Diablo Party Up: How to Invite Friends

Card No. 06·31451 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

This guide walks you through inviting friends to your party in Diablo IV (and the general flow that carries over from Diablo III), covering both the in-game social menu and cross-platform invites. You’ll need a Battle.net account (or the platform account for your console), and your friend’s BattleTag or platform username. Once you’re in a party, you can tackle dungeons, world bosses, and the campaign together, with shared loot and XP.

What You’ll Need

  • A copy of Diablo IV (or Diablo III) on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch.
  • An active internet connection.
  • Your friend’s BattleTag (e.g., PlayerName#1234) if they’re on PC or another platform, or their platform username (Xbox Gamertag, PlayStation Network ID, Nintendo friend code).
  • Both you and your friend must have completed the game’s prologue (the first few quests) to unlock co-op in Diablo IV. In Diablo III, co-op is available from the start.
  • Cross-play is enabled by default in Diablo IV, but check your in-game settings if you’re having trouble.

Step-by-Step

  1. Launch Diablo and log in. Start the game and enter your character. You’ll be in the world or at the main menu.
  2. Open the Social menu. On PC, press O (the letter) to open the Social wheel. On consoles, press the touchpad (PlayStation) or the View button (Xbox) to open the Social menu. On Nintendo Switch, press the minus button.
  3. Go to the “Friends tab. In the Social menu, you’ll see tabs for Friends, Clan, and Nearby Players (if any). Select “Friends.
  4. Add a friend if needed. If your friend isn’t on your list, click the “Add a Friend button (usually a plus icon or “Invite Friend button). Enter their BattleTag or platform username exactly as it appears, including the numbers after the # for BattleTags. Send the friend request. They’ll need to accept it before you can invite them to a party.
  5. Select your friend’s name. Once they’re on your friends list, highlight their name.
  6. Choose “Invite to Party. A context menu will appear with options like “Invite to Party, “Whisper, or “View Profile. Select “Invite to Party.
  7. Wait for your friend to accept. Your friend will see a notification on their screen (often a pop-up in the corner). They’ll need to press the appropriate button to accept. Once accepted, you’ll see their character appear in your party frame (usually top-left corner of the screen).
  8. Start playing together. You’ll both be in the same world. If you’re at different points in the campaign, you can still play together—the party leader’s progress is used, and other members may get a “skipped quest notification. You can teleport to each other by opening the map and clicking on your friend’s portrait.

Common Mistakes

  • Wrong BattleTag: BattleTags are case-sensitive and include a number after the #. Double-check that you typed the exact characters (e.g., DiabloFan#1234 is different from diablofan#1234).
  • Platform privacy settings: On consoles, your privacy settings might block friend requests or party invites from other platforms. Check your console’s privacy settings to allow cross-play and cross-network play.
  • Not completing the prologue: In Diablo IV, you must finish the prologue (the first questline in the Fractured Peaks) to join a party. If your friend hasn’t done that, they’ll see an error.
  • Ignoring the party frame: If you don’t see the party frame, you might have accidentally closed it. Open the Social menu and check the party tab—you can re-enable the frame in the options.
  • Inviting a friend who is already in a party: If your friend is already in a party, you can’t invite them unless they leave their current party. They’ll need to leave first.

Tips

  • Use voice chat: Diablo has built-in voice chat. When you’re in a party, you can talk to each other by pressing the push-to-talk key (default on PC is Y or V, check your settings). On consoles, voice chat is usually enabled by default.
  • Set a party leader: The party leader controls quest progression. If you want to play through the campaign together, decide who will be the leader. The leader’s progress is what counts, so if you need to catch up, let the person with the least progress lead.
  • Use the “Quick Joinâ€ feature: In the Social menu, you can also click “Quick Joinâ€ on a friend’s name to join their party directly if they have an open slot. This is faster than sending an invite.
  • Cross-play with consoles: If you’re on PC and your friend is on Xbox, you can still play together. Just add them via their BattleTag (they need to link their console account to Battle.net).
  • Check your NAT type: If you’re having connection issues, a strict NAT type can prevent party invites. Try opening your router’s ports for Diablo (or enable UPnP) to improve connectivity.

Troubleshooting

Friend doesn’t receive the invite: First, confirm you’re both online and have completed the prologue. Then, check your friend’s privacy settings—they may have disabled party invites from strangers or cross-play. Ask them to check the Social menu’s “Privacy tab. If that fails, try restarting the game and sending the invite again.

Invite fails with an error: Common errors include “Player not found (check the BattleTag spelling) or “Party is full (your party already has 4 players—the max is 4). If you get a “Cross-play disabled error, both players need to enable cross-play in the game’s options under “Social.

Can’t see your friend’s name in the friends list: They might not have accepted your friend request yet. Ask them to check their pending requests. Also, ensure you’re both on the same region (Americas, Europe, Asia). If you’re on different regions, you won’t see each other.

Party frame disappears: Press O (or the console equivalent) to open the Social menu, then go to the “Party tab. You can also press P on PC to toggle the party frame on/off.

Lag or disconnects during play: If you’re experiencing lag, check your internet connection and close any bandwidth-heavy apps. If disconnects persist, try switching to a wired connection or restarting your router.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I invite friends from different platforms? Yes, Diablo IV supports cross-play. You can invite friends on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch as long as you’re all on the same region and have cross-play enabled.

Do I need to be friends first before inviting? Yes, you need to be on each other’s friends list. You can send a friend request via the Social menu, and once accepted, you can invite them to a party.

What is the maximum party size? The maximum party size is 4 players. You can’t have more than 4 in a party.

Can I invite someone who is in a different act or chapter? Yes, but the party leader’s progress is used. If you’re on different quests, the game will warn you that some quests may be skipped for one player.

Why can’t I invite my friend who is on the same platform? If you’re on the same platform, you can still use the in-game friend list. But if you’re on console, you might also need to add them via the platform’s friend system (e.g., Xbox Live). The game should show both.

Can I invite friends to a party while I’m in a dungeon? Yes, you can send invites from anywhere, but your friend will spawn at the nearest checkpoint or town. They can teleport to you if you’re in a dungeon by opening the map and clicking your portrait.
