This article lists all six Valheim bosses in order, their summoning items, exact locations, and the rewards you get for defeating each one. You’ll also learn how to find their altars, what gear to bring, and how the boss progression works.
Boss Order and Progression
Valheim’s bosses are tied to the game’s biome progression. You must defeat them in order to unlock the next tier of gear and the next area. The intended order is:
- Eikthyr (Meadows)
- The Elder (Black Forest)
- Bonemass (Swamp)
- Moder (Mountain)
- Yagluth (Plains)
- The Queen (Mistlands)
Each boss drops a unique trophy and a power that you can equip at any sacrificial stone. The power gives a temporary buff that lasts five minutes (or 10 with the power upgraded).
Eikthyr – Meadows Boss
Location: Eikthyr’s altar is always in the Meadows biome, usually within a short walk from your spawn point. Look for a large stone circle with a deer skull on the ground.
Summoning: Place two Deer Trophies on the altar. Deer trophies drop from deer, which you can hunt with a bow or knife.
Rewards: Defeating Eikthyr drops the Eikthyr Trophy and unlocks the Eikthyr Power (increases stamina regeneration). You also get the Hard Antler, which is used to craft the Antler Pickaxe – essential for mining copper and tin.
Fighting tips: Eikthyr is weak to piercing damage (arrows). Keep your distance, strafe its lightning attacks, and use the terrain to block line of sight.
The Elder – Black Forest Boss
Location: The Elder’s altar is in the Black Forest, often near a large stone structure with a rune stone. The exact position is marked on your map after you find the rune stone that says “The Elder is summoned by burning its offspring.
Summoning: Place three Ancient Seeds on the altar. Ancient seeds drop from Greydwarf Brutes and Shamans, and are also found in burial chambers.
Rewards: The Elder drops the Elder Trophy and unlocks the Elder Power (increases wood cutting speed). It also drops the Swamp Key, which is required to open crypts in the Swamp biome – a crucial step for getting iron.
Fighting tips: The Elder is weak to fire. Use fire arrows and keep moving to avoid its root projectiles. You can also use the terrain to block its melee attacks.
Bonemass – Swamp Boss
Location: Bonemass’s altar is in the Swamp biome, usually inside a small stone structure. Look for a rune stone that says “Bonemass is summoned by offering its remains.
Summoning: Place 10 Withered Bones on the altar. Withered bones drop from Draugr, Skeletons, and are found in Sunken Crypts.
Rewards: Bonemass drops the Bonemass Trophy and unlocks the Bonemass Power (increases resistance to physical damage). It also drops the Wishbone, which helps you find buried treasure and silver veins.
Fighting tips: Bonemass is weak to blunt damage (like maces) and resistant to piercing and slash. Bring poison resistance mead, as its attacks inflict poison. Use the terrain to avoid its melee and ranged attacks.
Moder – Mountain Boss
Location: Moder’s altar is on top of a mountain peak in the Mountain biome. Look for a large stone structure with a rune stone that says “Moder is summoned by offering her eggs.
Summoning: Place three Dragon Eggs on the altar. Dragon eggs are found in nests on mountain peaks, usually guarded by drakes.
Rewards: Moder drops the Moder Trophy and unlocks the Moder Power (increases stamina regeneration while sailing). It also drops the Dragon Tear, which is used to craft the Artisan Table – essential for building the blast furnace and spinning wheel.
Fighting tips: Moder is weak to frost and resistant to fire. Use frost arrows and a bow. Keep an eye on the sky, as she will fly and land. Bring healing mead and a good shield.
Yagluth – Plains Boss
Location: Yagluth’s altar is in the Plains biome, usually in a desolate area with a large stone structure. Look for a rune stone that says “Yagluth is summoned by offering his remains.
Summoning: Place five Fuling Totems on the altar. Fuling totems drop from Fuling Berserkers and Fuling Shamans.
Rewards: Yagluth drops the Yagluth Trophy and unlocks the Yagluth Power (increases resistance to elemental damage – fire, frost, and lightning). It also drops the Yagluth’s Wish, which is used to craft the Spinning Wheel and the Blast Furnace.
Fighting tips: Yagluth is weak to frost and resistant to fire. Use frost arrows and a bow. Keep moving to avoid its meteor shower and beam attacks. Bring healing mead and a good shield.
The Queen – Mistlands Boss
Location: The Queen’s lair is deep inside an infested citadel in the Mistlands biome. You’ll need to find a sealed door with a rune stone that says “The Queen is summoned by offering her egg.
Summoning: Place one Queen’s Egg on the altar. The Queen’s egg is found in a sealed structure in the Mistlands, often guarded by Seekers.
Rewards: The Queen drops the Queen Trophy and unlocks the Queen Power (increases melee damage and reduces damage taken). It also drops the Sealbreaker, which is used to open the door to the Ashlands biome (in the game’s current state, it’s the final content).
Fighting tips: The Queen is weak to fire and resistant to frost. Use fire arrows and a bow. She has a lot of health, so bring plenty of arrows and healing. Use the pillars in the arena to block her attacks.
How to Find Boss Locations
Each boss’s location is marked on your map when you find a rune stone in the corresponding biome. These rune stones are usually at the entrance of the biome or near the boss altar. If you’re struggling to find them, you can use the Vegvisir – a small stone structure with a glowing rune – which will reveal the boss location on your map.
Alternatively, you can explore the biome thoroughly. Boss altars are usually in distinctive structures (stone circles, large rocks, etc.) and are often surrounded by enemies.
Common Mistakes and Misconceptions
- Not preparing for the boss: Each boss has a specific weakness and resistance. Bring the right weapons and arrows, and craft the appropriate mead (poison resistance for Bonemass, frost resistance for Moder, etc.).
- Underestimating the summons: Some bosses (like The Elder) have adds that spawn during the fight. Clear them quickly or they’ll overwhelm you.
- Not using the terrain: Use rocks, trees, and structures to block boss attacks, especially for Eikthyr and The Elder.
- Forgetting to upgrade your gear: Make sure your armor and weapons are at least the tier of the biome you’re in. For example, don’t fight Bonemass with bronze gear – get iron gear first.
- Misunderstanding the power system: You can only have one boss power active at a time, but you can switch between them at any sacrificial stone. The power lasts 5 minutes (10 if you’ve upgraded it with the trophy).
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I fight bosses in any order?
Technically yes, but the game is designed for a specific order. Each boss unlocks a key item or progression step (like the Swamp Key for iron) that you need to progress. Fighting a boss out of order is possible but extremely difficult and not recommended.
Q: Do I need to kill all bosses to beat the game?
Yes, currently the final boss (The Queen) is the last one, and killing her is required to access the Ashlands (which is not fully implemented yet). However, you can play indefinitely without killing all bosses.
Q: Can I summon a boss again?
Yes, you can summon any boss again by placing the required items on the altar. This is useful for farming trophies or for getting more boss powers (though you can only have one active at a time).
Q: What is the best weapon for each boss?
Eikthyr: bow (piercing). The Elder: bow with fire arrows. Bonemass: mace (blunt). Moder: bow with frost arrows. Yagluth: bow with frost arrows. The Queen: bow with fire arrows. Always bring a good melee weapon as backup.
Q: How do I get the boss power upgraded?
After defeating a boss, you can offer its trophy at any sacrificial stone to upgrade the corresponding power. The upgraded power lasts 10 minutes instead of 5 and has a slightly stronger effect.
Q: What happens if I die during a boss fight?
Your tombstone will appear where you died, and the boss will remain at its current health. You can retrieve your items and continue the fight. Be careful not to die repeatedly, as you’ll lose all your gear.
