If your DOCX files are missing the Word icon and instead show a blank page or a generic icon, the file association is broken or the icon cache is corrupted. You can fix this in a few minutes by rebuilding the icon cache, resetting file associations, or repairing Microsoft Office.
Why the Word Icon Disappears
Windows uses a hidden database called the icon cache to display file icons quickly. When this cache gets corrupted—often after an Office update, a crash, or a system restore—icons for DOCX and other file types can vanish. Another common cause is a change in the default app for opening DOCX files. If another program (like Notepad or a third-party editor) takes over the association, Windows shows that program’s icon instead of Word’s. Less often, the Office installation itself is damaged, so the icon resource that Word provides to Windows is missing.
Quick Fix: Rebuild the Icon Cache
This solves the majority of cases where icons are blank or generic.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find Windows Explorer in the list, right-click it, and choose Restart. The taskbar and desktop will flicker—that’s normal.
- Open File Explorer and go to C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Local.
- Look for a file named IconCache.db (you may need to enable “Hidden items in the View tab).
- Delete it. Windows will recreate it automatically.
- Restart your PC (or restart Explorer again). The icons should reappear.
If that doesn’t work, use the built-in Disk Cleanup tool: search for “Disk Cleanup,â€ select your drive, and check Thumbnails before running it.
Reset File Associations for DOCX
If the icon is wrong (e.g., a Notepad icon), the file association is pointing to the wrong app.
- Right-click any DOCX file and select Open with → Choose another app.
- Select Word from the list. If it’s not there, scroll down and click More apps.
- Check the box that says Always use this app to open .docx files.
- Click OK.
To reset all Office file associations at once, open the Settings app → Apps → Default apps. Scroll down and click Microsoft Word (or “Choose defaults by file type), then set .docx to Word. If Word is not listed, you may need to repair the Office installation.
Repair Microsoft Office
When the icon resource itself is damaged, a repair is the most reliable fix.
- Open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office in the list.
- Right-click it and select Change.
- Choose Quick Repair first. If that doesn’t help, run Online Repair (this requires an internet connection and may take a while).
Quick Repair takes a few minutes and doesn’t affect your files. Online Repair is more thorough but will reinstall Office components.
When the Icon Is Blank but Word Opens Fine
If double-clicking the file still opens Word correctly, the problem is purely cosmetic—the icon cache or thumbnail preview is stale. In that case, rebuilding the cache (as above) is enough. If the file opens in the wrong program, that’s a separate association issue, covered in the previous section. If the file doesn’t open at all, the file itself may be corrupted or the Word installation is broken—try opening Word first and then use File → Open to see if the file loads.
Preventing the Problem from Returning
- Keep Windows and Office updated—updates often fix icon cache bugs.
- Don’t use third-party “icon packâ€ or “themeâ€ tools that modify system icons; they can corrupt the cache.
- If you use a cloud sync service (OneDrive, Dropbox), make sure it’s not marking files as “online-onlyâ€ in a way that confuses Explorer. Right-click the file and choose Always keep on this device to test.
- Run a disk check if you notice other system glitches—a failing drive can cause cache corruption.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my DOCX icon a blank white page?
A blank white page usually means the icon cache has lost the Word icon data. Rebuilding the cache (see above) is the standard fix. If that fails, repair Office.
Why does my DOCX file show a Word icon but open in Notepad?
That’s a file association issue. The icon may be cached from an old association. Reset the default app for .docx to Word in Settings → Default apps. If Notepad keeps taking over, check if a third-party program (like a text editor) is forcing itself as default.
Will rebuilding the icon cache delete my files?
No. The icon cache is only a database of icon images. Deleting it does not affect any of your documents. Windows will rebuild it automatically.
I don’t have Microsoft Office installed—can I still see DOCX icons?
No. The DOCX format is owned by Microsoft. Without Word (or a compatible program like LibreOffice), Windows has no built-in icon for it. You’ll see a generic icon. Installing a free alternative like LibreOffice will give you a different icon, but it won’t be the Word logo.
Why does the icon show correctly in File Explorer but not on the desktop?
Desktop icons are cached separately. Restart Explorer or reboot. If it persists, right-click the desktop, choose Refresh, or rebuild the cache as described.
Does this happen on macOS?
No. This is a Windows-specific issue. On macOS, DOCX icons are managed by the system and rarely disappear. If they do, restarting Finder (hold Option and right-click the Finder icon → Relaunch) usually fixes it.
