Larval Tear locations in Elden Ring are scattered across the Lands Between, and you need them to respec your character at Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon. This guide lists every known Larval Tear location, explains how to use them, and answers common questions about farming and missed items.

What Larval Tear Does in Elden Ring

Larval Tear is a key item that lets you reallocate your character’s attribute points (Vigor, Mind, Endurance, Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, Arcane) at Rennala in Raya Lucaria Academy. After defeating Rennala, she becomes a non-hostile NPC who offers “Rebirth” in exchange for one Larval Tear per use. You can respec as many times as you have Larval Tears, but you cannot drop below your starting class’s base attributes. The item is consumed on use, so choose your new build carefully.

All Larval Tear Locations in the Overworld

Most Larval Tears are found in specific, non-respawning spots across the map. Here is a complete list of the guaranteed locations, organized by region:

  • Limgrave: One in the Siofra River Well (reachable from Mistwood) – found on a corpse near the first Ancestral Woods site of grace.
  • Liurnia of the Lakes: One in Caria Manor, behind the Royal Knight Loretta boss arena (in a small courtyard). One in the Lake of Rot, near the Grand Cloister site of grace (guarded by a Kindred of Rot). One in Raya Lucaria Academy, in the church where you fight the Red Wolf of Radagon (on a corpse).
  • Caelid: One in the Swamp of Aeonia, on a corpse near the rot-ridden ruins. One in the Sellia Crystal Tunnel, in a chest behind a hidden wall.
  • Altus Plateau: One in a carriage near the Outer Wall Phantom Tree site of grace (guarded by a Troll). One in the Shaded Castle, inside the castle’s main hall.
  • Mountaintops of the Giants: One in a frozen lake area near the Freezing Lake site of grace (guarded by a Land Squirrel). One in the Consecrated Snowfield, near the Ordina, Liturgical Town entrance.
  • Miquella’s Haligtree: One in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree, near the Drainage Channel site of grace (on a corpse).

Larval Tear Locations from Bosses and NPCs

Some Larval Tears are obtained from specific enemies or NPCs, not just found on corpses:

  • Nokron, Eternal City: Two Larval Tears from the two Mimic Tear boss fights (one in Nokron, one in Nokstella).
  • Nokstella, Eternal City: One from a Silver Tear enemy that transforms into a Larval Tear when killed (near the Nokstella Waterfall Basin site of grace).
  • Deeproot Depths: One from the Fia’s Champions fight (after defeating them, loot the corpse in the arena).
  • Mohgwyn Palace: One from a corpse in the palace approach, near the Dynasty Mausoleum site of grace.
  • Volcano Manor: One from the NPC Rya (if you complete her questline) – she gives you a Larval Tear as a reward.

How to Farm Larval Tear (Respawnable Enemies)

There is one enemy that drops Larval Tear infinitely: the Silver Tear in Nokstella, Eternal City. These blob-like enemies sometimes transform into a Larval Tear when killed. The best farming spot is the area just before the boss room of the Dragonkin Soldier of Nokstella – there are several Silver Tears there. Use a weapon with high discovery (e.g., Silver Scarab talisman, Silver-Pickled Fowl Foot) to increase drop rates. However, note that the drop rate is very low, and it may take many kills to get one. The only other respawnable source is the Giant Ants in the Lake of Rot, but they drop Larval Tear extremely rarely and are not recommended for farming.

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

  • Using Larval Tear before defeating Rennala: You cannot respec until you beat Rennala and exhaust her dialogue. The item is useless until then.
  • Thinking Larval Tear is consumed on death: It is not. It is only consumed when you confirm the rebirth at Rennala.
  • Believing you can respec below base stats: You cannot. Each class has minimum attribute values that you cannot lower.
  • Missing the hidden wall in Sellia Crystal Tunnel: The chest with a Larval Tear is behind an illusory wall, so use a roll or attack to reveal it.

How to Choose Which Build to Respec Into

Before spending a Larval Tear, plan your build around a specific weapon or spell. For example, if you want to use the Moonveil Katana, you need at least 12 Strength, 18 Dexterity, and 23 Intelligence. If you are switching from a strength build to a sorcery build, allocate points to Mind (for FP) and Intelligence (for spell scaling). Check the weapon’s stat requirements and scaling (letter grades) in your inventory. Also consider your starting class – a Vagabond has higher Strength and Dexterity, while an Astrologer has higher Intelligence and Mind, so the same final stats cost different amounts of points.

Larval Tear vs. Other Respec Items

Larval Tear is the only item in the game that allows respec. There is no alternative like a “respec potion” or “memory stone” that does the same thing. Some players confuse Larval Tear with the “Rune Arc” (which activates a Great Rune) or “Tears of Denial” (a spell) – these are unrelated. If you run out of Larval Tears, you must start a New Game+ to get more, as the overworld ones do not respawn in the same playthrough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How many Larval Tears are there in Elden Ring?
There are approximately 18 Larval Tears per playthrough, including the ones from bosses and NPCs. The exact count depends on whether you complete certain questlines (like Rya’s) and whether you kill all the Mimic Tears.

Q: Can I buy Larval Tear from a merchant?
No, Larval Tears cannot be purchased from any merchant. They are only found as loot or rare drops from Silver Tears.

Q: Does the Silver Tear farm work in patch 1.10?
Yes, the Silver Tear in Nokstella still drops Larval Tear, but the drop rate is very low (around 1-2% without discovery boosts). It is not time-efficient compared to collecting the guaranteed ones.

Q: What happens if I use a Larval Tear but don’t confirm the respec?
If you exit the rebirth menu without confirming, the Larval Tear is not consumed. You can back out and keep the item.

Q: Can I respec more than once in a single playthrough?
Yes, as long as you have Larval Tears. You can respec multiple times, but each use consumes one Larval Tear.

Q: Do Larval Tears carry over to New Game+?
Yes, any unused Larval Tears in your inventory carry over to New Game+. Additionally, all the fixed locations reset, so you can collect them again.
