skills that complement your weapon. For example, the Drachen set gives Master’s Touch, which prevents sharpness loss on critical hits – great for melee.
  • Elemental Resistances – If you’re fighting a fire-breathing monster, you want high fire resistance. Check the resistances on the armor pieces.
  • Set Bonuses – Some sets have bonuses when you wear 2, 3, or 4 pieces. Fatalis’s set bonus gives True Razor Sharp and Transcendence, which are extremely powerful.
  • Slots – Decoration slots allow you to add more skills. More slots = more flexibility.

Use the calculator above to compare the effective defense of different sets. But remember, a set with 50 less defense but better skills might be stronger in practice.

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

A common mistake is thinking that the highest defense number is always the best. In reality, skills and resistances often matter more. For example, the Drachen set has lower defense than some Iceborne sets, but its skills make it better for many builds.

Another mistake is ignoring elemental resistances. A monster’s elemental attack can deal significant damage, and having high resistance can save you. However, the game’s defense formula isn’t linear – the effective defense from resistances is complex. The calculator’s 0.5 multiplier is a rough approximation, not the game’s actual formula.

Also, don’t forget to upgrade your armor with Armor Spheres. A fully upgraded lower-tier set can have higher defense than an unupgraded higher-tier set.

Limitations of the Calculator

This calculator gives a quick comparison, but it doesn’t account for:

  • The actual damage formula, which involves monster attack power, defense, and resistances in a non-linear way.
  • Skills that reduce damage (like Divine Blessing) or increase defense (like Defense Boost).
  • Elemental resistances apply separately for each element, not as a sum.

For precise planning, use the in-game armor builder or a community tool. But for a rough “which set is tankier? question, this calculator works fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Fatalis armor the strongest in Monster Hunter World?

Yes, in Iceborne, Fatalis armor has the highest raw defense and some of the best skills. It’s the final endgame armor. However, it requires beating Fatalis, which is extremely hard. Many players consider it the strongest because of its defense and set bonuses.

What is the best armor for a beginner?

For beginners, the High Metal or Bone armor sets are good early choices. They offer decent defense and easy-to-get materials. As you progress, you can upgrade to Odogaron or Rathalos armor for better skills.

Does armor defense matter more than skills?

It depends on your skill level. If you rarely get hit, skills matter more. If you get hit often, defense is more important. In general, a mix is best. Most endgame builds prioritize skills, but having at least 400+ defense is recommended.

How do I upgrade armor defense?

You upgrade armor at the smithy using Armor Spheres. You get Armor Spheres from quests, bounties, and mining. Each upgrade increases defense by a small amount. The maximum upgrade level depends on the armor’s rarity and whether you have Iceborne.

Can you mix armor sets for better defense?

Yes, mixing sets is common. You can take the best pieces from different sets to get the skills you want. For example, you might use three pieces of Fatalis and two pieces of Raging Brachydios for the Agitator skill. The calculator above helps you compare the total defense of mixed sets.

Is elemental resistance important?

It can be, especially against monsters that use strong elemental attacks. For example, fighting a Kirin with low thunder resistance can be painful. However, many players ignore elemental resistances and rely on skills like Health Boost and Divine Blessing instead. It’s a trade-off.
