Pokémon from the Game Boy Advance games can be moved into Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, plus HeartGold and SoulSilver, using a Nintendo DS with a Game Boy Advance cartridge slot. From those DS games, Pokémon can continue through later generations, but each transfer method has its own hardware, direction, and one-way restrictions.
Which games accept Pokémon from GBA?
The five main-series Nintendo DS games that can directly import Pokémon from compatible Game Boy Advance cartridges are:
- Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl
- Pokémon Platinum
- Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver
The GBA games involved are Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, and LeafGreen. These are not wireless trades: the GBA game is inserted into the second cartridge slot of a compatible original or “DS Lite” Nintendo DS while the DS game is played. The feature is commonly called the Pal Park transfer or migration system.
Pokémon Black, White, Black 2, and White 2 do not read GBA cartridges directly. They can receive Pokémon from the five DS games above through a separate transfer process. Later games, including Pokémon Bank-compatible titles and Pokémon HOME, add further steps, but they do not change which DS games perform the direct GBA import.
How Pal Park migration works
In Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, or SoulSilver, the player uses the Pal Park facility after meeting the game’s requirements. The DS game reads eligible Pokémon saved in the GBA cartridge and offers a migration of six at a time. Those Pokémon are then caught in a special catching activity inside Pal Park.
- Put the GBA Pokémon game in the GBA slot of a Nintendo DS or DS Lite.
- Put the chosen DS Pokémon game in the DS card slot and start it.
- Reach the required point in the DS game and access Pal Park.
- Choose six eligible Pokémon from the GBA save for migration.
- Catch the six transferred Pokémon in Pal Park to add them to the DS save.
Migration is one-way. A Pokémon moved to the DS game cannot be sent back to the GBA cartridge. The six-Pokémon limit applies to each migration session; it does not mean the entire GBA collection is limited to six, since the process can be repeated.
Hardware and game requirements
A Nintendo DS or DS Lite has the slot needed for GBA cartridges. The Nintendo DSi, DSi XL, Nintendo 3DS family, and Nintendo 2DS family do not have a GBA cartridge slot, so they cannot perform Pal Park migration directly. A 3DS can play some DS games, but that does not give it the missing GBA hardware.
The GBA game must have a readable save with Pokémon available to migrate. The GBA cartridge must be inserted while the DS game is running, and the two games must be compatible regions for the feature to work as intended. If you have a DS Lite and a GBA game but no DS Pokémon game from the compatible list, there is no direct Pal Park destination.
Some Pokémon cannot be selected for migration under the game’s restrictions, including certain Pokémon holding mail or items and Pokémon with moves or conditions that the DS game cannot accept through this feature. If a Pokémon is unavailable, check its status in the GBA game and remove held items or mail where possible before trying again.
Moving Pokémon beyond the DS games
For players continuing toward the later generations, the usual route is a chain rather than a direct GBA-to-newer-game transfer:
- GBA to DS: Use Pal Park to move Pokémon into Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, or SoulSilver.
- Generation IV to Generation V: Use the Poké Transfer facility to transfer Pokémon from a compatible Generation IV DS game to Black, White, Black 2, or White 2. This transfer is also one-way and requires two DS-family systems for the transfer activity.
- Generation V onward: Pokémon Bank was used to move supported Pokémon from Generation V games into Bank, and from compatible 3DS games onward. Pokémon HOME supports transfers from supported games and services, subject to its compatibility rules.
Availability of online services can change, and not every Pokémon or game is compatible with every later destination. Check the current compatibility information for Bank and HOME before planning a long transfer chain, especially if the Pokémon’s final destination matters. Once a Pokémon leaves a GBA game, the journey back to that cartridge is not possible.
Choosing a transfer route and avoiding problems
If the goal is simply to play with GBA Pokémon on a DS, any of the five Pal Park games will work, provided you have the right hardware and meet the in-game requirement. If you want to continue into later games, choose a route based on the generations and services you can access, rather than assuming a newer console will read an older cartridge.
- Check the console first: Use an original DS or DS Lite for the GBA slot. DSi and later systems cannot substitute for it.
- Check the game list: The DS destination must be Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, or SoulSilver for the direct GBA step.
- Protect the source save: Keep the GBA cartridge and its save intact until you have confirmed the Pokémon arrived in the DS save.
- Do not expect a return transfer: Migration and subsequent generation transfers are generally one-way.
- Try basic checks if it fails: Confirm the GBA cartridge is seated, that its save loads normally, and that the DS game has reached Pal Park. A dirty or damaged cartridge or slot can also prevent detection.
A frequent misconception is that any DS Pokémon game can import directly from GBA. The feature is limited to the five named games, and Black and White-era titles use a later-generation transfer facility instead. Another common mix-up is confusing the ability to play a DS game on a 3DS with the ability to use the GBA slot: the 3DS has no such slot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Pokémon Ruby or Emerald transfer directly to Pokémon Black?
No. First migrate the Pokémon into Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, or SoulSilver with Pal Park. Then use the appropriate Generation IV-to-V transfer process.
Can I transfer Pokémon from GBA games using a Nintendo 3DS?
Not directly. The 3DS has no GBA cartridge slot. Pal Park requires a Nintendo DS or DS Lite with the GBA game inserted.
Can Pokémon be moved back to a GBA game?
No. Pal Park migration is one-way, and later generation transfers do not return Pokémon to the GBA games.
Do I have to transfer all my Pokémon at once?
No. Pal Park moves six Pokémon per session, and you can repeat the process for additional eligible Pokémon.
Can a GBA Pokémon game trade wirelessly with a DS game?
No. The direct GBA-to-DS method is cartridge migration through Pal Park, not a wireless trade between the two games.
