This calculator turns a length written in feet and inches, such as 5 ft 7 in, into metres and centimetres. Enter the feet and the inches separately; you get metres, centimetres and the total in inches.
Formula
First put everything in inches: total inches = feet × 12 + inches. One inch is exactly 2.54 cm (0.0254 m), so metres = total inches × 0.0254 and centimetres = total inches × 2.54.
- ft: whole feet
- inch: the extra inches (may have decimals, e.g. 7.5)
Worked Example
5 ft 7 in.
- Total inches = 5 × 12 + 7 = 67.00 in
- Metres = 67 × 0.0254 = 1.7018 m
- Centimetres = 67 × 2.54 = 170.18 cm
Limits and common mistakes
- Do not type 5.7 for 5 ft 7 in: 5.7 ft is 5 ft 8.4 in. Use the two boxes.
- Fractions on a tape: 7 1/4 in is 7.25 in, 7 3/8 in is 7.375 in.
- One foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so feet alone convert with × 0.3048.
