This calculator finds the year-over-year (YoY) growth of sales: enter last year’s figure and this year’s figure for the same period. You get the growth rate in percent, the change and the ratio between the two years.
Formula
YoY growth = (this year − last year) ÷ last year × 100. A negative result is a decline.
- a: sales in the earlier period (must not be 0)
- b: sales in the same period one year later
Worked Example
Last year 120,000, this year 138,000.
- Change = 138,000 − 120,000 = 18,000.00
- 18,000 ÷ 120,000 = 0.15, × 100 = 15.00%
- Ratio = 138,000 ÷ 120,000 = 1.1500
Limits and common mistakes
- Compare like with like: the same months or quarters, so seasons do not distort the figure.
- Growth of 15% then a fall of 15% does not return to the start (1.15 × 0.85 = 0.9775).
- Over several years use the average yearly rate (ratio^(1/years) − 1), not the total divided by years.
