Google Maps Timeline: Does It Track Your Routes?

Card No. 06·24591 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Yes. Google Maps Timeline can record and display routes you traveled when Timeline is enabled and your device has the relevant location settings turned on. It is not a guaranteed or perfectly precise travel log: recording depends on your Google Account, device settings, connectivity, and Google’s current Timeline features.

What Google Maps Timeline Shows

Timeline, formerly known as Location History, is a Google Maps feature that can organize saved location information by date. In the app, you may see places you visited, the approximate times you were there, and trips between locations. Depending on the information available, it may label travel as walking, driving, cycling, or using public transport.

A route view can show a line or sequence of locations associated with a trip, but it should not be treated as a precise, continuous GPS trace. The map may connect sampled points, infer how you traveled, or omit parts of a journey. For example, Timeline might show that you went from home to a station and later to a shop without preserving every turn you took between them.

Timeline is useful for recalling a day, checking where you stopped, or reviewing a journey. It is not the same as live location sharing, turn-by-turn navigation history, or a guaranteed record suitable for proving exactly where you were.

How Route Recording Works

Timeline is based on location information associated with your Google Account. Location can be estimated using signals such as GPS, nearby Wi-Fi networks, mobile networks, and device sensors. GPS can be less reliable indoors, underground, between tall buildings, or where the phone has a limited view of the sky. A phone may also conserve power by gathering location less frequently.

For routes to appear, the relevant Timeline or Location History setting must be enabled for the account or device, and the phone must be able to provide location information. The exact controls and storage behavior can vary by device, account, and current Google Maps version. Google has been changing Timeline storage, including moving much Timeline data toward storage on the device, so older instructions about account-wide web access may not match what you see now.

Several things can make a record incomplete:

  • Timeline was off, paused, or not enabled for the account in use.
  • Google Maps did not have the necessary location permission, or device location was switched off.
  • The phone was powered down, out of battery, or unable to obtain reliable location signals.
  • Battery restrictions, background-app limits, or network conditions interrupted updates.
  • You used another phone or account, and Timeline was configured differently there.

How to Check a Day or Route

Open Google Maps on the phone associated with the account that recorded the trip. Tap your profile picture or initial, then look for Your Timeline. The wording or placement can change as the app is updated. In Timeline, select a date using the calendar controls and review the day’s map and activity details. If a route or visit is shown, tap it for any additional information available.

If you do not see a trip, first confirm that you are signed into the expected Google Account. Then check the Timeline settings and the phone’s location permissions. On Android, location permissions are managed in the phone’s app settings; on iPhone, they are managed under the iOS privacy and location controls. Menu labels can differ between operating-system versions, so look for Google Maps and its Location permission rather than relying on an exact path from an older guide.

Google Maps may offer a way to edit or correct a Timeline entry, such as changing a place or travel mode. Edits can improve the displayed record, but they do not establish that the corrected route is an exact GPS measurement. Avoid changing entries if you need to preserve an unaltered record for your own documentation.

Timeline Settings, Editing, and Deletion

To review whether recording is active, open Google Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, and open Your Timeline or its settings. Check the controls for Timeline or Location History and the account shown. Google’s labels and available options may differ as the feature evolves; follow the controls displayed in your app and Google Account.

You can generally manage saved Timeline information, including deleting selected days or a broader date range, and some configurations offer automatic deletion after a chosen period. Deleting data can be difficult or impossible to undo, so review the date range and account before confirming. If Timeline data is stored on a device, changing phones, reinstalling an app, or losing the device may affect access to that data; check Google’s current transfer and backup options before making a change.

Turning Timeline off stops future Timeline recording for the relevant setting, but it is not necessarily the same as deleting information already saved. If you want to remove past data, use the deletion controls separately and check whether other location-related settings or records apply.

Accuracy and Privacy

Timeline’s accuracy varies by place and conditions. In an open area, a phone may obtain a useful GPS position; inside a large building, a tunnel, or a dense city, location estimates can be less exact. A short stop may be missed, a visit may be assigned to a nearby business, or a trip’s travel mode may be guessed incorrectly. Treat the map as an approximate personal history, not a survey-grade route or an authoritative attendance record.

Because Timeline can reveal sensitive routines and places, consider who can access your unlocked phone and Google Account. Use a strong account password and available sign-in protections, keep the device secured, and review sharing and location settings. Do not assume that turning off Timeline disables every other Google location feature; check the separate controls described in your account and Maps app.

Common Problems and Alternatives

If Timeline is empty or has gaps, check the account, date, Timeline status, and device location permission first. Also make sure you are looking on the phone or in the app where the data is currently available. If settings look correct, update Google Maps, restart the phone, and check again after the device has had time to obtain location. These steps cannot recreate travel data that was never recorded.

If you need a route recorded intentionally, a navigation app’s trip history or a dedicated GPS recording app may be more appropriate, provided you understand its permissions and storage practices. A calendar, travel diary, or saved places can also help reconstruct trips without continuously recording location. None of these alternatives should be assumed to provide a complete record unless recording was active and functioning during the journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Google Maps show the exact route I drove?
It can show an approximate route or sequence of locations when Timeline has recorded enough information. It does not guarantee a precise trace of every road, turn, or stop.

Does Google Maps Timeline work if the app is closed?
It may record in the background if the required account and device settings allow it. Background location permission, battery limits, and operating-system behavior can affect recording.

Can I see my Timeline on a computer?
Access options have changed as Google has revised Timeline storage. Check the current Google Maps app and Google’s account controls; older instructions for viewing all history on the web may no longer apply to your setup.

Why is my Google Maps Timeline missing a trip?
Common causes include Timeline being off, the wrong account or device, location permission restrictions, weak location signals, or the phone being unavailable during the trip.

Does turning off Timeline erase past routes?
Turning it off generally controls future recording; it is separate from deleting saved data. Use Timeline’s deletion controls if you want to remove past entries, and confirm the date range before proceeding.
