Wayward Weapons Quest Guide: WoW Steps & Tips

Card No. 06·4093 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

This guide explains how to complete the Wayward Weapons quest in World of Warcraft, including where to get it, what you need to do, and how to finish it efficiently. You will learn the exact item locations, the recommended level range, and the rewards you can expect.

Quest Overview and Starting Point

Wayward Weapons is a side quest in the Borean Tundra zone of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. It is offered by Grumbol Stoutpick, a tauren NPC located at the Valiance Keep (for the Alliance) or Warsong Hold (for the Horde) – actually, the quest giver is at the Riplash Ruins, a small camp to the west of the main hubs. The quest is available to players around level 71–72, and it asks you to collect lost weapons from the Riplash Myrmidons and Riplash Oracles – naga enemies that patrol the nearby coast and underwater areas.

The quest is part of a chain that introduces you to the region’s conflict with the naga. You need to gather 6 Wayward Weapons from the naga, which drop randomly from the Riplash mobs. The drop rate is fairly high, so you can expect to finish within 10–15 minutes of killing the naga in the area.

How to Get the Quest

To pick up Wayward Weapons, you must first complete the preceding quest in the chain, “The Riplash, which is given by the same NPC. If you haven’t done it yet, head to the coordinates (58, 58) in Borean Tundra, where you’ll find Grumbol Stoutpick at a small camp. He will offer you the quest after you finish the previous one. If you’re Horde, the quest is also available from the same NPC, as the camp is neutral territory. The quest is not faction-specific, so both factions can take it.

Quest Objectives and Item Locations

The objective is straightforward: collect 6 Wayward Weapons from the Riplash naga. These enemies are found in the water and along the shore west of the camp. The naga come in two types:

  • Riplash Myrmidons – melee fighters that patrol the shoreline and shallow water.
  • Riplash Oracles – casters that stay in deeper water, often in groups.

Both drop the Wayward Weapons, but the drop rate is not 100%. You may need to kill 10–15 naga to get all six. The weapons appear as a small, glowing item on the ground, so be sure to loot every corpse. If you’re a skinner, you can also skin the naga for extra leather, but that’s not required.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

  1. Accept the quest from Grumbol Stoutpick at the Riplash Ruins camp.
  2. Head west toward the coastline, where the Riplash naga spawn.
  3. Kill Riplash Myrmidons and Oracles until you have collected 6 Wayward Weapons.
  4. Return to Grumbol Stoutpick to turn in the quest.

That’s it. The whole process takes about 10 minutes if you’re at the right level. The naga are level 71–72, so if you’re lower than that, you might struggle with the casters. Bring some water or health potions if you’re a melee class.

Rewards and Quest Chain

Upon completion, you receive experience points (around 22,000 XP at level 71) and a choice of one of three gear rewards: a cloth helm, a leather helm, or a mail helm. The exact items are:

  • Wayward Helm – cloth, with intellect and spirit.
  • Wayward Coif – leather, with agility and stamina.
  • Wayward Headpiece – mail, with strength and stamina.

The quest also advances the story chain, leading to the next quest, “The Naga Horde, which sends you to kill a named naga boss. If you’re a completionist, you can follow the chain to the end, which rewards a better trinket later.

Common Problems and Tips

One common issue is that the naga can be spread out, and the Oracles tend to stay in deeper water, making it hard to pull them without swimming. If you’re a melee class, you might need to swim out to them, which can be annoying. Here are some tips:

  • Use a ranged ability or a pet to pull Oracles to the shore.
  • If you’re a druid, use aquatic form to move faster in the water.
  • Kill the Myrmidons first, as they are easier and also drop the weapons.
  • If the drop rate feels low, try killing the Oracles, as they seem to have a slightly higher drop rate.

Another issue is that the quest is part of a chain, so if you skipped the previous quest, you won’t see the NPC’s quest marker. Make sure you complete “The Riplash first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do this quest at level 70?

Technically yes, but the naga are level 71–72, so you’ll have a hard time hitting them and may take more damage. It’s recommended to be at least level 71, but with a group or good gear, level 70 is doable.

Is the quest available to both factions?

Yes, the quest is neutral. Both Alliance and Horde players can pick it up from Grumbol Stoutpick at the same camp.

How long does it take to complete?

If you focus on killing the naga, it takes about 10–15 minutes. The drop rate is around 60–70%, so you’ll need to kill roughly 10 naga to get six weapons.

What if I lose the quest item?

The Wayward Weapons are not unique, and they are automatically added to your quest tracker. You can’t lose them. If you abandon the quest, you can re-accept it from the NPC.

Is this quest worth doing?

Yes, it gives good XP and a gear upgrade for level 71. It also continues the storyline, which leads to more quests and rewards in Borean Tundra.

Can I solo this quest?

Absolutely, it’s designed for solo players. Just be careful with the Oracles if you’re a cloth wearer, as they can hit hard.

Alternatives and Similar Quests

If you’re looking for other quests in Borean Tundra that give similar rewards, consider:

  • “The Naga Hordeâ€ – the next quest in the chain, which involves killing a named naga.
  • “Killing the Scourgeâ€ – a quest at Valiance Keep that involves killing undead.
  • “The Borean Inquisitionâ€ – a quest that starts in the same area and involves collecting items from mobs.

These quests are all in the same level range and offer comparable XP and gear.
