This calculator converts a length in millimeters (mm) into centimeters (cm) and feet (ft). Enter a nonnegative millimeter value to see both metric and customary results, with centimeters shown to two decimal places and feet to four.

Formula

To convert millimeters to centimeters, divide the millimeter value by 10. To convert millimeters to feet, divide it by 304.8, because one foot equals exactly 304.8 millimeters.

  • Centimeters: cm = mm ÷ 10
  • Feet: ft = mm ÷ 304.8

Here, mm is the input length in millimeters, cm is the same length in centimeters, and ft is that length in feet. These are unit conversions: the physical length stays the same; only its numerical value and unit change.

Worked Example

The calculator’s default input is 1,000 mm.

  1. Centimeters: 1,000 ÷ 10 = 100.00 cm.
  2. Feet: 1,000 ÷ 304.8 = 3.280839… ft, which rounds to 3.2808 ft.

Thus, 1,000 mm is 100 cm, or about 3.2808 ft. The two displayed answers represent the same length.

How the Conversion Works

The metric system uses decimal relationships between millimeters and centimeters. A centimeter contains 10 millimeters, so dividing by 10 converts a measurement from the smaller unit to the larger one. For example, 75 mm is 7.5 cm, and 250 mm is 25 cm.

A foot is a customary unit rather than a decimal step in the metric system. The international foot is defined as exactly 0.3048 meters. Since one meter is 1,000 mm, one foot is 304.8 mm. Dividing by 304.8 therefore converts any millimeter measurement to feet. For instance, 500 mm ÷ 304.8 is about 1.6404 ft.

For a reverse conversion, multiply instead: centimeters to millimeters means multiplying by 10, while feet to millimeters means multiplying by 304.8. Keeping track of the direction matters. Dividing by a larger number when converting feet to millimeters, for example, would make the result smaller when it should become larger.

When to Use a Millimeter-to-Feet Calculator

This conversion is useful when a measurement is recorded in millimeters but needs to be compared with a specification, drawing, or object measured in feet. Millimeters are common for small dimensions and technical measurements; feet are often used for room dimensions, height, and larger objects in customary-unit contexts.

  • Convert a dimension from a metric drawing for a rough comparison with a feet-based measurement.
  • Express a measured length in both metric and customary units for a report or product description.
  • Check whether a value entered in millimeters is on the same scale as a value stated in feet.

The calculator accepts any nonnegative length, including zero. Its math does not determine whether a converted dimension is suitable for a particular project or meets a specification; consult the relevant drawing or requirements for that judgment.

Reading Precision and Rounding

The calculator displays centimeters to two decimal places and feet to four. These are presentation choices, not claims that the original measurement was made with that precision. A result of 3.2808 ft may look more exact than an input measured approximately, but conversion cannot improve the source measurement’s accuracy.

For example, 100 mm converts exactly to 10 cm. In feet, it is approximately 0.32808399 ft, displayed here as 0.3281 ft. If a task needs a different number of decimal places, keep the unrounded value during intermediate calculations and round only the final result. Repeatedly rounding intermediate values can create small discrepancies.

Fractions of a foot are sometimes more convenient than decimal feet. Since one foot contains 12 inches, a decimal remainder can be multiplied by 12 to express it in inches. For example, 1.5 ft is 1 ft plus 0.5 × 12 = 6 inches, so it is 1 ft 6 in. Do not mistake a decimal such as 1.5 ft for 1 ft 5 in.

Common Conversion Mistakes

  • Confusing centimeters and millimeters: there are 10 mm in 1 cm, not 100. A 300 mm measurement is 30 cm.
  • Using the wrong feet factor: divide millimeters by 304.8 to get feet; multiply feet by 304.8 to get millimeters.
  • Mixing feet and inches: feet are divided into 12 inches, not 10. A decimal-foot result is not automatically feet-and-inches notation.
  • Rounding too early: preserve extra digits until the final answer if the converted value will be used in another calculation.
  • Assuming a conversion changes the measurement: it changes the unit and number, not the actual length.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many centimeters are in a millimeter?
One millimeter is 0.1 centimeter. To convert millimeters to centimeters, divide by 10.

How many millimeters are in a foot?
One international foot is exactly 304.8 mm. To convert a foot measurement to millimeters, multiply the number of feet by 304.8.

How do I convert mm to feet and inches?
First divide millimeters by 304.8 to get decimal feet. Keep the whole feet, then multiply the decimal remainder by 12 to get inches. Round inches to the precision you need.

Is 1,000 mm exactly 3.28 feet?
It is approximately 3.28084 ft, so 3.28 ft is a rounded value. The exact conversion is 1,000 ÷ 304.8 feet.

Why is my answer different from another calculator?
Calculators may display different numbers of decimal places or round differently. Check that both use the same input and the conversion factor 304.8 mm per foot, then compare unrounded results if available.
