Formula
This calculator is for runners, walkers, and cyclists who want to convert a total workout time and distance into an average pace and speed. The two formulas are:
- Pace (min/km) = total time (minutes) ÷ distance (km)
- Speed (km/h) = distance (km) ÷ (total time (minutes) ÷ 60)
Where:
- t = total time in minutes (e.g., 50 minutes)
- d = distance in kilometers (e.g., 10 km)
- Pace is expressed as minutes per kilometer, and speed as kilometers per hour.
If you prefer miles, convert distance to kilometers first (1 mile = 1.60934 km) or use the pace in min/mile by dividing time by miles directly.
Worked Example
Using the default values from the calculator: you run 10 km in 50 minutes.
- Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
- Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h
The calculator shows 5.00 min/km and 12.00 km/h as the headline answers.
When to Use This Calculator
Use it any time you have a total time and distance and want a consistent pace figure. Common uses:
- Checking your average pace for a training run or race.
- Converting a treadmill readout (which often shows speed) to a pace you can compare with outdoor runs.
- Planning a route: if you know your target pace, you can estimate finish time (time = pace × distance).
- Comparing performance across different distances (e.g., 5K vs. 10K).
The result is an average, not a split. It does not tell you how fast you ran each kilometer, only the overall mean.
How to Read the Result
A lower pace (e.g., 4:30 min/km) means faster running; a higher pace (e.g., 6:15 min/km) means slower. Speed works in the opposite direction: higher km/h is faster. For most runners, pace is the more intuitive metric because it scales linearly with effort over distance. Speed is useful for cyclists and treadmill users.
Note that the calculator gives pace in decimal minutes (5.00 = 5:00). If you see 5.50, that means 5 minutes and 30 seconds (0.50 × 60).
Common Mistakes and Unit Mix-Ups
- Mixing minutes and hours: Enter total time in minutes only. If you ran 1 hour 10 minutes, enter 70, not 1.10.
- Mixing miles and kilometers: The formula assumes km. If you ran 6.2 miles, convert to km (6.2 × 1.609 = 9.98 km) or use miles directly in the pace formula (time ÷ miles = min/mile).
- Rounding too early: Keep at least two decimals during intermediate steps; rounding the time to whole minutes can shift pace by several seconds.
- Using elapsed time instead of moving time: If you stopped for traffic lights or water, elapsed time includes pauses, making your pace look slower than your actual running pace.
Limitations of the Formula
The formula assumes constant speed. Real runs have hills, wind, and fatigue, so your instantaneous pace varies. The average pace is still a useful training metric, but it does not reflect effort (heart rate) or terrain. For race prediction, more advanced models (like Riegel’s formula) use a fatigue factor, but for a simple average, this calculation is exact.
Also, the calculator only accepts non-negative time and distance. You cannot enter a distance of zero, because division by zero is undefined.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert min/km to min/mile?
Multiply the pace in min/km by 1.60934. For example, 5:00 min/km × 1.609 = 8:03 min/mile. Conversely, divide min/mile by 1.609 to get min/km.
What is a good running pace for a beginner?
It varies widely by age, fitness, and gender. A common conversational pace for a new runner is around 6:30–8:00 min/km (10:30–12:50 min/mile). Focus on effort rather than a specific number; you should be able to speak in short sentences.
Why does my treadmill show speed instead of pace?
Treadmills typically display km/h or mph. To get pace, divide 60 by the speed. For example, 10 km/h = 60 ÷ 10 = 6:00 min/km. This calculator does that conversion for you.
Can I use this for walking?
Yes. Walking pace is usually 10–15 min/km (about 4–6 km/h). The formula works for any distance and time combination.
How accurate is the average pace for a race?
It is exact for the total time and distance, but races rarely run at perfectly even splits. Use it as a baseline; your actual splits will vary due to course profile and pacing strategy.
What if I run in miles but want min/km?
Convert your distance to kilometers first (miles × 1.60934), then enter that number. The calculator will give min/km. Alternatively, enter miles and time, and you get min/mile, which you can then convert.
