Where Winds Meet Wrestling Minigame Locations & How They Work

Card No. 06·54096 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

In Where Winds Meet, the wrestling minigame is a recurring side activity where you challenge NPCs to a one-on-one grapple contest. You can find wrestlers marked with a special icon in most major towns and villages, and the minigame itself is a timed button-mashing and timing-based duel. This article explains exactly where to find every wrestling location and how the minigame works, including controls, rewards, and tips.

Where to Find Wrestling Minigame Locations

Wrestling challenges appear in most major settlements across the map, including Bianjing, Kaifeng, and smaller villages. Look for a small icon of two crossed arms or a fist on your world map. Each location has one wrestler, usually standing near a training yard or a clear open space. Some are only available after you reach a certain character level or complete a main story chapter.

Known spots include:

  • Bianjing – near the northern market square
  • Kaifeng – by the east gate training grounds
  • Xiangyang – outside the military camp
  • Smaller villages – often near the inn or blacksmith

If you cannot see the icon, fast-travel to the nearest waypoint and walk around. The wrestler will have a green exclamation mark above their head if you have not beaten them yet.

How the Wrestling Minigame Works

The minigame is a three-round contest. Each round starts with a brief countdown, then you must rapidly press the displayed button (on PC: F, on console: X or Square) to build up your grapple meter. When the meter is full, you press the opposite button to throw your opponent. If you time the throw at the exact moment the opponent’s meter is also full, you perform a counter-throw and earn extra points.

There are three difficulty levels: Novice, Skilled, and Master. Novice wrestlers have slower meter fills, while Masters fill their meter almost as fast as you. You win the match by winning two out of three rounds. Losing a round happens when your opponent throws you first.

How to Choose the Right Wrestler

Before starting, you can inspect each wrestler’s level and difficulty. Your character’s strength and vitality stats affect how fast your meter fills. If you are underleveled, the meter fills noticeably slower. Choose a wrestler whose level is at or below your character level for a fair fight. Higher-level wrestlers give better rewards but are harder to beat.

There is no penalty for losing, so you can retry as many times as you want. The wrestler resets to full health (or in this case, full meter) after each attempt.

Common Problems and Mistakes

Players often fail because they mash the button too fast, which causes the game to register only every other press. Press at a steady rhythm of about 5-6 presses per second. Another common mistake is pressing the throw button too early – wait until the meter is completely full, otherwise the throw is weak and the opponent recovers instantly.

If you keep losing, check your character’s stamina. Wrestling consumes stamina, and if your stamina bar is empty, your meter fill speed drops by half. Eat a stamina-restoring meal before the match.

Rewards and Why Bother

Winning a wrestling match rewards you with:

  • Copper coins (amount varies by difficulty)
  • Skill points that can be spent in the martial arts skill tree
  • A chance to learn a unique wrestling move that can be used in regular combat

Beating all wrestlers in a region also grants a title that gives a small permanent stat boost to strength. The moves you learn are mostly for show, but they count toward the “Master of Martial Arts” achievement.

Comparison to Other Minigames

Wrestling is similar to the game’s archery and fishing minigames in that it uses a timing-based mechanic. However, wrestling is the only one that directly uses your character’s strength stat. If you have invested in strength, you will find wrestling easier than archery, which relies on dexterity. Unlike fishing, wrestling has no random element – it is purely about button timing and speed.

Tips for Winning Every Match

  1. Use a controller if you are on PC – the vibration feedback helps you feel the meter fill.
  2. Watch the opponent’s meter, not just yours. When theirs is about to fill, prepare to counter.
  3. Do not spam the throw button. One clean throw is better than three mistimed ones.
  4. If you are struggling, level up your strength and vitality stats first, then come back.
